About this property

Spacious private villa in lush tropical gardens, 2 mins stroll to sea and pool.

Mangoes has had recent refurbishments and is now a two bedroom, two bathroom house with one of the bathrooms en-suite to the master bedroom..
This lovely detached villa, in lush tropical gardens is available for parties up to 5 in number. Couples are particularly welcome - we find it glorious to have this space for the two of us!
It goes without saying that the whole house and grounds are exclusively for your party; only the entrance gate is shared.
Mangoes could not be better located; it’s just across the road from a sandy beach and the pool.

Sunset Crest, where Mangoes is situated is a lovely residential area right on the 'Platinum Coast' of Barbados and near the two historic streets of Holetown. Most of the houses are quite large, detached properties (owned by respectable working people) with beautiful, tropical gardens which all add to the pleasant atmosphere of the area.
The beach and the pool are situated just across the road. The pool is privately owned by Sunset Crest property owners and is served by the Beach House which provides restaurant, bar and facilities. Entry to the pool is free for local residents and renters and, as many locals are working people with lives to attend to and not much time to go swimming, this leaves it fairly under-used.

Back to Mangoes ……
The house is large with three areas for dining; formally in our 'al fresco' dining room, quietly in the gazebo tucked away in the rear garden (which I call the secret garden) or on the big veranda; probably the most popular and most used area of the house.

There are five bed spaces in two generous bedrooms; the master is a twin/super-king (with the safe in the wardrobe) - now en suite, the second has three single beds, or a large double and a single if preferred with a private bathroom a few steps along the corridor.
All the bedrooms have ample wardrobe space, dressing table and seat, hairdryer, full length mirror, bedside table and lamps. All are equipped with ceiling fans and air conditioning at no extra cost.

The fresh, modern bathrooms, all have generously sized showers, washbasin and loo.

The kitchen has been recently refitted with plenty of fresh, new cupboards with white doors and granite work surfaces. It is well equipped with tropical fridge/freezer, cooking stove/hob, kettle, coffee maker, toaster, pans, crockery, cutlery etc.
Off the kitchen we have a recently renewed washroom with washing facilities for your use.

The living room is light and airy with windows/french doors on three sides. Keep the breeze flowing though even whilst out by locking the clever wrought iron gates, provided to protect the house and your property.
This room is furnished with a three/two/one cane suite in tropical style, coffee table, flat-screen multi channel TV, video and DVD player and well stocked bookshelves.
Two bright, 'Hunter' lights (with fan) hang from the ceiling and an occasional table in the corner bears a lamp, the telephone and our guest book!
There are three sets of glass 'French' doors leading from the living room; two to the verandah and one to the formal dining room.

The dining room is furnished with a large white-wood table and six upholstered chairs. Its lovely arched windows look out onto the garden on three sides.

The veranda overlooks the main garden and is well furnished with a modern selection of furniture in attractive earth colours. This comprises a two seater couch, two arm chairs, dining table with six padded dining chairs and the famous Mamasan relaxer - much loved by everyone! In all, this amounts to comfortable seating for 11 people! There is also a coffee table, fans and good lighting including an extra standard lamp.
This is a wonderful place to sit in the evening, overlooking the garden with its lovely arch (and fairy lights), relaxing and listening to the happy sound of the tree frogs chirping away!

Decor is up to date and lighting around the property has been carefully considered to promote a soft, relaxing atmosphere when desired whilst also offering enough light to enjoy reading.

A previous guest wrote to us after his holiday, saying that on his first evening, when he sat on the verandah, overlooking the garden, he thought he had died and gone to heaven! He had been looking out at our floral arch, lit with pretty fairy-lights at night.
Tropical vegetation is exotic and we have a range of interesting, useful and beautiful plants all around the house. We have bougainvillea, hibiscus, frangipani, lemon grass, aloe vera, alamander, desert rose, bird of paradise and more. The arch itself is adorned with a dainty climber bearing pretty, feathery leaves and delicate pink bells.

INCLUDED SERVICES
There are ceiling fans in the living room, kitchen and bedrooms which also offer air-conditioning. (No extra charge for this.)
There is maid service twice per week. This involves changing of bed linen, cleaning of bathrooms and mopping floors etc.
The telephone makes free calls around the island. It will not call to numbers abroad but calls from abroad can be received.
Free Wifi.
The safe - big enough for everyone's property.

There are NO extra fees and charges for staying at Mangoes. Please ask for clarification if you are unsure.

