About Mona Rishel-Shissler
My husband (Bryon) and I purchased the James Campbell Farm property in 1990 and spent many years restoring the original (1780's) log house as our home. Subsequently we have refurbished all of the farm buildings and added our "glamping" site at our son's favorite camping spot. We have planted 100's of trees (mostly native species), created vegetable, herb and flower gardens, replanted the orchard, developed fruit vines - red and black raspberries, and grapes as well as blueberries. In addition to raising much of what we eat we cut firewood on our sustainably managed forests and now offer guests the opportunity to catch and release the fish in the pond -- Come and see how 'green' country life can be!
Mona Rishel-Shissler purchased this Cottage in 2016
Why Mona Rishel-Shissler chose Somerset County
Bryon and I were excited to have a chance to expand the opportunities to share our homestead by purchasing the small wooded parcel next to us, rebuilding the cabin, repurposing the pavilion and creating a special place for couples and families to be together. Over the last 8 years guests at our cottage (see: www.vrbo/322410) and glamping site (see: www.vrbo/498403) have asked to bring children and friends. The Woodland Cottage can accommodate an extra 2 guests from Memorial Day through Columbus Day Weekend. Please send an inquiry.
What makes this Cottage unique
This "woodland" cottage is 'tucked' into its very own 'special' spot beside a small stream, in the woods and surrounded by over 800 acres of undeveloped land on our side of Fort Hill Road. There are many types of bird feeders that attract a variety of birds. Flowerbeds attract butterflies. On any given day you might see woodcock, ruffed grouse, wild turkey and white-tailed deer. If you are lucky you might hear a great horned owl, screech owl, or a coyote. The view from deck is forests and mountains as far as the eye can see.

Truly a haven of rest
so peaceful and quiet. Has all the comforts of home and everything you need to prepare meals when dining in. Trails to hike within walking distance near the property. Mona and Bryon are wonderful hosts. The bed was so comfortable- just one more thing that makes this cottage a place you want to return to time and again.
Many thanks, we are so happy you enjoyed staying at our Woodland Cottage. Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter each season is an opportunity to enjoyed nature, solitude and a cozy place to settle in. Looking forward to your return.
Beautiful, serene, and comfortable.
This cottage is so homey, and the view is amazing. We had everything we needed for our weekend. We especially enjoyed watching all the birds who visited the fully stocked feeders. We can’t wait to return.
Lovely
We loved this weekend away from everything. Highly recommended! Thank you for everything.
Clean, quiet, thoughtful preparation
We booked a New Year's getaway at this cabin. The weather went against us - it was single-digits and we got a lot of snow. Thankfully we brought food! Everything you need to cook (utensils, coffee pot, silverware, pots and pans) was available. Despite the extreme cold, the house was warm and cozy. There were multiple bird feeders and we really enjoyed watching the visitors! They have interesting books and a good selection of DVDs. Plenty of towels in the bathroom and kitchen, good water pressure and it was CLEAN. I often stay in 5-star hotels (for work) and this cabin was just as clean. The one thing I would suggest to any would-be travelers: it is remote. That's part of the charm of course, but come prepared. You won't find craft beer or decent wine within 20 miles. If your the health-food type, definitely none of that around either. Thanks to the weather we did not get to enjoy any of the outside amenities but the view was peaceful. I'm a travel snob and I recommend it! Regarding the cabin itself we had zero complaints or issues!
Much more than expected!
My wife and I needed a rest from the hustle and bustle of life in the D.C. suburbs (AKA.... DMV). So we planned to see Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. Needed a place to stay and came accross “the woodland cottage”. Totally exceeded all expectations! Immaculately clean, cozy, comfortable, quaint, lots of positive adjectives could describe the stay. An immersive landscape with views from the many windows and huge deck, waking to a cup of coffee greeted by the many species of beautiful birds, reading a book by the gas fireplace, and lighting a fire in the fire pit with a gentle snow falling were just some of the highlights. We brought groceries in from home for our meals and everything we needed for meal prep was there. Great experience and would definitely love to stay again.
Pristine and complete facilities, considerate host
We highly recommend the cabin and our hosts for outdoor activities and visit to Fallingwater. There were many thoughtful touches at the cabin including lovely rustic wooden furniture, gas fireplace, fire ring and firewood outside, plenty of cooking equipment. Couldn’t have been better for us. Thank you for the safety Orange.
