Uninhabitable Conditions, Health Concerns Ignored – Unsafe for Families
We booked this property for a 7-night stay, but unfortunately had to vacate after just the second night due to serious health and safety concerns. The unit had an overpowering odor of Sargassum (decaying seaweed), which entered the interior through an inadequate ventilation system. The fumes were not only unpleasant but caused respiratory distress for members of our family, triggering asthma symptoms and exposing us to what we believe were toxic airborne conditions.We communicated these issues multiple times to the property manager, explaining that the odor was strongest at night and made it unsafe to remain in the unit. Rather than addressing the ventilation or offering tangible solutions, the response was limited to recommending daytime outdoor activities — which did nothing to resolve the overnight exposure to harmful fumes. Ultimately, we had no choice but to evacuate for the health and safety of our family.The property manager was not empathetic and refused to issue a partial refund, despite our early departure and the legitimate health hazards. According to VRBO's Book with Confidence Guarantee and Rental Agreement Standards, guests are entitled to a partial or full refund when a property is unsafe, uninhabitable, or significantly misrepresented. This property clearly failed to meet basic habitability standards.The unit’s failure to provide adequate air quality, combined with the disregard for our medical concerns, made the stay not only unpleasant but dangerous.