NB. In July 2018, Barbados Revenue Authority started charging a “room rate levy” to all visitors to the island. It is my job to collect this fee and to deliver it to the correct department. The fee is 3.75% of the full rental cost.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

Fabulous vaction

We stayed here for 10 days and the location is great - close to the beach, restaurants, and grocery store. The house is well maintained, with a cleaning service that came twice during our stay. All communication with the owners was friendly and helpful.

Mangos, Perfect location to the perfect beach.

7 people enjoyed this wonderful house just a minute walk across the street to the best little beach. The reef is perfect for snorkeling and the sand is clean white and soft. We explored all the good beaches on Barbados and really, this is the best one. The house is very nice and included everything needed to cook and relax in a clean modern environment. Everything works including the wifi. The owner is very nice and will keep in touch to made sure you are comfortable and happy. We had such a good time at Mangos the house and truly recommend to anyone coming to Barbados.

Good location and potential

Been in Barbados few times. Extended bungalow with separate attached apartment in an excellent location with beach, pool club, restaurants, supermarket and bus stops all within 10 minutes. Nice garden and veranda at the front but sadly mosquitos agreed. From early evening to morning nothing stops the mosquitos biting. We tried everything including Deet. Fortunately we missed the Dengue outbreak in the area. Bedrooms are large and comfy beds but A/C limited to 23*C. Bathrooms are fine but those not en-suite are a bit hot. The cooling in the public areas is totally inadequate (not helped by one ceiling fan not working). As the doors had to be closed against mosquitos at night the temperature was unbearable at times. The fridge in the kitchen couldn't keep the milk from going off. The patio furniture in the sitting room was uncomfortable if sitting for a long time. Smart TV but locked for additional app downloads (has Netflix and Prime). Cleaning service once in 12 night night stay but OK. Path to back gate (quickest access to facilities) uneven but passable with care. Bars on windows caused a bit of unease for a couple of bedrooms' fire escape routes. Overall a holiday home with great potential and the problems listed are easily resolved.

Comfortable villa in a perfect location

Mangoes is not a high end, cutting-edge property. It is comfortable villa that feels like home after a couple of days and we loved it! The location is superb with the pool and beach 2 minutes from the back gate and countless bars and restaurants within10 minutes walk. We stayed with family and the accommodations were perfect for a total of 6 people. Katasha kept the place pristine (many thanks) and the communication with owner Cath could not have been better. The information provided is very comprehensive. Some have had a problem with mosquitoes which are around it is true, but by being sensible with precautions we had no problems. Overall we couldn’t have chosen a better property in Holetown.

Local villa with a lovely garden

Sunset Crest is a perfectly portioned villa with a cosy bajan feel. You can walk everywhere from the house and there is a great coffee and breakfast place just out the back gate. This part of the island has lots of mosquitoes compared to other parts which meant we did get bitten a lot but other than that we had a great time.

Beautiful and Serene

First let me say that Cath, the owner, was a pleasure to work with once we rented this property. Cath was detailed and attentive to all questions via email and what's app text. The property is exactly as advertised. Beautiful and peaceful grounds and comfortable and spacious house. Paula and Cheryl were thorough in accommodating us. The neighborhood is very upscale with many wonderful places to eat and shop. Beautiful beach sunsets just steps away and a well kept pool for our use. I've recommended this property personally to friends and family who may make the trip to Barbados soon. I had the best birthday ever!

I rented a property in St. James Barbados through Home away from home. I have no regrets. Excellent

My husband and I, together with my two brothers and their wives, stayed at a property call Mangoes. It was awesome. It was a three bedroom, three bath villa which was very clean and spacious. The care- taker, Lucille was very friendly and kept the place very clean. She came twice a week and clean the entire villa. She changed the beds, put fresh towels in the bathrooms and fresh kitchen towel . The Villa location is awesome. Only two minutes walk from the beach and pool. The yard is very large with beautiful flowers. Every day two monkeys come to the windows to say hi to us. It was only a 5 minutes walk to the supermarket called Massey, and to the restaurants and shopping mall. The buses were also a two minutes walk and came frequently. We can't wait to go there again. Everything was just perfect. We love everything about that place. The owner was also very helpful. She kept in touch with me and answer all my questions. She was perfect in all her informations and guidance pertaining to the property and neighborhood. Thanks Cath. You're the best.

A wonderful vacation - our 2nd time back !

This is our second time back to this property. Our stay was hassle free and relaxed. The property is clean and well kept. It is airy, spacious with a beautiful lush garden a few minutes walk from the beach in a safe area. Since we have young kids we were very happy about the grocery store and a walk-in clinic near-by. The area has good restaurants and is minutes from the famous Limegrove shopping mall. We will definitely be back!

