About Shiela Young and Matt Laird

We love Colorado! Shiela is a native and Matt came here from Mill Valley, CA in the 80's and never left. We raise our three kids in Boulder and love to ski and enjoy the beauty of our Rocky Mountains. Matt owns his own water meter company and Shiela teaches in the public school system. When we aren't busy with dance, baseball, football and soccer, we love to travel to Europe, Mexico and beautiful spots in the states!

We set up our condo primarily as our spot to stay when we go ski. It is very comfortable and luxurious and great for kids! There is lots of space to lounge around together on the new L-shaped leather motorized reclining couch or the dark wood dining table that can expand up to 10!

Shiela Young and Matt Laird purchased this condo in 2003

Fantastic!

Our family had such a wonderful stay, thank you Shiela! Where to start..? the space... an awesome open floorplan with so much sleeping space. The property was stocked with everything needed to make anyone feel right at your home. Ohhh, the timed gas fireplace was amazing, you wake up and turn the dial, instantly a warm flame to get you ready for the slopes. All appliances are brand new (with the exception of the classic sub-zero fridge, which nothing in the new market can touch...). Even dry your gear in the frontload washer/dryer. Here's where it get's good- after a long ski day, all you want to do is relax with the family... just kick back on the 10 person L couch with electric recline to recuperate with a big screen TV. Seriously the most comfortable couch ever. I can't say enough about this property, take your family here and build everlasting memories. Thanks again. Clayton and Fam.

Great Place to relax after skiing

This place is really big and comfortable. Well stocked and everything you could use for cooking is here as well as some staples which we appreciated. The bus stop is nearby and we found the racquet club down the street as well. Had a great time

Could not have been better. We've HomeAway'ed several years in Vail at Christmas and this was the best yet. Of course, more luxurious places, with ski-in/ski-out are available, but are way outside our price range. Bedding was very good, plenty of sheets, blankets, pillows, etc. Nothing ratty or saggy or over-the-hill.

Kitchen was not big, but very easy for 2 adults to cook and clean together, even with grandkids underfoot asking for this or that. A wide variety of extra appliances (stand mixer, crock pot, blender, toaster, coffee maker, etc.) are nice and work well. Lots of pots and pans. Maybe bring a good chef’s knife with you…the knives are sort of utilitarian and flimsy, but that’s no big deal if you are not picky about knives. Great TV, many DVDs, BIG dining room table seats 10 comfortably which was important to us---6 big chairs and two benches that can seat 2-3 each easily. It's on the top floor of a 3 story building, so a few extra steps in and out, but we felt that was perfect as we had no upstairs neighbors that might have altered our quality of sleep. Not far from I-70 but you can't hear traffic unless you strain to hear it. Nice fireplace (gas) and it is very pleasant.

Owners are super-accommodating, and quick to reply with any concerns. Towels, sheets, etc. are plush and in good shape. Washer and Dryer are right off the kitchen, so very accessible. It's easy to integrate 'throwing-in-a-load' amidst the chaos of everyone going in and out the door for skiing. Hardwood floors throughout are clean and easy to keep that way.

The 4th bedroom in a Vail Condo is often a loft, with little privacy. But here, owners have enclosed the open loft with a large window and blinds so the upstairs bedroom (and en-suite shower and toilet) are isolated and quiet. Much better than average.

All in all, a terrific condo!!

Promising but incomplete

We enjoyed a pleasant time with our family in a beautiful location but the rental requires serious improvements before we would stay again. It appeared that they had not finished remodeling.

PROS: Spacious; Loved the couch; Beautiful floors and granite; nice location near a park; quiet; loved having a washer and dryer.

Cons: Smoke detector dangling from wall, apparently not working; Electric baseboard heater had exposed wires - thankfully we had no small chIldren;

No screens in two bedrooms. Since it was hot had to open window with no screen and a couple bees flew in.; Window casings were rotting ;sliding screen door to the deck would not stay on the track; coffee maker did not work.

All in all, it has the potential to be a very nice condo but it is not ready to be rented to others.

Owner's Response: We are happy you enjoyed your stay, the new leather couch, the beautiful floors and granite. We even had one renter purchase the same couch for his family; he thought it was so comfortable. We apologize for any inconveniences you might have felt. Like most rentals in East Vail, a rustic and classic charm is to be expected. Condos in East Vail were built in the late 70’s, early 80’s and have been remodeled. East Vail is one of the earlier built neighborhoods and sits at the foot of the Gore Mountain Range providing a wonderful alpine environment and lower rental rates compared to Vail Village or Lionshead. And with Vail’s free bus system, you are never that far from anything. The entire condo was repainted and refurnished in 2015. Hardwood floors were installed throughout the condo. The condo has a new front load washer/dryer, a new stove and new flat screen TV’s. We do have the original functioning fridge. We also have the original windows. I was unaware that a couple of screens were missing. Since your complaint, we have notified the Timber Falls manager what we expect when he does a walk through after each renter. Missing screens and a broken fire alarm are unacceptable. They all have been replaced. A couple of the windows have been sealed shut after surviving many winters. They all have been pried open and are fully functioning. The coffee maker has been replaced. We are looking into how to keep the sliding glass door on its tracks. The door opens and shuts fully, but sometimes needs a little effort. It is in our budget to replace all the windows and sliding glass door and are looking into options. The electric baseboard heater has been addressed. When people come tromping in with their ski boots, a baseboard in the entryway has been banged up. We are replacing it with a new cover. Vail’s altitude is 8,022 ft and the average high in the summer is in the mid-70'sº F (low 20sº C). It has been a very hot summer in Colorado this year. We are putting in a couple of large swamp coolers for those few needed days in the summer to keep things cool. Our place has been solely a family getaway with a few selected renters. We started to rent our condo last winter through VRBO and thank you for pointing out needed repairs. We feel our condo is a pleasantly enjoyable and up-to-date place to stay, taken in the context that it is in the center of the more old-school, classic area of Vail Valley. We thank you for your feedback and have taken care of the issues.
