Absolutely beautiful place, so peaceful and quiet, set back from the road. So comfortable and well equipped, just be prepared for all the stairs of the 5 floors (58 in total, stone and uneven).

Very quirky stay.
Very quirky stay. The stairs are very step and narrow, the door entrances are small meaning you have to bend down to enter. The place has so much character and has all modern cons you would need. Highly recommend to stay, as you will never find anything like this.Good welcome pack.Good for walking with dogs if you walk down past the stream. The only down sides was the cleanliness of the place, knocked a point off for this, as we found mice droppings in kitchen.Paid extra for dogs, but no bowls for them, so please make sure you take some.
This was such a unique property to stay in for our vacation. It was a perfect location to serve as a home base from which we were able to make our daily sight seeing trips. The castle provided such a memorable experience that we will remember it for a very long time. Didn't mind the low doorways or many steep narrow steps. All part of the experience. Would certainly stay here again the next time we are in the country for a visit.

An extraordinary place to stay - we almost couldn’t believe we were able to stay there, rather than just having a guided tour. The tower is genuinely historic and architecturally fascinating but has been refurbished to make it a great place to stay. It was very cold and snowy when we were there (-4C) but with the heaters and the wood burning stove we were very cosy. There are plenty of walks in the area and things to see, especially down the Clyde Walkway (past the alpaca farm) or up to Craignethan Castle. If you pick the right trains you can reach both Edinburgh and Glasgow in just over half an hour from Carluke station - much easier than driving, and there’s a huge car park at the station. The kitchen is well equipped and there are supermarkets a few minutes away in Carluke. If you don’t want to cook the excellent Taal restaurant is a five minute drive away for Indian food. The welcome basket of local produce was a nice surprise. It’s true about the stairs - even as pretty fit people we found the five flights up to the top bedroom quite challenging but you quickly learn to plan and minimise the number of trips (and to duck under the low doorways). Worth it for a genuinely unique experience.

Brilliant and quirky place.
Brilliant and quirky place. Each year we try to find different accommodation to take our grandchildren (12 and17 ) to and this did not disappoint. This quaint historic tower has been beautifully restored. You can get a sense of what it must have been like to live as lord of the manor did centuries ago. The tower is located in beautiful grounds filled with trees a stream in the garden and an orchard which was great for dog walks. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you could need to use to make meals from scratch or microwave. The great hall has good internet (I worked for the week from here with no glitches). Comfy couches and modern tv connectivity. Lots of games to play are provided including table tennis. First floor room hosts a super single room with its own desk and chair in a quirky window nook. The bathroom is modern with lovely hot water. There is also a washing machine and tumble drier perfect as we had some wet days. We loved sleeping in the top of the tower room with amazing views and a fab shower room. The stairs between floors are steep and a little uneven but this added to the overall charm. I have mild arthritis am a little overweight and I managed well although not recommended for anyone with mobility difficulties. The owners left a beautiful welcome pack and the customer service is amazing. It’s a wonderful place and I would definitely go back again.

Well what can I say? I have fallen in love with Hallbar Tower (Braidwood Castle)
After years of seeing ruined tower houses and private ones we were so excited to have found this one to rent. To say that we were excited was an understatement and we weren't dissapointed.
The location is great for exploring the Clyde Valley but the star of the show I'd the Tower, perfectly restored, yes you are going to crack your head on every door frame if you are over 5ft tall and curse, but this does not detract from the absolute delight of staying in the property, and yes the stairs are very steep but you will get used to that, at the end of the day it's a 16th century fortified tower house.
The 'garret' bedroom is a delight and to climb the stairs at night and then to stand on the walkway and stare at the stars before entering the warm cosy bedroom was delightful and the shower in the ensuite was terrific.
As you might have gathered by now, we loved the place, just remember to leave things where you need them as to leave your glasses on the top floor when you are in the kitchen is a pain.
The welcome basket was lovely, the only thing missing would be some milk in the fridge on arrival for a cup of tea on arrival.
Would I stay here again? In a heart beat.....

Great castle - it was such an exciting holiday for us as a family - I was a bit worried about our young one (3yrs old) managing the stairs as they were steep and of course - stone, but he aced them!
My kids loved the adventure of being in a castle and the surroundings were idyllic.
My only suggestion perhaps for improvement is if somehow the crumbling mortar in the kitchen could be controlled as there would be bits of the stone on the cooker etc. so it needed cleaning each time and my children were a bit worried about something dropping into their dinner ha ha! But that's what you get for a building old and with history - so no grumbles at all!

The castle is amazing and a very challenging stay (stair climbing). Don't forget too duck and don’t forget to bring things down from your rooms or you will have a big climb back up to fetch it. We had sore heads and a sore eye but the stay was amazing the castle is perfect.

Spectacular place to stay.
Spectacular place to stay. My 3 kids (13,11 and 9) loved it. Complimentary basket of food and bottle of wine on arrival which was a very nice touch. Stairs are very steep and narrow and watch out for the low doorways but these retain the character of the building.
We used it as a based to explore Edinburgh and Loch Lomond and surrounding areas. I would also recommend the Station Inn and La Piazza as places to eat in the evening for families.

Had a great time! The accommodations were comfortable other than the obvious steep stair climb, which was already mentioned in the literature on line. Would recommend this as adventure in an old medieval tower fortress castle. Was also cool to know my ancestors built this centuries ago.
