Relax with a drink while you gaze out at the woodland view through the panoramic window or lounge on your private deck. At night stargaze through the skylight from the comfort of the king sized bed as you snuggle up under a down duvet. The kitchenette has all of your cooking essentials to prepare a meal. The geodome’s porch has a BBQ with a side burner for your exclusive use and there is a cooler for your food, kettle, french press coffee maker, plates, cups, cutlery, utensils, cutting boards, pots and pans. Enjoy your private outdoor space which includes a table and fire pit to roast marshmallows while you watch “nature’s TV”. In the warmer weather hunker down in the hammock to read a book.
Guests of DEER LAKE WILDERNESS RETREAT are welcome to use the communal barn which oozes with rustic charm. The communal barn apartment is a shared space where you'll find a kitchenette with a stove, microwave, air fryer, coffee maker, tea kettle and all of your cooking essentials. There is also a sitting area and farmhouse table for your use, connecting at the end of the day in the candlelit barn is a magical experience.
Explore the amazing Almaguin Highlands where there is plenty to do all year around. In the winter cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are available at your doorstep and dog sledding is just one hour away. In summer enjoy water sports, biking, hiking, artist galleries, shops, restaurants, ATVing, horseback riding and golfing. DEER LAKE WILDERNESS RETREAT is not directly on the water but with your rental you’ll get a free day pass to access the provincial parks in the area such as Algonquin Park (40 minutes away) and Mikisew. Mikisew is located on Eagle Lake just 10 minutes away. It is a great spot to hike, play frisbee golf and spend time at the lake swimming, relaxing on the beach, fishing, kayaking and canoeing.
DEER LAKE WILDERNESS RETREAT is a 20 minute drive from the town of South River where you’ll find your essential needs including a grocery store, LCBO, craft brewery and pharmacy. The Crystal Caves and its surrounding artisan village just south of town is a spectacular way to spend an afternoon. Sundridge is just 10 minutes down the road with its quaint Main Street featuring several shops and restaurants.
PLEASE NOTE that there definitely is a camping element to glamping, it is an adventure for those who want a bit of an experience. The Stargazer Geodome is entirely off grid, the lights are solar and there are rechargeable lanterns with USB outlets in the back to recharge your phone. There are no plugs and there is no WIFI although cell reception in the area is excellent. The main source of heat in the winter is the woodburning stove and a propane heater, it helps if you know how to build a fire but I can teach you if you don't. The geodome does not have plumbing, the washroom is an outhouse with a composting toilet that is just steps from the front door. Drinking and cooking water is provided in a dispenser and there are two shared hot water showers (one in an outdoor shower house and one in the communal barn apartment) but both are out of commission during the winter months from November until May when the pipes are frozen. In the winter you will have to walk to the geodome from the parking lot which takes about 4-5 minutes, I will provide you with snowshoes and a toboggan to carry your gear to the geodome.
If the geodome is booked or you want a slightly easier glamping experience please check out the Cozy Cabin at DEER LAKE WILDERNESS RETREAT which has hydro, an indoor (composting) toilet, a fridge and electric heat in the winter.
