Unfortunately, our stay was extremely disappointing due to both the condition of the cottage and how our concerns were handled.Upon arrival, it was clear the cottage had not been properly cleaned. There was splatter under the toilet, toothpaste residue covering the bathroom sink, vegetables left in the kitchen sink, and a noticeable layer of dust, crumbs, and animal hair throughout the entire place. The refrigerator and freezer were packed with someone else’s food, including open and freezer-burned items, and the coffee maker still had old coffee grounds in it. We contacted the host politely and simply asked if the cleanliness issues could be addressed so we could feel comfortable. Instead, we were immediately told we were wrong and that the property was perfectly fine. We were then bombarded with messages about refunding us and having us leave. We never asked to leave or requested a refund. Because we were traveling with two dogs and had extremely limited options for alternate accommodations after driving 10 hours, our group decided to purchase cleaning supplies and clean the cottage ourselves so it would be livable. Out of fear of retaliation and being left without accommodations during our vacation, we waited until the end of our stay to contact VRBO. Unfortunately, VRBO was not helpful in resolving the situation. We understand that a cottage doesn’t need to be perfect, but basic cleanliness and respectful communication should be expected.
