Pirates, Forts, and Living History
Long before it became a favorite beach getaway, this 27-mile stretch of paradise was a wild frontier.

* Pirate Legends: In the early 1800s, the famous pirate Jean Lafitte and his crew used this exact peninsula as a hideout. Local legend says he buried treasure under the coastal oak trees!
* The Iron Lighthouse: At the western tip sits the iconic Point Bolivar Lighthouse. Built in 1872, this historic iron structure survived the great hurricanes of 1900 and 1915, providing a safe haven for hundreds of locals.
* Fort Travis: Located right by the ferry, this historic fort defended the Texas coast during both World War I and World War II. Today, you can walk among its historic concrete bunkers and enjoy panoramic ocean views.