Perfect location

We have been to Holetown in Barbados 5 times now and this has to be the absolute best location for this price range. You are right in the middle of it all yet it’s so quiet and peaceful. The villa is big, clean and fully stocked. We loved eating in the outdoor dining area which had mesh to stop the mosquito coming in, yet still felt like outdoor dining. To have use of the beach house pool is excellent especially for the price of renting the villa. We’ve had access to the beach house in the past and this was another thing that made us choose Mangoes above any other villa. We plan to venture to other parts of the world for a few years but wouldn’t hesitate to rebook at Mangoes should we return to barbados.

Perfect accommodations in a perfect location

Just returned from a relaxing 2 week stay at Mangoes in Sunset Crest. The accommodations were perfect and exactly as described and pictured---clean, spacious, warm and inviting, with everything you could possibly want or need. Thoroughly enjoyed breakfast and afternoon cocktails on the front porch with the geckos, finches, doves and occasional curious monkey (they don't bother you, and quickly go on their way). Mangoes is well situated in a perfect location, particularly if you don't want to be bothered with a car. A short (< 5-minute) walk out the back gate gets you to food, shopping, a bus stop, the beach club (w/ pool), and the beach! A 5-minute walk will get you to a major, modern supermarket with everything you could possible want or need. The beach adjacent to the club/pool is small but quiet and good for swimming, with a bit of shade too. You won't be bothered much, if at all, by vendors here. But bring your own chairs if you want a seat. (There are plenty of lounge chairs by the pool---provided you get there early---but these are for the pool area only.) However, we spent much of our beach time a few blocks down the road, directly across from the supermarket at the beach adjacent to Surfside Restaurant and Bar, our "second home" during our stay. Great beach, surprisingly good off beach snorkeling, and excellent drinks and food in a laid back, quintessential Caribbean atmosphere. Lounge chairs and umbrellas can be rented here at a reasonable price, and there's alway someone available if you want to partake in water sports, purchase colorful clothing, or get your hair braided ;-). We became quite friendly with some of the folks working the beach. Lovely, lovely people. They felt like family by the time we left. I could go on and on, but suffice to say that Mangoes can't be beat for the combination of accommodations and location---again, particularly if you don't want to have to drive. Highly recommended. P.S. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners---Cath and Ian---when we arrived, as they stayed prior to us. Delightful folks, and the pride and care they take in their home really shows.

Great Location, very clean and comfortable

Just coming to the end of our holiday. My husband and I and our children really enjoyed the stay. The house is very clean and has great access to the beach and eateries. The kitchen is well stocked and the rooms are large and airy, we never had to use the air conditioning. We don’t want to leave. The owner is always on hand if needed and answers all questions quickly with a happy pleasant manner. I would highly recommend this house it’s staff and the owners, just pleasant through and through.

Amazing get-away!!

Our family had an amazing stay at Mangoes Villa. The island has so much to offer and from Mangoes Villa you are close to all of it! Literally just a 2 minute walk to the pool and sandy beach. 5 minutes will put you at the modern and well stocked grocery store, a handful of restaurants, beach bars, medical clinic, and other stores for shopping. The villa itself is well stocked and VERY comfortable with all the modern amenities. The bedrooms are quite large and all three of them have air conditioning and ceiling fans. The yard and building are very well cared for and the gardens around the house are lush and tropical just as the listing states! We saw lizards, frogs, monkeys, and a variety of birds every day. The highlight of our vacation though was swimming with the sea turtles which we did on four separate occasions and were not disappointed as we saw turtles close up every single time, and best of all, it was just a very short, easy swim from shore. I would highly recommend Mangoes Villa to everyone, and Cath was a gracious host, patient with all of our first-time visitor questions.

Lovely villa with a lush garden & well located

We were very happy with our stay at Mangoes. The property listing was accurate and the rooms comfortable, clean and well-maintained. The owner & property manager provided excellent customer service. We would definitely recommend it to our friends / relatives. We were extremely happy with the villa's location. It was private and at the same time well-located i.e. close to a medical center, grocery store, Limegrove lifestyle centre ( a stylish shop & dine ), beaches, bars and restaurants.

