About this property
Remote, traditional stone house, ideal for hiking, biking and relaxing
Rhiw Felen is a beautiful, secluded farmhouse located near the source of the River Mawddach. A large, traditionally built stone house, it combines its 150 year old heritage - some slate floors, wood burners, wooden walls - with all the expected contemporary facilities - 2 fully equipped bathrooms, dishwasher and washing machine, Calor gas Aga.
LOCAL AREA
It sits on the public road for easy access and is surrounded by some of the best walking country in Eryri, as we now call Snowdonia. You walk in to this every time you come out of the front door. The atmosphere inside is more family home than boutique. The house is fully equipped and spacious with a large living room/kitchen and a separate parlour/dining room with a large dining table and benches for up to 12 people, as well as a couch and armchairs for enjoying the wood burner.
HOUSE LAYOUT
There are 3 bedrooms with double beds, a bedroom with bunks and a single bed and a sleeping loft with 2 single beds. Accessible from an outside staircase at the back of the house is a large room with a panoramic view down the valley, suitable for activities - it has a table tennis table - and relaxing/hanging out.
UNPLUGGED TRANQUILITY
There is currently no mobile signal in the valley. The house has a landline payphone but no internet connection - over the years, our guests have told us they value getting away from the everyday and prefer the place without internet access. The cafe at T H Roberts in Dolgellau has free wifi and is a big place where there is always space and is an essential part of a stay at Rhiw Felen for their cakes and Welsh rarebit.
What everyone feels when staying here is the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful spot seeping into them and the pressures and tensions of normal life disappearing.
ACTIVITIES
Of course, there is lots to do for those who prefer a more activity filled holiday - walking, mountain climbing and swimming in the river are all accessible from the house and the Coed y Brenin mountian bike trails are a mile and a half away. The Coed y Brenin visitor centre when you can hire bikes and follow bike and walking trails through the forest is 15 mins drive. A host of attractions and activities locally for children of all ages as well as culture and history seekers are within an hour's drive - The Ffestiniog Railway, Llechwedd Caverns, Torrent Walk, Barmouth beach, Harlech Castle and many more!
SPECIAL QUIRKS
It is important that guests know we do not provide bedding or towels, you have to bring them with you. This is reflected in the price.
NB There are no fences around the fields in the valley so dogs must be under control at all times. The farmer has made it clear that he cannot guarantee the safety of any dog worrying the sheep

An amazing stay. Beautiful walks nearby, an amazing remote location, and everything you could ever want in the house. Amazing to switch off and have no access to WiFi. The host was very friendly and helpful, and dealt with an issue we had very professionally and efficiently. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Thanks so much for the review, Elisabeth, we really appreciate it. We're chuffed that you all enjoyed your stay and took advantage of what the house offers.
The location is absolutely stunning. Beautiful views river to play in and nature for miles. The house is beautiful and spacious. We were a group of 6 adults and 3 kids and there was plenty of space for everyone. Kitchen was well equipped and once we got hang of the stove cooking was easy. It would have been nice to some instructions on how the cooking stove works. We struggled the first night. Second day when we went out , tried to contact the host. He called us to explain how the system works and then it was a breeze. Bathroom were spotless but there were mould on the windows and cobwebs everywhere. Also found rat droppings in the kitchen utensils cupboard. I understand tgat in a remote location it might be an issue but then the cleaning needs to be thorough. Unfortunately that was not the case. We washed everything in the kitchen before use. We also found dead insects in bedrooms and looked like the attic room has not cleaned in a long time. Also the information that guests need yo bring in bed covers, pillow cases and duvet needs to be upfront. We found it only after the booking. Overall great location, beautiful property but needs a lot of cleaning to be of the standard you would want for a decent holiday.

Thank you for your review, Namita, and we're very sorry the proper cleaning standards were not met. This should not have happened and you have been very gracious about it. They were mouse droppings, not rat droppings that you found - we know we don't have rats - but both are unacceptable.
The house was empty for some weeks before your stay which might explain this but does not excuse it.
We will review the instructions for the Aga.
If you would consider renting the house again, we would offer you a 25% discount to recognise that we let you down. Please contact me direct to arrange this.
We know the area very well but hadn’t come across this slice of beauty. We loved the rustic character, lack of signal and WiFi and enjoyed staying in this welcoming cottage. All the bathrooms function well and the aga is a warm bonus. Ned was very helpful too, we will be back!

