Highland Lake House - Epic Lake Views, Easy Lake Access, Fully Appointed Home!

Highland Lake House is a rare example of a private lakeside retreat, sited on level, natural terrain with over 250' of water frontage. Situated on a point, this is one of the few places on the lake where you can enjoy both full sunrise and partial sunset. This property comes with 2 docks and the deepest part of the lake is just a stone's throw away to enjoy boating, fishing and water sports. Highland Lake is 2 hours by car from Boston and 20 minutes from Portland. This 3 bedroom home with 6 beds (1 king, 1 queen, 2 twins, 1 full hid-a-bed, 1 twin in sunroom), and 2 full baths, was originally built as a cottage in 1910, and since then has been converted to a year round home with a modern kitchen and amenities. Memorable features include a sandy beach, garage, on demand generator and a classic Victorian cottage look, complete with a turret and large wrap around porch with gorgeous panoramic views of Highland Lake. This is an excellent place to stay anytime of the year. In the spring the new plant and leaf growth is pretty, in the summer the lake is very nice for many activities, in the fall the leaf colors are beautiful, and in the winter the frozen lake offers interesting views and adventures.

We loved our stay at the Highland Lake House. The property was perfect for our family’s Thanksgiving holiday. We all enjoy cooking and the kitchen was very well equipped. The lakefront location was relaxing and beautiful but only a couple of miles from the grocery store and other amenities. Matt was a great host; very responsive and helpful. Bottom line, it was a great visit by any measure. We look forward to a return visit.

Location is directly on the lake. Beautiful views. There are kayaks and paddle boats you can use. Location is 10 miles from Portland which is great to visit for food and more

Another great stay

This property has worked very well for my family for the past two years. We are able to hang out on the porch overlooking the lake and swim and paddle as we want. It is also close enough to Portland to go in a get a good meal. I am loath to write such a good review because it results in the house being booked so much. But truth is the truth.

My family of 4 spent a nice week at this home during a rare heat wave in June. We enjoyed the comforts of the home and the beautiful view of the lake from the wraparound porch. We greatly appreciated the owner making an exception to accept our Great Dane who exceeded the 50lb dog limit. :) Things I wish I’d known: neighbors have access rights to the lake through the property and despite the 2 docks, it’s not an ideal spot for swimming (shallow, muddy or very rocky). The kayaks, paddle boards and peddle boat were nice to have to explore other areas of the lake. Also, of note, if you want to bring a boat, you must be able to hand-carry it into the lake (no boat launch available for renters). Overall, it was a relaxing week on a beautiful lake.

Very nice house with a great location

Our family had a great time in our short stay at the Highland Lake House. The location is absolutely gorgeous and the water toys provided by the owner were a wonderful perk not found at a lot of rentals. We had a couple very minor issues with the property and Matt was very quick to respond via text at his direct number. We had a good time and upon leaving to go on to Bar Harbor we actually wished we had spent more time at the highland lake house.

Terrific Time

Beautiful, lakeside retreat. Great kayaking! Home was clean and had plenty of room. Modern conveniences, close to groceries, and spacious fire pit area. Morning coffee on the porch is a must. Excellent fishing straight from the dock!

Perfect Lake getaway

This place was perfect! It's spacious, clean and well equipped with everything you need. The lake views are breathtaking! Amazing location, 15 minutes from everything in north Windham, 20 minutes from Portland

Fantastic location/Amazing views

We had the best visit to Portland, Windham and surrounding areas and the house was simply awesome. Very clean, fully appointed with towels, comfortable linens and beds, and all the kitchen gadgets needed. Matt was very helpful in answering questions ahead of time and made the process easy! The lake views were stunning and the outside area provided a great space for kids to explore a bit. The house is centrally located with easy access to several great spots. We had quick trips to snow tubing, dog sledding, ice fishing and several lighthouses and hikes along the coast. Highly recommend this property!!!

Early winter stay in Windham area

Property was very nice & convenient to Windham & Portland restaurants & activities. House was well maintained, and exceptionally cozy with the wood stove. Best coffee setup for any rental I have ever used which was a big plus for our crowd. Thanks

Holiday Getaway

Very nice and quiet location (in December) for our family to celebrate the holidays Plenty of space in the house for 5 or 6 adults and nice views on the lake. Well equipped and modern kitchen and convenient to Portland. We enjoyed the stay very much.

Excellent Lake House Stay

Relaxing Family vacation

We had a lovely stay at Matthew’s property. A great location, with beautiful views, and everything we might need. This was our second time renting here and there were some nice upgrades, new mattresses, a new TV upstairs with sleep sofa. Highly recommend for off season for a quiet getaway to watch the sun set off the porch and listen to the Loons. Also close to Portland.

Lakehouse wonderful time

We had a wonderful time staying at this property, and it exceeded our expectations. The photos don't do the property justice. Great front porch to loll away the hours; read, jump on a paddleboard, go for a swim, prepare a great meal in the well equipped kitchen, and repeat. A/c was essential for the climate and it worked well. Lots of seating in the living areas as well as two tables to play games. Loved the covered part of the porch where we watched a lightening storm one night - spectacular!

Can I live here?!?!?

This house has me rethinking my life’s choices. Thus far, my choices in life have resulted in me NOT living in nor owning a lake house in Maine. After spending a long weekend at the Highland Lake House, I am regretting this. My friends and I enjoyed our long weekend here so much that we were all sad to leave and we were trying to figure out some way to exert eminent domain/squatter’s rights to stay forever. The house was well-appointed, clean, and the location….perfection. The pictures on VRBO really don’t do it justice. The addition of the kayaks, paddle boards, firepit, and such were a lovely and fun addition to the amenities of the property. I also very much appreciated the super comfortable beds and modern upgrades that did not detract from the charm of this old home. I will definitely be trying to talk future vacation partners into booking this home. Thank you.

Wonderful!

Enjoyed our stay at the Highland Lake House. The house was very comfortable with room enough for four adults and two teens. We loved the beds and wrap around porch and appreciated the air conditioning as the weather was very hot. The lake was quiet and we made good use of the pedal boat, paddle boards and kayaks. Lake view on three sides

Three generations family of 5 and two dogs enjoyed July 4th week in this amazing Victorian cottage. Owner Matt was super responsive from first inquiry to questions during our stay. Watercraft as advertised, extensive kitchen provisions including vinegars, oils, and so many spices—vanilla, garlic and onion powder, even cream of tartar!—blenders, two outdoor grills ready-to-go, handsome tableware. Two nights of quality fireworks from all around the Lake. We made one half-day excursion to Cape Elizabeth and Portland for lobster rolls and Beals ice cream. Highland Lake is mostly quiet, with only occasional jet skiers or tubers. Awesome wrap-around porch great for reading, relaxing. Massive flat-screen TVs. My favorite room, the single-bed sleeping porch, and downstairs bathroom worked well for me, a grandmother with limited mobility. Worth SIX STARS or more!

Two Great Weeks

We enjoyed everything about the Highland Lake House! Matt has made sure that everything you could need for a relaxing, fun vacation is provided. Kitchen’s well stocked, we loved using the kayaks, paddle boards, and pedal boats, beds are comfy, AC if you need it, great wrap around porch and screened in porch, plenty of room for our family of 6. We highly recommend this great home!

Amazing view, clean, and fully equipped with anything you may need. Matt was easily accessible, always responded quickly. Close to Portland and local neighborhood had awesome restaurants. Highly recommend this listing, you wont be disappointed.
