About the property

3 bedroom, 2 bath villa with sweeping views of the Caribbean

Welcome to Bay Breeze Bungalow – a truly secluded beachfront island getaway! Our villa is located on Roatan’s north shore in the private, gated community of Palmetto Bay. The on-site bar & restaurant add convenience after long leisurely days in the sun. We think it’s perfect because it’s off the beaten path - away from the crowds of West End, West Bay & the cruise ship traffic.

Bay Breeze Bungalow offers 3 bedrooms (1 king, 1 queen, 2 twins) & 2 full baths, screened in dining for 6 & open style, wrap-around decks to bring the outdoors in, fully-equipped kitchen, living area with seating arranged to take in the views, game table, television, full-house water purification system, wifi, washer/dryer – everything you’ll need to relax and get away.

Wake each morning in your open air, Bali-style villa looking out at the warm turquoise waters of the Caribbean. Relax on your deck, curled up with a book in one of the comfy deck chairs or hammock, enjoying the gentle ocean breeze. Dive or snorkel the world’s 2nd largest barrier reef. Venture out for some exciting deep-sea fishing & cook up your catch in your newly-renovated, fully-equipped kitchen. Serve up your meals on the screened-in deck, taking in that amazing view! Don’t feel like cooking? The Palmetto Bay bar & restaurant are just steps away, serving up refreshing tropical drinks and perfectly prepared island dishes. Fall asleep to the sounds of the Caribbean waters right outside your bedroom.

Lisa & Peter Kitchen will be your hosts during your stay. They are full-time residents in Palmetto Bay and available whenever and for whatever you may need. They'll be friendly faces awaiting you at the airport, a phone call away throughout your stay &

onsite to help make your vacation relaxing & worry-free.

If you want to explore the island, it’s best to rent a car and it’s nice to have one when you need to restock from the grocery store or the local veg/fruit stand.

After purchasing this home in March, we’ve given it a full makeover. The renovations are are complete and we are so pleased! We hope you enjoy Bay Breeze as much as we do!

About Char & Gordon Mayer

We're Gordon & Char Mayer. Our stateside home is in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge in southern Washington where we own & operate Mya-Moe Ukuleles. We hand-build 200+ instruments each year and they are played by musicians you've probably heard of, like Eddie Vedder, Dave Matthews and the members of Mumford & Sons.

Char & Gordon Mayer purchased this bungalow in 2015

Why Char & Gordon Mayer chose Roatan

When we first saw Palmetto Bay, we fell in love with the Balinese architecture, the plush tropical vegetation, the long sandy beaches, pristine waters and the on-site pool. We *knew* we wanted to own in this community and when this villa came on the market, we jumped at the chance to own it. It is the closest to the water and offers views unobstructed by any other houses. For us, this is not a rental property. It is our home that we share when we can't use it.

What makes this bungalow unique

We have put ourselves into this home by remodeling it - from the totally new, tiled master bathroom to the cool palm-leaf ceiling fans to the fully outfitted kitchen to the screened in dining room on the west deck. We hope you find it comfortable and inviting and that you think of us with kind regards while you're sipping a cocktail looking out over the Caribbean.

I want to move to Roatan!

  • 5 of 5

Despite several days of rain, this is paradise. In posting pictures to facebook, I commented that I want to move to Roatan! This house is beautiful. It is right on the beach with rain forest all around. Everything you might need during your stay have been provided by the owners, Char and Gordon. It is obvious that this is not just another rental but their home! In the morning you wake to the sound of the ocean just outside your windows. Breakfast on the porches is wonderful with hummingbirds, herons, egrets and other birds in the trees and water in view. Once you start moving, you can walk for miles along the beach, often without encountering another person. The waters are a nursery for the young fish that populate the reefs surrounding Roatan. I saw something new on each walk from starfish to living shells to schools of small fish. Magical! If you dive or snorkel, you can be picked up right from the dock. My husband and daughter said both the diving and snorkeling were wonderful. If you plan to leave Palmetto Bay, you will definitely need to rent a 4 wheel drive SUV. The roads are part of the adventure as Roatan has only one paved main road. Half of the road at the top of the mountain to Palmetto Bay has washed out! We went zip lining from the top of Roatan. We visited the sloth farm(which is an animal rescue) and held their pregnant sloth, an awesome experience. AND my favorite was the dolphin encounter at Anthony Key where you can swim and snorkel with their dolphins at RIMS (Roatan Institute of Marine Science). I have always wanted to do this but this is the only place I have found that treated the dolphins humanely. Well worth the cost, which by the way goes to support RIMS. Nearby is Carabola Gardens which is a beautiful spot to hike to the top of the mountain and see both sides of the island. If you want more touristy things you can go to West Bay for their beautiful beach, but expect to encounter crowds of people from the cruise ships. Also West End is great for souvenir shopping. Try Waves or Rusty Nail for items made on Roatan.

The staff at Palmetto Bay are very helpful in planning excursions or a massage at the bungalow. We had massages on the porch at sunset with gentle rain on the tin roof. Fabulous!

So, if you want to get away from the crowds but still be in luxurious surroundings, this is the place for you!