Many thanks, Caroline, lovely review. You got the Rhiw Felen magic. It’s a special spot.
We look forward to hearing from you!
WHAT a beautiful valley this house is situated in, absolutely gorgeous. And no signal/wifi means proper engagement with our family. The kids loved the games room and outside space, the adults loved the social areas and kitchen (and the purposeful basicness.)It is very remote, with quite a drive to the nearest towns, so be prepared to drive!

Many thanks for this review, Gary, much appreciated. Really good to know you all enjoyed it and you identified all the reasons why we love it as well.
Was an adventure to find the property which was fun in of itself and we all were completely blown away by the views and the property itself was perfect. Brilliantly surprised by the solar room which we didn’t even realise was there until arrival. All round amazing hope to come back again thanks to the host for making everything so easy.

Many thanks for the brilliant review, Joshua, and we're delighted you enjoyed your stay.
We're even more delighted that you want to come back! Looking forward to hearing from you.
I stayed with 8 other guests at Neds house and we all really enjoyed our stay. Every member of the group commented to me what a wonderful short break away they had. The location is wonderful and so there are so many amazing walks as soon as you step outside the front door of the home. Ned was extremely helpful with any questions. Thank you for sharing your house with us Ned, will definitely book again in the near future!

We really appreciate this lovely review, Gina, many thanks and I'm sorry this response is so late! We're delighted you and your friends enjoyed it as we do. You really can unwind there and there's no need to leave the valley to find things to do. I can't remember off hand if it's mentioned in the house description but 2 of the Welsh 2000's are within walking distance - Dduallt and Rhobell Fawr.
Thanks again and it'll be great to hear from you again.
Ned was very helpful before we arrived and made the check in process very easy. This isn't the place to stay if you want modern luxury, but the cottage is very charming and in a beautiful location - we loved having our morning cuppa on the bench outside looking at the hills and sheep. The teenagers survived lack of internet due to the games room, and we enjoyed connecting again as a family. There were 4 adults and 3 teenagers, and we had plenty of space. Thank you, we would like to return in the future

Thank you for this lovely review, Sharon, much appreciated. You got the Rhiw Felen vibe. You definitely go down a gear or 2 there.
And we'd love to rent to you again.
Great place to get away from the rat race for a while, the house has a real charm and it’s nice that Ned share’s his family retreat with others, at a very reasonable price compared to other holiday lets! The house is in an amazing location that certainly grows on you over your holiday. Just don’t expect any phone signal, tv ect. There’s lot of games and exploring to keep everyone occupied tho.

Thanks for this review, John. You've captured the Rhiwfelen experience!
It's a pleasure for us to know that other people appreciate what is a special place for us
Well)) location of the house was amazing! Compleatly remote. Away from everyone, no neighbours around. That’s what we were looking for. The property it self is very old but clean. Rooms nice size. Kitchen fully equipped with anything you need. There’s a play room with darts and ping pong table, nice to spend time during the evenings and kids loved it.
Would be definitely coming back

Many thanks for this lovely review, Valerija, and we're delighted you enjoyed your stay. The remoteness isn't for everyone but we're glad it suited you.
It will be a treat to hear from you next year.
There are a lot more positives to write about than negatives. We were extremely lucky with the weather - I don’t think it would have been the same in the rain!
Spacious house (6 adults and 3 children), and amazing outside space. The children paddled in the stream/river below and the views are breathtaking. A little hard to find initially, despite the detailed instructions from Ned!
The wood burners worked really well in the colder evenings. Shower (downstairs) amazing and nicely refurbished.
The children loved the annexe at the side of the house (their play room) and a huge bbq was provided (you’ll need charcoal).
Thank you for providing us with a wonderful base.

Many thanks for the lovely review and we're really pleased you had a good time. It's surprising how much there is to do immediately around the house, for all ages.
If you could let us know how the directions let you down, we can improve them for future guests.
About the host
Hosted by Edward Higgin
We live different lives in different countries but we all love the house and the valley which has given four generations fun and relaxation and a chance to get away from it all. We enjoy maintaining the house and stocking it up with firewood. And we enjoy sharing it!
Why they chose this property
Rhiw Felen offers a large house with all mod cans and plenty of space inside and out in a beautiful, remote valley where you can explore, play or just relax in peace and serenity. It is ideal for large groups of family or friends.
What makes this property unique
There are few places of this size and specification in such remote and unspoilt surroundings, certainly not at this price.
