Awesome location for our short stay in Rockland

The property and location were exactly as described, the room was very pretty and immaculately clean. Cecelia was very responsive to our questions, and made our check-in process very easy, so we could spend more time exploring Rockland. If we're ever up in that part of Maine again, we will certainly want to stay on this property again.

Splendid, just splendid

We totally enjoyed our two night stay here. The space worked well and we appreciated the Keurig. The location is superb, the garden area with the two Adirondack chairs was so enjoyable morning and evening, the hosts are given to hospitality and blessed us above and beyond our expectations.

Fun stay in Rockland

Excellent location. Easy walk to most places in downtown Rockland. Cecelia was a very responsive host. The unit was comfortable and clean. Only comment is that the windows don’t open, so you will need to use the air-con and/or the fan. This is probably a security issue as it is a ground floor unit. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here.

All good

We stayed one night. The property had two important components: clean and comfortable bed. The place was small but not a concern since we spent most of our time at the nearby restaurants, shops and museums. There was a new standalone ac/heater unit so we were able to control the temperature inside the main room.

our points

AC very loud and the bathroom was very cramped - no sink in bathroom so we had to use kitchen sink to brush teeth, wash face etc.

Great Location

The location was ideal. Close to shops and harbor. There are lots of beautiful and interesting places to visit near by. The apartment is in an old house which is vacant except for the one room. The bedroom was lovely and well appointed. The kitchen bathroom combination is a little iffy. The toilet and shower are divided by a curtain from the kitchen. Washing hands, brushing teeth etc. must be done in the kitchen sink which made me a uncomfortable. Cecelia was a great host.

Close to all you could want!

This was our first time using VRBO. We had a wonderful time! We stayed for four or five nights, found a wonderful bakery only one block away, got great recommendations for the best lobster meal in the area, and had a very restful time in the quiet neighborhood. The owners and hostess were very responsive and offered to help with anything we needed. We called it our home away from home, and would love to come back. We took a half day kayaking trip to various islands, and the weather was just absolutely perfect. There is so much to do, and we had so little time. We would recommend this place to stay to anyone. 😊

The location cannot be beat! A block to the main drag, but still quiet despite its proximity. The space was just as described. I mentioned we were having a belated anniversary, and there was an anniversary card waiting for us, which was so sweet and above and beyond. The space was comfortable and we really appreciated the available coffee supplies and cold bottled water in the refrigerator. The other reviews about the bathroom/curtain/kitchen set up is something people should take into consideration. You are right there. That said, there are French doors that can be closed from that space to the bedroom for privacy, but I wouldn’t want food out while going to the bathroom with that little of a barrier. I know the issue for the host is the historical nature of the building, but if possible, I think even a little pocket door would work wonders. As for the feedback about the shower, I don’t think it was nearly as small as other people made it out to be. We aren’t small people and it was perfectly sufficient. We would definitely come stay again!

Highway 1 trip through Maine

We a great stay here. The bed was super comfy. The kitchen had every thing except a hob. It had a large fridge, microwave, toaster & Coffee maker. The room was a good size. The house was old and nice. Parking was off the road. Cecelia was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The location was great. It was 2 minutes walk to the Main Street with restaurants, taverns, bars, bakery and museum’s.

About the host

I've been an owner of Captain Hugo's Guest House since 2002. The history of both the house and the town has always held a fascination for me and I love to give travelers the opportunity see it for themselves. Rockland is a wonderful town, rich in history and art and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Why they chose this property

The location and the quaint feel of the guest room. Oh, and Edward Hopper stayed here in 1926. See unique benefits below.
Low key, no pressure stay. Let yourselves in and out, private entrance and bath. No contact, but if you see me in the yard weeding, I'll say hello and ask if you need anything.

What makes this property unique

For those travelers who have an interest in art, Edward Hopper used the living room (circa 1926) as subject matter in a painting titled 'Mrs. Achorns Parlor' which now belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The living room in the painting is now the guest suite. He apparently had a fascination with New England boarding houses and stayed here with Mrs. Achorn who was the owner at the time and rented out rooms.
