About this property

Hillandale Farmhouse circa 1774 - 6 bedrooms, sleeps 12, newly renovated

Welcome to Hillandale! A 6 bedroom, 3 bathroom farmhouse located on 13 acres with a scenic spring-fed pond. A perfect location for family gatherings, large groups attending the many wedding venues nearby, wine tours, bicyclists coming from DC on the W&OD bike trail and more. Originally a 500 acre dairy farm, Hillandale retains the calving barn, smokehouse, spring house and other outbuildings. The original two room stone structure in the center of the house dates to 1774, with additions added on over time. As such, many rooms have very low ceilings and doorways - so tall folks please watch your head! There is access to Franklin Park, and it's hiking trails, bridal path, ballparks, 18 hole disc golf course, and community pool (land that originally belonged to Hillandale) directly across the street. Downtown Purcellville with its shops, restaurants, craft breweries and distillery is minutes away. Purcellville is also the start point of the W&OD Trail, a bike trail that runs all the way to Washington, DC and is formerly a train line that carried dairy from Hillandale to the White House in the 1930s. The surrounding area is home to many wineries, craft breweries and tourist destinations including the Appalachian Trail and Shenandoah River/Shenandoah National Park.

Accommodations: It will comfortably sleep 12 in beds but there is space for more. On the first floor is a newly updated, well stocked kitchen, laundry facilities, a full bathroom, a large living room with TV and sitting area, an adjacent smaller sitting room with original stone fireplace and 2 porches (one screened). Upstairs there are 4 bedrooms with queen beds, 1 bedroom with a twin trundle bed and 1 bedroom with a full or double bed along with 2 newly renovated full bathrooms (1 with a romantic claw foot tub and separate shower and 1 with a jacuzzi tub). There is also a screened in sleeping porch with two twin beds, weather permitting. Large outdoor space (plenty of room for playing catch/frisbee) with a newly constructed 800 square foot stone patio on the back of the house with a built in propane grill and pizza oven, enough seating for 30+ people and a fire pit. Free wifi throughout. Ample parking in driveway.

About the host

Host profile image
Both originally from Ohio, we met in DC and got married at Tranquility Farm, less than a mile down the road. We fell in love with the area and planned to use this as a weekend place and set up a studio here for Rob, who is a photographer. You can see many of his pieces throughout the house. We unexpectedly had to move to Japan for work for a few years but intend on retiring at Hillandale.

Why they chose this property

We got married down the road from Hillandale and one day after visiting the wedding venue we noticed the property for sale and decided, on a whim, just to take a look. We immediately fell in love with it and decided, on the spot, to buy the farm. We love that it feels remote and peaceful but is just 20 minutes from Leesburg, 30 minutes from Dulles, and a stone's throw from downtown Purcellville. The property was owned by one family for 7 generations and the house feels like it tells that story with its eclectic layout and various cubbies and staircases. We've renovated the bathrooms and kitchen but tried to keep as much of the historic charm as we could.

What makes this property unique

The house combines the modern amenities of renovated bathrooms, kitchen and wifi, with the historic charm of an old Virginia family farm. It is fun to discover many of the original fixtures and details that remain throughout the house. With room to sleep up to 14, it is a great location for a group gathering or weekend trip out to the country - enough space for everyone to be together and relax and not feel on top of each other. The backyard space is perfect for an al fresco dinner and watching the sunset. Hillandale is close to local wineries, breweries and Franklin Park.
