DUNSTAFFNAGE CASTLE
The unobscured, views of Dunstaffnage Castle, the surrounding islands, hills and mountains of Mull, Morvern, Lismore, (where Pictish kings were buried), Eileen More, Ben Mor, Beinn Lora, Ben Cruachan and the tip of Ben Nevis, all can be viewed from “Castle View House”. Dunstaffnage Castle is one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, dating back to the 1200s. Behind it’s impressive, formidable, rock solid presence, lies an equally formidable history. Brutal battles were fought, won and lost laying claim to the castle. One of the victors, Scotland’s national hero “ Robert the Bruce” lay siege to the castle in 1308 after the battle of the Pass Of Branda.

In May 1493 King James the 1V of Scotland, son of Mary Queen of Scots, sailed to Dunstaffnage Castle where he met with Highland Clan Chiefs from the various regions who made their submission to the King resulting in the Highlands and islands falling directly under Royal control. In 1496 the Royal Council decreed that the Clan Chiefs would be held responsible for the crimes of the islanders. Defiance and and rest followed.

Government forces occupied the castle during the Jacobite uprising. Bonnie Prince Charlie sweetheart, Flora McDonald was imprisoned there in 1746 before being transferred to the Tower of London for assisting in his escape after the defeat of the Jacobites at the battle of Culloden. Her courage and bravery and the part she played in the prince’s escape is immortalised in the “Sky Boat Song”, published in 1884.

It is said that the “Green Lady” haunts the castle. In the woodland grounds can be found the ruins of the castle chapel with a story akin to a Shakespearean drama. In 1462 the 3rd Lorn of the Lorn, Sir John Stewart and his bridal party was ambushed on the way from the castle to the chapel where he was to wed the mother of his son. He was violently attacked by a vengeful relative, AlanMcCoule. . Before dying he was quickly carried into the chapel where he made his wedding vows,, thus securing his sons inheritance.

STONE OF DESTINY
It’s also said that The Stone Of Destiny (used at the coronation of the Scottish Monarch‘s) resided for a time at the castle before it was removed by Edward the 1st to Westminster Abbey.

On completion of archaeological digs and much restoration Dunstaffnage Castle opened its doors to welcome visitors from all around the world.

Serene place to unwind and explore
Four of us (mum, dad and two adult sons) stayed for a week here. It proved the perfect base to enjoy the area. The house is quite small, as per the description, but it had everything we needed and the most stunning views across the bay. The light changes constantly and if you paint, bring your paints. Turner did and it’s obvious why!! Oban is within very easy reach for shopping, meals out, trips to the islands, the lovely Ganavan Sands and more. We had such a great time and we’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Thank you!

Very pleasant stay
Nice little house with terrace / garden and great view . Located close to main road (without disturbance) so easy access to Oban and Glencoe House is very cosy and welcoming and ‘fit for purpose’ , very nice comfortable bedrooms. Ground floor area is small ( but we kind of imagined that from the pictures) so really just for 4 . Communication with owner was very good . A tip for improvement would be to have more cutlery ( during our stay only 4 left of forks/ knives ) and glasses etc and a small dishwasher . But overall a pleasant stay

About the host

Host profile image
I was born and brought up in Scotland but have lived all of my adult life in London, returning to holiday in this particular captivating area of Scotland each year.
I purchased “ Castle View House” in May 2019 and spent from early July until December 2019 refurbishing the property, creating permaculture gardens - little wild flower meadow patch, lavender pathway borders and planting fruit and nut trees and turning the space into a little natural habitat to experience and enjoy the natural wildlife on the doorstep, fresh sea air, the never ending magical changing sky and sea views and the sea-shore where herons perch, swans gracefully glide by and ducks waddle along the grassy pathway while little rabbits frolic on the hill at the front of the house, truly a little wild natural haven - an nature lover, artist/photographer’s paradise.
Unfortunately, due to Covid I was forced to cancel many bookings last year and the beginning of 2021.

Why they chose this property

CASTLE VIEW HOUSE - DUNSTAFFNAGE BAY is the only property available for a holiday let in this little stretch of eight houses only a few yards from the shoreline. There is no road between the house and the shoreline, only a grassy pathway where ducks waddle up to the garden from the sea. The very quiet rural location has the benefit of a well stocked village grocery shop within a few minutes walk, also a marina, hotel, bar and two restaurants only a few minutes walk and the added benefit of very easy access to the nearby bustling Oban town. (The best of both worlds - quiet, peaceful seaside village and less than 10 minutes from bustling town with an excellent bus service if you don’t want to drive into town ). Also, within walking distance is the historical Dunstaffnage Castle. The view from “Castle View Cottage” of Dunstaffnage Castle is endorsed by one of Britain’s most celebrated artists Joseph Mallard William Turner in his “Dunstaffnage Castle and Loch Linnhe from accross Dunstaffnage Bay 1831”. It was sketched from the same vantage point as where “Castle View Cottage” now stands. The sketch can be viewed at Tate Britain www.tate.org.uk. It can also be be viewed in person by appointment at Tate Britain London
HISTORY/WILDLIFE/NATURAL BEAUTY
The property is in the perfect location for lovers of wildlife, natural beauty, history, sailing, walking, sports in general. It has the most magnificent spectacular views from both inside the cottage and the garden. The unobscured views of the ebb and flow of the tide and the ever changing sky, mesmerising sun rises and sun sets are truly spellbinding sights to behold.

What makes this property unique

No road between the house and the shoreline. .
Twenty yards to shoreline.
Unobscured views of the historic Dunstaffnage Castle, the sea, mountains and small islands.
Walking distance to grocery store, pub, restaurant, hotel, castle, SAMs, beaches And hills.
Fledgling permaculture gardens - wild flower meadow patch, lavender path borders, fruit and nut trees.
