Converted from part of the old Horseshoe Inn, this lovely cottage with modern furnishings makes a delightful base for a relaxing holiday. It boasts a prime location in the desirable village of High Lorton approximately 7 miles from Keswick and just 4½ miles from Cockermouth. The cottage has a spacious living room with cosy wood burner, ideal for relaxing nights in front of a glowing fire. There’s plenty of easy seating and tasteful furnishings along with DVD player and games. It benefits from plenty of natural light thanks to the large windows and French doors that lead to the walled garden.
The kitchen features a beamed ceiling, plenty of cupboard space, a range of appliances and everything you need to make a hearty breakfast before a day of adventure. Upstairs, the landing has a cupboard useful for drying clothes leading to a kingsize bedroom with built-in wardrobes and a vanity unit. The landing also leads to a twin bedroom with a wash basin and wardrobe, and a bathroom. There is an attractive south-facing garden with picnic table, surrounded by a Lakeland stone wall. There is a garden store containing deck chairs, parasol and BBQ and room to store bikes.
Lorton Vale is a beautiful undeveloped part of The Lake District with quiet lanes and scattered farms and hamlets, yet you’re in a prime location for fell walking, climbing, stunning scenery and easy access to nearby tourist hotspots and popular towns such as Keswick and Cockermouth. It begins in an area of rich pastures and leads into the heart of the fells with many famous peaks like Haystacks (Wainwright’s favourite) and the property is located within 6 miles of 5 lakes including Crummock and Buttermere.
Tennis is available in the village, along with a small shop, a church and at Low Lorton, a pub serving a range of local ales, great pub food and a relaxing atmosphere. You can reach the town of Cockermouth in just 12 minutes by car with an abundance of bars, shops, restaurants and independent retailers. You’ll also find antique and craft shops and plenty of small coffee shops and cafés. The tourist magnet of Keswick is only a 7-mile drive over the Whinlatter pass. Keswick’s vibrant centre is popular with outdoor lovers due to its climbing wall and local swimming pool. You can pick up all your walking gear from many specialist retailers.
You also have Derwent Pencil Museum, home to the world’s largest pencil, and Puzzling Place, great for the kids, with mind boggling illusions and attractions. The Theatre by The Lake on the shores of Derwentwater is worth a visit for an evening performance. Whinlatter Forest Centre, is perfect for all ages with cycling trails through the forest, Go-Ape climbing adventure and a children’s play area. There are several walks from the village but take a short drive or bus journey and you can access many of the magnificent fells in this stunning part of the English Lake District.
