Greenloaning is a delightful traditional semi-detached cottage situated on the edge of the peaceful conservation village of Allanton. With a large enclosed garden and wonderful views over the surrounding countryside it has recently been completely renovated and is traditionally furnished to a very high standard. It is very well equipped and offers full central heating as well a log burning stove. The cottage is perfectly located to enjoy all that the area has to offer including walking; golf; fishing; cycling; riding; the local historic houses and castles such as Alnwick Castle (Harry Potter), Bamburgh Castle on the beach, Floors Castle and Manderston with its silver staircase; the stunning coastline with the pretty harbour at St Abbs, and the lovely beach at Coldingham with its surfing facilities, as well as locally based quad biking, sailing, canoeing, and clay pigeon shooting etc. In the village itself, and a very short walk away, is one of the best local pubs/restaurants in the area serving real ales and wonderful food (and recently voted in the Times newspaper as one of the top 50 pubs for alfresco dining).

I live locally, just outside of Eccles with my husband Peter and three children. We had a holiday cottage with our last home and I so enjoyed meeting the many guests we had and making the cottage as perfect for them as possible that when we moved house we decided to buy a holiday cottage. I love the fact that many of our guests become friends and visit again and again.

Why Lowri chose Duns
We loved Greenloaning as soon as we saw it despite the fact that it was pretty run down. We completely refurbished the cottage, new floors, new windows, complete plumbing, Central heating, electrics and we even discovered lovely stone original fireplace behind the moden brick one. It is now lovely and cosy with the log burning stove making it very snug. The garden has almost doubled in size since we cut back the overgrown shrubs. Perfect to relax and enjoy the sun and the many songbirds, as well as well as a perfect place for the children and dogs to let off steam. We even discovered an old well (made safe by a new wall surround and grill).
What makes this Cottage unique
Allanton is a lovely village and perfectly located to enjoy all the Borders has to offer, whether it be the beaches, golf courses, or country homes and gardens etc. the village pub is fantastic and offers some of the best food and refreshments in the area. Despite being located off the middle of the village, Greenloaning is very peaceful and is edged by fields on one side. There is a small children's playpark along the lane and the children can go there safely without having to cross a road. Fishing for salmon or sea trout is available close by on the Whiteadder Water through Bluestone Fishing.

Cosy, clean and amazing garden
Had a brill week here. We got very lucky with the weather so enjoyed the garden all evening. Cottage is welcoming and cosy and so peaceful. Kids loved having a small park next to the house. Lovely welcome hamper and lowri is always on hand if you have any questions. The main bedroom is WOW but I found the mattress too hard but that is personal preference. Everything is provided including things you normally forget to bring. Just wish there was a dishwasher (husband’s words hahaah) thanks for having us. Highly recommend. And we will be back xx
Delighted to hear you had a lovely time at Greenloaning and your children enjoyed the park. Its tricky re the mattress as so hard to get one that suits all. I know its firm and have wondered about replacing it with a softer one but then some guests state how much they liked it. Maybe i should put a topper into the cottage for those that want it!. A lovely comfortable cottage in a quiet and relaxing location.
Well equipped with everything thing you might need, including a thoughtful welcome tray of food essentials and some things in the fridge so that you don’t have to find a shop the minute you arrive. The cottage is in a quiet village in a rural area so lots of driving required to get to the tourist spots. Nevertheless it’s ideal if you want a relaxing break in a beautiful area with the added bonus of a lovely spacious garden. I would thoroughly recommend it.

I have had deduct one star solely because the garden although perfect in every other way, was not secure. Which was a real disappointment. A secure garden was one of my main priorities for this holiday, so I could sit outside and relax while the 3 dogs chilled out too. I have 3 rescue hunting breed dogs so had to have them tied on long lines for the duration, which got a bit tangly at times. 2 of the borders are privet hedging, These just needs some wire fencing running around the base where it’s still thin to stop escapees. The other border was a 1m high open picket style fencing with mature shrubs and trees. Both sets of neighbours were lovely and very friendly. There is an Excellent circular dog walk from the village through fields and woods.
We did have a lovely holiday here, the weather was fantastic. Would love to come back sometime.
I am truly sorry that the hedging and fencing was inadequate for keeping your dogs secure and in the garden.. We walked the garden boundary immediately we received your info on the fencing and have already purchased some rabbit wire for the picket fence and have been in contact with our fencer in order to secure the other gaps. Hopefully this should be resolved very quickly.

great cottage, everything you would need
great base for touring the area, lots of things to visit nearby.
There are many beautiful unspoilt beaches from Coldingham Bay with its lifeguard, toilets, shower, cafe and surfing facilities (including wetsuit hire and lessons). Lindesfarne (Holy Island) (30 mins drive), St Abbs harbour with its sea fishing trips (20 mins drive), Goswick beach with its great sand dunes and beautiful Bamburgh beach with its spectacular castle (30 mins drive).
Both Edinburgh and Newcastle airports are just over an hours drive away (approx 50/60 miles). Berwick upon Tweed railway station which is on the London to Edinburgh line runs a great service and can get you to Edinburgh or Newcastle in less than an hour.
Berwick upon Tweed 10 miles, Duns 6 miles, Coldstream 12 miles, Kelso 18 miles and Melrose 28 miles.
The lovely Borders towns of Duns, Kelso and Coldstream are all about 15 minutes drive from Greenloaning. As well as the usual supermarkets, banks and pubs there are many individual shops and places to eat. In Allanton itself is a thriving, cosy and popular pub/restaurant with garden where you can enjoy a drink (from real ale to coffee) or choose from their wonderful restaurant menu using mainly locally sourced products. Or try the Wheatsheaf at Swinton offering excellent food in its award winning restaurant.
In addition to the many golf courses there are a great number of walks from the easy to the more challenging including the Cheviot Hills at the end of the Pennine Way to the stunning walks along the beautiful rugged Northumberland coastline. The Tweed Cycle way offers cycling routes suitable for all ages and abilities. Fly fishing on the infamous River Tweed for salmon or maybe fish for trout at Coldingham Loch. Horse ride through the Cheviots or go for a gallop across the sands on Holy Island. Quad biking and clay pigeon shooting at Abbey St Bathans.

Changeover Day: Friday changeover but can be flexible depending on availability. Arrival from 3pm and departure by 10am.
