Bob, Tori - We're very happy you were with us over Columbus Day weekend, which is a beautiful time to be in northern New Mexico, with the fall weather, the deep blue skies and cottonwoods all golden along the Chama River. We missed this magnificence this year, but were happy that you enjoyed all of the fall beauty from Casa Paloma's patio, portal, balcony and windows. Perhaps you even had an evening fire?... Hi Anne, glad you enjoyed your brief get-a-way from Colorado city life. For some unknown reason, by far most of our guests this summer have booked through the 'other hosting site', which is very unusual. It's usually the other way around. Erin, we were happy you, your friend and your dogs could visit Casa Paloma over Labor Day weekend, living so close to us - you, from Santa Fe, and your friend from Albuquerque. Looks like, though the weather was warm those days, you enjoyed Paloma's cool comfort of inside the house - and, of course, the astounding views and the open night sky. Eileen, you and your friend are pastel artists, if I remember correctly, and were headed down to Albuquerque together for a pastel workshop, stopping by Casa Paloma for an artsy getaway, on your way... Pete and I are glad that we were what you were looking for, meeting and hopefully exceeding your artistic eye for ever-changing landscapes in skies that dwarf our mountains! Please return, when you have more time, and set up a table easel on the north end of our big dining table... paint with your pastels (or watercolors, or oils... many have even beaded from this table). Denver, you and your family came in and stayed with us for a week at Casa Paloma in late June of '21, during Covid and when the weather was heating up. Yet you followed our shade management suggestions, which kept Paloma cool, and had a wonderful time, both in and around our home and exploring the endless options for adventure in our area. Jennifer, realizing your family was going to be at Casa Paloma during one of the two heat domes that covered much of the northwestern regions of the United States for an extended time, I spoke with you in depth about 'shade management' we use at the house. It is not perfect, but usually it is effective if followed. Open the windows at night to the chill desert air (a 30 degree drop in temp, usually), then close the windows in the daytime and draw the Smart Shears that we provide for the SW bedroom windows, blocking the heat. We have two oscillating fans and have installed ceiling fans in most rooms. I have personally worked upstairs when the temperature was 93 degrees in the afternoon. With the shades closed & the ceiling fan on, I was comfortable & I am a heat wimp. Few houses in northern NM have AC, as it wasn't needed when they were built. But with climate warming, I'm afraid we're all going to be suffering under escalating temperatures and more frequent heat domes. We cannot control the weather or where it will happen to hit. You were there when temps were in mid-to upper 90s (in mid-August this can certainly happen; you did come to the high desert in summer), but temps in other parts of the country during this heat dome reached 115 degrees. Thank God we didn't see those broiling days and my heart goes out to those who did. One benefit of summer travel to the high desert is that this is 'monsoon season', when we get much of our annual rainfall in the way of afternoon thunderstorms. Not only do these storms provide dramatic skies, they often cool the temps down considerably, with the rains, afterwards. We had a good monsoon season this year. Lots of desperately needed rainfall. Just ask our weeders, working overtime! I am glad you enjoyed the rest of your stay in our home. We truly try to make guests comfortable in so many other ways that we are able to control. We even built a beautiful two-bay carport to shade cars and protect them from hail that sometimes occurs during these monsoon storms. The unstoppable views, the patio and balcony, comfortable bedrooms, the spacious kitchen filled with cooking supplies - there is SO much to love and enjoy in our home.

Kirk, we did not talk much before or after your quick, drive-through visit on your way back to Texas from points north. But Pete and I hope you and your family will come back to Abiquiu', as a destination, this time - and be sure to bring groceries!! Our kitchen is roomy and pretty much fully equipped for feeding one's family gourmet meals. Safe travels - Laura
