About Mona Rishel-Shissler

My husband (Bryon) and I purchased the James Campbell Farm property in 1990 and spent many years restoring the original (1780's) log house as our home. Subsequently we have refurbished all of the farm buildings and added our "glamping" site at our son's favorite camping spot. We have planted 100's of trees (mostly native species), created vegetable, herb and flower gardens, replanted the orchard, developed fruit vines - red and black raspberries, and grapes as well as blueberries. In addition to raising much of what we eat we cut firewood on our sustainably managed forests and now offer guests the opportunity to catch and release the fish in the pond -- Come and see how 'green' country life can be!

Mona Rishel-Shissler purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Mona Rishel-Shissler chose Laurel Highlands

Bryon and I were excited to have a chance to expand the opportunities to share our homestead by purchasing the small wooded parcel next to us, rebuilding the cabin, repurposing the pavilion and creating a special place for couples and families to be together. Over the last 8 years guests at our cottage (see: www.vrbo/322410) and glamping site (see: www.vrbo/498403) have asked to bring children and friends. The Woodland Cottage can accommodate an extra 2 guests from Memorial Day through Columbus Day Weekend. Please send an inquiry.

What makes this cottage unique

This "woodland" cottage is 'tucked' into its very own 'special' spot beside a small stream, in the woods and surrounded by over 800 acres of undeveloped land on our side of Fort Hill Road. There are many types of bird feeders that attract a variety of birds. Flowerbeds attract butterflies. On any given day you might see woodcock, ruffed grouse, wild turkey and white-tailed deer. If you are lucky you might hear a great horned owl, screech owl, or a coyote. The view from deck is forests and mountains as far as the eye can see.

Fantastic experience!

  • 5 of 5

We visited for a weekend with my wife and two sons. I was thrilled with the quality, condition and cleanliness of the property - it exceeded my expectations in every way. The kitchen and covered back deck are both fantastic - the photos do them no justice. We spent lots of time watching the birds and relaxing by the fire after a day filled with hiking in Ohiopyle. The owners have gone above and beyond to accommodate guests in a variety of ways that really make a difference (where others may cut corners): fresh flowers inside, bird feeders loaded, high quality fixtures/appliances in kitchen and bath (even a heated towel rack), plenty of games/puzzles for a rainy day, dried/split wood for the fire ring (including newspaper and kindling), marshmallow roasting sticks, salamander boards for the kiddos to enjoy, lots of comfortable seating - and the list goes on and on. My wife was particularly happy about the quality/comfort of the bed and bedding and that everything was carefully made upon our arrival (even the trundle for our son). Overall, I was truly impressed, and commend the owners for creating such a fantastic experience - all of the comforts of home in the middle of the beatiful Laurel Highlands.

Owner's Response: We are looking forward to families bring the children - year after year and/or season after season and very much appreciate this family letting us know how much they enjoyed there stay. Bryon and I are usually close by - our farmstead is right beside this small wooded parcel that is then surrounded by woodland to the south of Fort Hill Road and one family farm to the north so it is very private but accessible to many outdoor opportunities in the Laurel Highlands.

Perfect getaway from everything.

  • 5 of 5

Perfect layout for enjoying nature - the large deck on the back, firepit, and the "glamping" space - everything was so relaxing. Loved that it was so private. The stream running along the house - sound and site - was beautiful. Never a bird fan, but now, after seeing all the birds every morning - I may have been converted.

The little details were well thought out; there was no wanting for anything. Really great!

Beautiful House and Property with a Great Hostess

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I wanted to disappear for a weekend and just unplug from the world... We stayed May 5-7, with absolutely no plans other than to disconnect from the world and reconnect with each other... The cottage had everything we needed and was perfect for the two of us... They did a great job with the updates/renovations... It's a beautiful place and perfect for a peaceful, low key getaway... It's definitely off the beaten path and "away from it all"... The property is gorgeous, as well... Nothing but woods and streams around as far as you can see... The weekend we were there, it rained most of the time, so we didn't get to do any exploring, which we didn't mind... It actually made us spend more time hanging out and just talking... In addition to the rain, there was an extremely territorial little grouse hanging around that we weren't really interested in fighting with... I don't say this as a negative, as we didn't go with the intention of wandering around in the woods, anyways, and it IS smack dab in the middle of the woods! Nature cannot be controlled, and he was just doing what he's supposed to do... Mona was a perfect hostess and a terrifically sweet person... We were very happy with our stay and will most likely be back, possibly with our daughters next time... Thank you so much for a great weekend!

Great Fun!

  • 4 of 5

We went for an anniversary weekend and had a fantastic experience. The place is located centrally to a great many attractions (Falling Water, many state parks, great fishing, wineries & so much more) and activities. Everything is modern and yet you still get that "rustic" wilderness experience the moment you step outside. Tons of birds everywhere, including a rather bold male grouse (Sherman) who doesn't like humans invading his territory! The abundant chipmunks are adorable & endlessly entertaining. Great fire pit where we made s'mores. The babbling brook that runs right next the the cottage is so peaceful and relaxing. We met Mona, one of the owners, and she was wonderful. She made herself available for any questions we had. Overall, we had a great time and will certainly come back again...
