Surrounded by open parkland and picturesque village life, Tanyard Barn provides a peaceful, private setting while remaining superbly connected. With easy access to the A1(M) via Junction 47 (just over three miles away), it is perfect for luxury leisure stays, professionals, or contractors needing quiet, work-friendly accommodation. The property offers secure gated parking, fast 500 Mbps Wi-Fi, and stunning views, all within walking distance of the village pub and shop.

The Space

Ground Floor – Bedrooms & Shower Room
Tanyard Barn has two beautifully appointed bedrooms. The king-size bedroom features double wardrobes, and the stylish twin bedroom has a built-in wardrobe. The contemporary shower room includes a walk-in shower, heated towel rail, and high-quality fittings. There is also a spacious cloakroom offering additional storage. Family-friendly touches, including a travel cot and highchair, are available on request.

First Floor – Open-Plan Living
The first floor opens into a light-filled, open-plan living space designed for comfort and relaxation. The lounge area includes a sofa, armchairs, and smart TV with Netflix. The fully equipped contemporary kitchen has a fridge, cooker, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, toaster, and kettle. Underfloor heating provides discreet warmth throughout the year.

Outdoor Space & Extras
Guests can enjoy a private terrace overlooking Whixley Park, perfect for morning coffee, alfresco dining, or relaxing at sunset. Crisp hotel-quality linen and fluffy towels are provided. Tanyard Barn is steeped in history. Originally part of the tannery outbuildings of Tanyard House and later the village pub, it was fully renovated in 2014 to bring the old buildings back to life while preserving their heritage. Lovely property, friendly host and fantastic location to explore York and surrounding area. Cattal station just up the road with trains into York, Harrogate, Knaresborough and Leeds. Would return again.

Lovely stay at the Barn in Whixley. The barn was immaculately clean, had a fabulous layout with bedrooms downstairs very modern but with character. Michelle the host was very friendly and informative. The barn is very well located, would defiantly recommend and would return again.

A lovely peaceful location - very convenient for Harrogate and York. The property was clean with up to date decor - nice view from the sitting room window. The breakfast of cereal/croissants was a nice touch. We also found a lovely pub about 10 minutes drive away with amazing food - there were several to choose from. The owner was friendly and helpful. Suitable for a couple or a small family - there is one bedroom with a double bed, and the other with twin beds.

I’ve always loved renovating properties, and when I discovered Tanyard House and its historic outbuildings in 2012, I knew it was a special project. I moved in 2013 and spent the following year restoring the buildings, finally completing the renovations in 2014. It has been a real privilege to bring these historic buildings back to life, and in 2015 I opened them as holiday lets to share their charm with visitors.

I love being a host because it allows me to share a piece of North Yorkshire history and help guests enjoy the peace, beauty, and character of village life. I’m happy to give tips on exploring the area, from scenic walks and historic houses to nearby towns and the coast, or I can let guests simply relax and enjoy the tranquility of the property.

Staying here means enjoying the tranquillity of rural North Yorkshire while being part of a community that values its history and natural surroundings.

Tanyard Barn isn’t just a place to stay - it’s a living piece of Whixley’s history. One of the oldest homes in the village, Tanyard House and its outbuildings tell the story of a working Yorkshire community, woven into the very fabric of village life.

The house takes its name from the tannery that once operated here. Long before holiday lets existed, this was where the village tanner lived and worked, transforming animal hides into rich, strong leather - a skilled craft essential to rural life. The outbuildings were once bustling with tannery activity, where hides were soaked, treated, and prepared using traditional methods, and every beam and wall carries echoes of this industrious past.

The beautifully converted Tanyard Barn has its own story. In the early 19th century, it was a village pub called The Crown, a lively hub where locals gathered, shared stories, and celebrated community life. The old well still exists below Tanyard House, historically providing water for both the tannery and the pub. These features offer a tangible link to the daily life and industry of the past.

Tanyard Cottage, another converted outbuilding, shares in this heritage. Together, Tanyard House, Tanyard Barn, and Tanyard Cottage form a historic cluster where guests can immerse themselves in the authentic working life of the village and the unique story of North Yorkshire’s rural past.
