About David T. Cole

We are David T. Cole and Tara Ariano. Since meeting in St. Catharines, Ontario, twenty years ago and marrying in 1997, we've lived in Toronto, Ontario; New York, NY; and Los Angeles, CA.

We bought this property in 2014, and we both live and work here in the main house. We are web entrepreneurs and two of the co-founders of the website Television Without Pity; since selling it, we've gone on to co-found the website Previously.TV and co-create its several related podcasts, all of which we produce right here at home, ably assisted by Gordon Lightfoot, our five-year-old Great Dane/Pointer mix.

Why David T. Cole chose Kohala Coast

After having visited the Big Island half a dozen times on vacation, we bought this property -- dubbed Fort Awesome after an episode of "NewsRadio," one of our favorite TV shows -- in late 2014. We chose Waimea for its conveniences, its proximity to our favorite beaches, and its quiet. Our neighborhood immediately struck us as homey and friendly, and the kind of place that could be both a comfortable refuge and a serene setting to encourage our creativity.

What makes this guest house unique

We were charmed by the layout of the front yard: setting the houses far back along the edges of the property line makes for a luxurious front lawn, and provides views from both the main and the guest house of the tree swings and mature sheltering trees. We also liked the idea of buying a home with a separate guest house not just so we could host our own far-flung relatives, but also new visitors to the area: since we always loved our visits, we're thrilled at the prospect of helping others discover their favorite activities, meals, and experiences on the Big Island.

Great location, lovely place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

Downtime Abbey was every bit as comfortable as advertised. The guest house is pretty and easy to settle into, with all the amenities you need for a good home base on vacation. The hosts have provided for everything, including recreation toys for enjoying the beaches like boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, beach chairs and more. The town of Waimea is a great central location for exploring the whole island as well as a neat place to stay on its own, with tons of restaurants, interesting shops and great scenery. Dave and Tara were friendly and welcoming, giving great suggestions on places to visit and answering all requests promptly. I would recommend this accommodation to anyone and hope to visit again.

Perfectly located, simple, quiet and comfortable tropical nest.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 29 nights at Ft. Awesome in May-June 2017. Never once did we need something that was not on hand. We were amazed that anyone could be that complete in considering what short term stay folks might need. We had plenty of space, peace, quiet and privacy. The pictures do not do justice in showing this simply decorated, comfy, home we experienced. We felt safe being inside the enclosed yard with an electronic gate. It was nice to be able to park near our front door, also. It was a perfect place for us. Being centrally located, we could drive almost anywhere on the island within an hour. The ocean and beaches and multiple fun sites are within 20 minutes. The town of Wiamea itself has many beautiful or unique sites to see and many restaurants, from McDonalds to those that serve seafood fresh from the ocean that morning. We also enjoyed the frequent farmers markets in Wiamea and nearby areas. Each community on the big island has its own ethic flavor and historical sites. We loved everywhere we went and were greatly blessed to come home each night to Ft. Awesome. If simple and comfortable are among your criteria for housing, you will be happy at Ft. Awesome, too.

Best Hawaii rental!

  • 5 of 5

Dave was so helpful and easy to work with. The house had everything we needed for a fantastic vacation. The location was perfect for visits to Kona, Hilo, and everywhere in between. It was great to be a quick drive to a cute town with nice restaurants. The house was very comfortable, extremely conducive to relaxation after a long day of sightseeing and beachgoing. Highlight of the stay was meeting Gordon, an excellent amenity for dog lovers (but ZERO dog hair or dander in the guest house!). Thanks for everything Dave and Tara! Would stay again.

Quirky, bright, comfy, safe and adorbs

  • 5 of 5

This space is adorbs. Private, clean and comfy with a great little yard. Lots of thoughtful amenities and details - including beach gear and towels and shopping bags and games games games. Main bed was comfortable and plenty of television options to boot. Perfect spot to enjoy the cool and lovely Waimea area - Waipio, Honakaa, Kalopa, the Hamakua coast, and Mauna Kea. Just a gorgeous area. We loved the Farmers Market and beer tasting at the Big Island Brewhaus. Nice cool temps and great playgrounds for the kiddos. Best of all was that the hosts were excellent at communicating, generous and personable, and funny to boot! There is something to be said for a place that has unique quirky fun surprises and eclecticism. We'd totally stay again. Thanks Dave and Tara!

A great location to experience the big Island. Close enough to the beaches but removed from all the tourism. Waimea is a great little town. We hope to be back!
