About this property

Secluded Coast Retreat with Ocean-View Hot Tub & Stargazing

Wild Coast Lookout sits perched on the shoulder of an ancient sea stack, offering exceptional privacy and sweeping views of the Oregon coast. From this dramatic vantage point, hawks and owls are often seen gliding through the trees that surround the property. In the evening, soak in the hot tub while listening to the rhythmic sound of ocean waves, and on clear nights the dark coastal skies reveal a spectacular canopy of stars overhead.

The Lookout is just a few minutes' walk from Turtle Rock Beach and a quick drive to some of the Pacific Northwest’s most spectacular beachcombing shores. Despite its secluded feel, the home is conveniently located just five minutes from the town of Gold Beach, where you’ll find great restaurants, groceries, and other services.

The forested hillside provides a quiet and peaceful setting. The nearest neighbor is a small cottage you pass near the end of the driveway, but great care has been taken to ensure privacy throughout the property. From the deck and lawn, the land opens westward to dramatic coastal views. Wildlife is a regular part of the experience here—deer, raccoons, hawks, owls, quail, and hummingbirds are frequently seen on the property. On most nights you’ll fall asleep to the sound of the surf and a chorus of frogs rising from the estuary and pastures below.

Guests have exclusive access to the entire one-acre property, including a large ocean-view hot tub, outdoor shower, sun deck, lawn, and terraced garden. Inside the home, all spaces are available for guest use except for one small storage closet where cleaning supplies are kept.

The owners of Wild Coast Lookout live in Alaska for much of the year, but our local team lives nearby to assist if needed. Please feel free to reach out to me, Alison, by call or text anytime during your stay. My number is listed in the Wild Coast Welcome Manual. I will also connect with you shortly before your arrival to introduce myself and ensure you have all the information you need for a smooth check-in.

While most guests love the Lookout’s secluded and dramatic setting, it may not be suitable for families with young children (approximately ages 2–8). Access to the sleeping loft is via ladder-style steps, and there are steep, unfenced downhill slopes on three sides of the property.

About the host

We are Alison & John Dunlap, residents of Sitka, Alaska. We're glad to welcome you to our little home away from home.

We continue to live in Alaska, working spring through fall running wildlife sightseeing and photography cruises. And now it turns out – as all our children and their spouses have returned to Sitka to raise their families - we still are only able to be in this beautiful place for a few months each winter. We still have not seen our little place in the summer! We deeply appreciate and have enjoyed having guests here at Wild Coast Lookout and hope you enjoy our vision of this place that will still, one day be our home.

Why they chose this property

In the winter of 2009, on a road trip from San Francisco to Seattle, we fell in love with this beautiful stretch of the Oregon coast. We just could not stop thinking about the beauty of it, and the following winter, we gathered all the savings we could muster, and returned to find a spot that might one day become our home. That search led us to discover this piece of property – then, a small electrical shop perched on the edge of an ancient sea stack, with a fine view of the coast and river below.

What makes this property unique

Wild Coast Lookout is a labor of love, shaped over many years through winter trips and careful planning. Each year, we add a little at a time—working on one area at a time, creating artistic touches both inside and out, and gradually converting the existing carport into the bedroom and bathroom. Our goal has always been to craft a private, welcoming retreat filled with sunshine and personality. As travelers ourselves, we know the little things that make a stay special, and we’ve incorporated thoughtful details throughout our property.