A real treasure on the island!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Palmetto Bay with our daughter and her friend and had a fab time. The pictures accurate the place is just as darling as it looks. AC & fans, laundry, full kitchen, filtered water throughout the house, stocked games cabinet, snorkel equip for guests, even extra bug & sun spray,. This is a fully appointed home and we were so happy to settle in for our stay. Couple things for next visitors-- we rented 4wheel drive car and it was essential. There are rough (dirt & steep grades) roads to get here. We were not afraid of the adventure but some people may be deterred. Also good to know is there is a SECOND way to get here not listed on the website. The road from West End (passing by Anthony Key) and then by the island dumpsite is more indirect but easier driving ask Lisa for details. Other things to note- the house is positioned with great ocean view out the front porch, but there is a run-off drainage channel in along the side so we had quite a lot of mozzie action. Everyone needs to be vigilant about bug spray! The house is fully screened so not really a problem once inside, but getting from car to house can be trouble. Overall we loved the relaxing stay, went out with Henry on a snorkel, ate twice at the restaurant, enjoyed the sound of rain on the roof, totally relaxed. For best snorkeling we did head out to West Bay. My husband got certified scuba with West Bay Divers (recommend highly!!) and I went with them for snorkeling 3x. Loved our visit and thanks for sharing your home with us! A real treasure on the island!!

Beautiful Bungalow

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 18 year old daughter, and I had a wonderful week at Bay Breeze Bungalow! The home is beautiful and the location within Palmetto Bay is perfect. It is close to the water and close to the bar/restaurant which we frequented daily. This is a great location if you want to be away from it all. We ventured out most days to do some type of activity. It takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the main paved road from Palmetto Bay so you'll want to keep that in mind. It is a rather bumpy ride but we just rented a sedan and were fine. We were surprised at how early the sun sets in Roatan, so we didn't venture out much for dinners. We had really delicious meals at the restaurant on site. One night, there was live music and we met many friendly owners of other villas within Palmetto Bay. Some of the activities that the staff helped us arrange were: ziplining with Pirates of the Caribbean (super fun!!), dolphin encounter and snorkel at Anthony's Key, massages at the house, and snorkeling trip with Henry (he knows exactly where to take you...saw tons of starfish and other fish). We went to West End and West Bay one day. West Bay is great because we swam right our to the reef to snorkel. Be ready to be hounded by all of the businesses trying to take you snorkeling, fishing, etc. We just kept walking west and found a spot to hang out for a while and swim/snorkel. We are not divers, but if we were, I'm sure we would have appreciated West End more. We did have a really good early dinner there one evening at Creoles's Chicken. If we return to Roatan we would definitely stay here again! Thanks Char and Gordon for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Private beach escape

  • 5 of 5

If you are trying to escape the hustle and bustle, then this is the place. We came across only a handful of people at the property the entire week. We walked the beach for an hour each direction and crossed paths with a couple of friendly locals, but otherwise had it all to ourselves.

The property/resort has a nice pool and restaurant which is quite good, so you're not completely isolated. The staff are very accommodating and helpful also, arranging excursions or giving recommendations for places to explore.

If you want a bit more action, West End and West Bay (touristy areas) are a quick 20-30 minute drive. Alternatively, the East end of the island is also easily accessible as the property is perfectly located centrally.

The bungalow itself is incredible. I don't believe I've been to a more serene and peaceful location in my life. The bedrooms, kitchen and living areas are very nicely decorated and comfortable. There is plenty of room to sprawl out, although it was just my wife and I this time, we are considering a return trip with another couple and this place would be perfect. We cooked several of our own meals (fresh fish and lobster from local fishermen) as the kitchen is stocked with everything you need. You will need to hit the local market, Eldon's, for spices, butter, etc, but it is the nicest market in the Caribbean I've come across.

The drive to/from the property is best suited for a truck or SUV. It's not far, but a slow, rocky ride. We are the adventurous type and rented the smallest econo box on the island and still made it around perfectly well, so it is possible.

There are very few places we would consider for a return trip, and this is definitely one of them.

An amazing family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We loved sitting on the porch, feeling the sea breeze and watching the trees and beautiful colors of the sea. Our stay at this beautiful home was so calming and tranquil. The crew at Palmetto was so welcoming and attentive and made us feel right at home. We are so happy with our decision to stay here and hope to return someday. Thank you!

AMAZING!

  • 5 of 5

This little piece of paradise was everything we hoped it would be and more! It was far removed from the hustle and bustle of the cruise ship traffic and tourist crowds but close enough to drive in to experience island cuisine and tours. Waking up to the sound of the waves on the beach and the birds was so relaxing and being able to enjoy a cup of Honduran coffee on the screened in porch can't be beat. Relaxing in the hammocks on the porch while reading a book or napping after a swim in the ocean only made this little piece of paradise even more inviting. I can see how easy it would be to live on island time permanently! The staff and hosts were all very sweet and helpful when needed, which was rarely, because Char and Gordon have thought of everything possible to make this bungalow perfect for a hospitable, relaxing stay. We definitely hope to come back again soon!
