About this property

Extraordinary 15th century timber framed cottage in famous Medieval village - The Tryst

Lavenham is England’s best preserved Medieval village with The Tryst one of its oldest homes and a classic example of traditional mid 15th Century timber framed architecture. Grade 1 Listed and retaining many historic features, some from the Elizabethan age, it takes a step back into the ‘Age of Shakespeare’ while providing exceptional comfort enveloped by ancient wooden beams and a massive inglenook fireplace at its heart. With Tudor nooks, wattle & daub walls, wide oak floors, a generous walled Tudor style knot garden, easy access to beautiful countryside, great pubs & restaurants, boutique shops and galleries on the doorstep, The Tryst has all the ingredients for a wonderfully relaxing and distinctly timeless rural getaway.
The Ground Floor
Sitting Room – Large corner sofa, 32” smart TV and upholstered 2 seater sofa arranged around an early 16th century inglenook fireplace with extravagant limestone jambs and a bressummer exhibiting ancient taper marks. Antique wood panels cover the main wall.
Kitchen – Fitted wooden cabinets and works tops with butler’s sink, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, Bose speaker, glorious AGA and farmhouse breakfast table with seating for five. Views over the private garden accessed through the rear lobby.
Dining Room – Oak table with six matching chairs below a gilded framed mirror.
The Indian Room – Single bed with double oak doors that open straight out onto the garden.
Shower Room – Walk-in-shower, lavatory and stone hand basin.
The First Floor
The Gold Room – King-sized bed with elegant bedside lamps and tables, ottoman trunk, wardrobe, chest of drawers and impressive twenty-one arm brass chandelier hanging from high vaulted rafters.
The French Bedroom – King-sized bed with marble toped bedside tables, antique brass lamps, elegant mirrored dressing table and chest of drawers under an historic carved Crown Post. Surrounded with windows on three sides with pretty views over gardens and an ancient villagescape.
Bathroom – Freestanding iron bathtub with brass mixer taps, lavatory and hand basin.
Outside
Wonderfully proportioned private walled knot garden teeming with greenery and flowers and a criss-cross of paths connecting the sun terrace, with large table and seating for four, and the magical vine enveloped metal bower shading a romantic seating area.

The Tryst - A Gem in Historic Lavenham
The Tryst is a gem. This beautifully restored cottage has been thoughtfully and sensitively decorated. It is well stocked with everything you could possibly need and its garden is a beautiful and tranquil place to relax and unwind. The AGA cooker was a particularly wonderful surprise that added to the authenticity and pleasure we had during our stay. Highly recommended.

Great character
We had a great stay over New Year. It was a privilege to stay in such a historic place which was full of character. There were a couple of small things that let it down though. The downstairs shower room was not very clean and in particular the extractor fan which was totally clogged. We were left a small welcome pack which included 3 individual jams which were all partly used and had to be thrown away. We felt that for a weeks stay perhaps more logs, fire lighters and toilet rolls would have been provided. We were of course told to phone with any issues but felt we wouldn’t as it was over new year. The cost of providing these things was minimal and the shops close by but it is these little things that make the stay special. We still had a wonderful time

Christmas break for a family of 6
We had the pleasure of staying at the Tryst over the Christmas break. The house was outstanding and full of festive atmosphere. The history of the house, the decor and the knot garden would definitely mean we would stay again in a heart beat. The surroundings were beautiful, plenty of places to walk our dog, great pubs and local shops, as well as plentiful historical buildings to admire. The only critic would be to highlight that there is only a small fridge with an internal freezer box. As we were a party of six we would have struggled with the xmas lunch food and provisions for the week but luckily our sons came later so we asked them to bring our plug in cool box!! I am sure many who stay go out to eat, but we love to cook.

A Medieval gem
The Tryst is a gem – full of Medieval character but modernised enough to be extremely comfortable. We spent cosy evenings in the Tudor beamed lounge watching Netflix (best of both worlds!) and enjoyed grand dinners in the historic dining room. The location is fantastic, just around the corner from the Guildhall and, even though it was so central, parking was really easy. While we did not use the garden (being October) it looked amazing and I imagine it would be wonderful in the summer.

Holiday in history
The Tryst is an astonishing building, and you're staying in so much medieval history. The cottage is comfortable, and wonderfully situated in Lavenham, which is a great village - make sure you visit the butchers!
