A welcome retreat in a very peaceful setting with a great host
Steve was a welcoming and very friendly, helpful host. The house was fully equipped and it’s setting was perfect for a tranquil restful holiday.
There was easy access to visit Châteaus and riverside walks. As we went just out of season, not all amenities were open. However, this suited us as we were looking for a peaceful retreat!
As dog lovers, Steve was very happy to accommodate our 4 dogs! The enclosed safe and beautiful garden was perfect to relax in and for al fresco dinners, just wonderful.
We don’t usually look to stay in the same place twice, as we like to explore all areas of France, but in this instance we are definitely going back!
One week in July
The property was in a great location for our break, close to some lovely towns and in a good place to explore some of the wonderful Chateau of the Cher and Loire.
The house itself was clean and satisfactory for our needs, with all the equipment you could need. Steve was an excellent host and looked after us well. We enjoyed our first evening when he kindly shared a bottle or two with us.
Our one observation would be that it is now sadly looking tired, particularly the garden and garden furniture which was a disappointment.
With a little more TLC it would have been lovely.
I agree the old garden furniture has seen better days and I will replace it as a priority thanks for pointing it out
Great weather loved the garden the house and the area. Lots of places to visit the castles the zoo and the towns.
Family Friendly Cottage for Exploration of the Loire Valley
Our family of six (two adults and four children ages 7, 9, 13, and 16) enjoyed a four night stay in this lovely 19th centuray cottage in Verennes-sur-Fouzon. It was ideally located for exploration from a welcoming home base. Just as described, the cozy and clean cottage, with two bedrooms, a lounge room, and a large comfortable kitchen with everything one might need to prepare and serve a meal, was situated in a gorgeous enclosed garden in the heart of the Loire. We dined outside on several occasions and the children enjoyed passing the football to and fro every evening. We also enjoyed watching the Euro 2016 on the television with English commentary! A large supermarket was only minutes up the road in the town of Chabris.
Steve, the very gracious host, warmly welcomed us on the first night with a bottle of wine from the region and great advice on sights to see in the area. It was easy to drive to Amboise, Blois, Chenonceaux, and environs to explore castles and towns. Our family's favorite sights were the Clos Lucé and the Château de Chenonceau. We also enjoyed the Zoo-Parc de Beauval and canoeing on the Cher (canoe-company.fr). Steve is an excellent host and we would recommend this property to anyone wishing to have a relaxing home away from home from which to explore the area by car. Thank you, Steve, for making our stay so memorable - we hope to see you again!
Adam and his family are the perfect guests, the children very polite and respectful
They really embraced the French life here visiting the Chateaux cooking great food (which I was lucky to be invited to) and relaxing. I hope they return to Maison des Reves
A great place to stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage, it was very clean, well maintained and well equipped. The garden was as ,described, well kept and secure, all in all a true home from home. The property is set in a delightful and quiet village with a well stocked supermarket only a few minutes down the road. Unfortunately the baker in the village had recently closed down, but it is hoped that it will open again in the near future, however this did not cause us any problems. There is a very friendly bar in the village that is open all day closing early evening, local cuisine is available there at lunch time.
Steve, the owner and his wife (who was away when we were there) live next door and he made us very welcome and was always extremely helpful and friendly, very knowledgeable about the village and surrounding area and where to visit - including the best vineyards. He really helped to make our holiday complete.
We would thoroughly recommend the property for a quiet and restful holiday for walking and exploring the surrounding area.
Thank you Steve.
From the gates you can easily stroll to the local bar/restaurant, the Post Office, butchers'
There are many quiet footpaths for strolling along, taking in the clean unpolluted air.
A five minute drive will bring you to the busy little town Chabris which has a large supermarket and fuel station. It also has a variety of shops including restaurants, hair dressers, newsagents and a bank. If you want to cool off in the water there is a swimming pool and a riverside beach here and canoes can be hired for river trips.
For the more energetic there are tennis courts and equestrian activities. An excellent typical French market town is Selles sur Cher which is easily reached by a pleasant car journey of about 15 minutes. Market day is Thursday. There are a couple of pavement bars where you can take a drink, rest for a while and absorb the atmosphere, as well as restaurants and a variety of shops, a small chateau and an impressive church.

About Chris Lawrence
We fell in love with Maison des Reves during a summer holiday in 2002 even though it was in a very sad state. We then spent the next 10 years slowly renovating it back to its original condition but there will always be more we can do. We also renovated the small cottage in the same grounds. Having taken early retirement the cottage is our home while the main house is for friends family and of course guests who want to enjoy staying here
Chris Lawrence purchased this House in 2002
Why Chris Lawrence chose Val-Fouzon
Maison des Reves is ideal break for anyone who wants to get away from the stress of working life and really relax. Life goes at a very slow pace and you will enjoy peaceful days eating fresh food and drinking excellent local wines and visting the historic Chateaux villages and towns scattered along the Loire
What makes this House unique
The house is on one level (all but a small step in the hallway) so is ideal for anyone who has trouble climbing stairs. The house is well situated for days out to the famous Chateaux Chambord Chenenseau and Valencay is only 10 minutes drive. You will also be in excellent wine country were you can visit the vieyards taste and buy red white and sparkling wines at very good prices. There are many excellent restaurants that serve traditional French cuisine made from fresh local produce. The village of Varennes also has a rail station for the local Hertitage railway the only narrow gauge railway left in France. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemin_de_Fer_du_Blanc-Argent
