About this property
An Oasis In The Land Of Enchantment
Located in the valley below historic Taos, NM, the "distillery" is set under very mature trees, surrounded by extensive gardens while still overlooking the sacred Taos mountain. The original house was built during prohibition and brewed bootleg liquor for the speakeasy in town. We use the house now as a platform for the distillation and exchange of ideas. Our home offers a quiet retreat in an area rich with history and arts. There is something very calming about staying in a house made of the earth. Adobe is a traditional style of architecture which suits the land here. We have added a new kitchen and master suite to the old house, maintaining the charm of houses from this area. There are grand spaces as well as cozy spaces. Warm fireplaces for winter and cool refuges for summer. It has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a library, office and drawing room as well as patios for al fresco dining. The extensive vegetable garden and water feature offer lovely outdoor settings in warm weather. We have a roof top deck which offers spectacular views and the opportunity to sleep out under the stars.

About the host
Hosted by Lee Leonard

Lee Lee is a visual artist who creates artwork inspired by extensive international travels. These days she is inspired by her young son to address issues which are of concern to children at home and abroad. She exhibits her work across the United States, Europe and Asia and is working on a smattering of other projects in countries around the world. Her studio is in a separate building behind the main house. An avid cook, she keeps a fully stocked kitchen and loves eating from their vegetable garden. Her work may be found at and These days she is primarily in Denver as her son has started school there. Peter, Lee Lee's father, constructed an extensive permaculture garden around the distillery, complete with habitat areas, gray water filtrating wetlands, an aquaponics system and greenhouse. Currently there is a gardener in residence who is tending the chickens and growing food in a sustainable manner. Maid service is available.

A 10 minute walk from the historic Taos plaza, we are conveniently located while maintaining the feel of a quiet retreat. The area is historically significant: The Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO site as the oldest continually inhabited structure in the country, and continues to engage the community with traditional dances and events. Before becoming a part of the United States, the area was settled by the Spanish and hosted a number of outlaws. In the early 20th century, Georgia O'Keefe and DH Lawrence helped to establish the area with the Taos Moderns as an art destination. The community continues to thrive with all of these historical influences. Taos Mountain is renowned for outdoor enthusiasts and offers top notch skiing in the winter while the Rio Grande is well known in river running circles. Numerous trails offer outdoor opportunities in all seasons.