Really excellent accommodation in Holetown

Mangoes is probably better than the listed description and Cathy & Ian have recently upgraded the accommodation so it now includes an additional ensuite bathroom for bedroom no. 2 and a large modern laundry room . It’s light , bright and airy and Lucille the housekeeper maintains everything to a very high standard . It’s hard to find fault really ! Cathy prides herself in providing everything you need for a wonderful holiday and is on hand ( by phone or email ) should you experience any problems . The added bonus is that the rear garden door gives access onto the Chattel Village green which is no more than 200 metres from the beach and the Beach House which is a separate facility owned by the residents of Sunset Crest and offers a large pool with sun loungers . There is also a bar and very good restaurant. Cafe Carizma in the chattel Village is excellent as is Zacchios and Surfside for all the sports . All are no more than a short walk away. Lime Grove provides high end shopping and the cinema is quite an experience ( not to be missed ). So Mangoes is easy to recommend but get in soon because we have it booked ( Jan/Feb until 2020 !! ) Howard & Sarah Jones

About the host

Host profile image
Hi there,
We are Cath and Ian Mills (Most of the writing on this site is mine - Cath's. That's us above, at a lovely restaurant a bit North of Mangoes - The Fish Pot)

We love our own holidays and know how important it is to re-charge those batteries once in a while so we do our best to ensure that all of our guests have a wonderful holiday experience.
We come out to Mangoes twice per year to make sure everything's ok or to make improvements and ..... to enjoy!

You want to know more about us?
Well, we've both worked with people for many years. Before we started running our own businesses, I used to work in child care whilst Ian was in charge of the local Careers department.
Next we had three, very hands on, businesses of our own and eventually "retired" (haha) in 2021. You hear many retired people, including us, say they have never been busier!
We were married on April Fool's day (which tips you off as to our sense of humour!) and recently celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary in this year of 2023.

Why they chose this property

We've been travelling to Barbados for around 35 years and have forgotten how many times we've visited.
Way back in the past, I had a 'thing' about Barbados. I think it started when Cadburys chocolate people came to school with a film of 'How we make chocolate' and those little penny bars to give out, one each. I was about 7/8 and very impressionable. The film started with sugar cane cutting in Barbados .... the sky was so blue, the vegetation so lush .....
When I was around 20, there was a documentary about the island showing as the 'second film' at the cinema. There it was again, that intense blue, the emerald greenery, the vibrant colours of the flowers .... how could I resist? I was sunk!!!
When a certain airline (who I suppose must remain nameless) brought the flights down to a realistic price, our whole family took advantage. At first we stayed on the South Coast, which is lovely, but when we found the Sunset Crest/Holetown area, I felt I'd come home.
This genteel area has more gentle seas, the underwater national park (so the snorkeling is great) and it has great facilities - everything's on the doorstep. I always tell guests that they don't need a car here except for sightseeing purposes.
The area has seen some sympathetic re-development in recent years, with pleasing results. The facilities are right up to date for the 21st century whilst all the character and charm of the Caribbean has been preserved, notably the chattel village - a cute collection of brightly painted wooden shanties selling a wide range of goods. By contrast, we have Lime Grove, a smart, semi open-plan shopping mall selling all the top designer labels. It offers several restaurants and a cinema too.
We saw Mangoes in Spring of 2003 and I fell in love instantly. In my eyes it was the perfect house in the perfect place. It did need a lot of TLC, but after quite a bit of updating, it's now a home we are proud to share and we have every confidence that our guests will love it too.

What makes this property unique

I knew I wanted to buy a big house (big enough for all the family) in Sunset crest/Holetown area - it's such a nice, peaceful tree-lined, up-market place.
It took a lot of planning and hard work to acquire Mangoes - I prepared my personal projection based on our finances eight years in advance of the year we bought and I'm so glad it all came right! We saw Mangoes in Spring of 2003 and I fell in love instantly.
What made me do that? Well .....
The proximity to the beach could only be better if the situation were beach-front..... we are just across the road; a two minute walk at most! We just grab a towel, take the tiny key for the wrought iron doors, leave the breeze streaming through and cross the road for a swim in the warm Caribbean. If a storm has whipped up the waves a bit too much, we use the pool which is also just across the road.
I like to swim in the late afternoon and to watch the sky changing from blue, through pink and gold to a velvety violet as evening begins. After swimming, we often have a drink at the beach bar and watch the sun setting over the sea.
The other thing that smote me instantly were the gardens which were a dream. I was entranced by the gazebo, secretly tucked away in the secluded, shady, rear garden...... it's where we have breakfast every morning when we are at Mangoes.
Generally, we couldn't have a better location, we are within easy walking distance of all the amenities; a wide range of shops, bars, banks, supermarket, restaurants to suit all pockets - what more could anyone want?
Every little thing we have done to Mangoes has made it that little bit nicer, brighter, homier.
