About this property

Pet Friendly Mountain Home on a Private Pond

Close to the Smoky Mountains National Park, Cherokee, and Bryson City. Great views of Fall foliage, and many hiking trails. The house (and our adjacent cabin, which we will also rent for an extra charge) is a couple of miles from the nearest blacktop road, on a private mountain with just a few other houses, none of them in sight. We're nestled in our own little valley with our own lake (or pond, if you insist) and a view of trees and mountain tops to take your breath away.

We see lots of wildlife including chipmunks, rabbits, squirrels - a family of flying squirrels visits our deck every evening, to take seed from the bird feeder, - bears, deer, coyotes, turkeys, possums, and raccoons. Our neighbors say they recently saw an elk.

The price listed is for the house only. Please send an inquiry if you also want to rent the cabin. We don't rent only the cabin.

Reservations are available year round, with a minimum three night rental. The house sleeps 4 comfortably: 2 people in the king-size bed in the master bedroom and two more on the queen-size sofa bed in the living room. (The cabin also sleeps 2 in a queen-size bed in the bedroom. It has a bedroom, living room kitchen, and bathroom.)

All towels and bed linens are provided. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots and pans, etc. Just bring your food.

Bill said: "It's a beautiful get-a-way in the mountains. We loved the drive up the mountain. It was SO quiet. The house has everything in it we needed. We especially loved the big windows everywhere. It almost felt like we were outside. Loved it. It was just what we needed."

Josh wrote: "Harry place was amazing. Everything was clean and the place was well-stocked with everything we needed to cook. It was very secluded and beautiful; .. The place was within very close proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains NP, which was fantastic, since we spent most of our time hiking there. We would definitely come stay at Harry’s place again!"

Greg (3 visits): "My family had an awesome vacation here. Pictures do not do it justice. My wife described it as staying in a treehouse. Harry's house had more than what we needed or expected. If you are looking for a mountain home to stay in, this is it. Super quiet! Close proximity to any adventure you care to take. Do yourself a favor and enjoy the NC mountains here!"

The house is about two miles up a steep, private, unpaved road on the mountain. Our neighbors further up the mountain have a minivan and a VW Beetle, so you don't need 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive but, if you have it, use it. There are about eleven other homes on the mountain, although none are visible from the house. You will pass some of them on the way. It's very private and it's about 10 miles to the nearest grocery store, so make sure you bring everything you think you will need.

We are adjacent to a part of the Qualla Boundary, the reservation for the Eastern Band of the Cherokee. If you drive to Bryson City (10 miles) on Old Bryson City Road (not the highway) you will pass through the reservation.

The nearby town of Whittier (5 miles) has a Post Office, a hardware store with a few groceries, and a number of churches. The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad passes through the town.

We are about 15 miles away from Cherokee, where there is a large Casino, but much closer to beautiful public areas of countryside with waterfalls, walking, canoeing and kayaking, tubing, fishing, and other enjoyable outdoor activities.

We celebrated our 5th Wedding Anniversary. It was very relaxing with such beautiful birds. Quiet, settings. A lot of nice thoughts by Property Owners.

A slice of heaven
We can't say enough good things about our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the remoteness of the house and felt like we were in our own little slice of heaven on earth. Our dogs really loved it and the walks down to the lake every day. They didn't want to get in the car when it was time to leave. The house was perfectly clean and everything you possibly needed was available as if you were back at home. The owners are very accessible and responded promptly to our texts. We loved it so much that we have already booked our next stay here in the fall. Thanks for providing such a wonderful place to stay.

Absolute perfection
This home was the best mountain vacay rental we’ve ever stayed at. Pros (no cons): the owners communicate everything you need to know to make your arrival as seamless as possible, from advice about the drive up the mountain, to instructions on the various (and very effective) heating elements. They take a ton of pride in their home/property and it shows. And they take their role as VRBO hosts seriously. The home was spotless- I felt more comfortable and at home there than any other rental. Every amenity you could ever need in a pinch was available including basic food items and all things dog related. Firepit/wood, grill, 2 car garage to unload out of the elements. We mostly didn’t have cell service just at the house, but that’s expected and had no impact on our comfort since the WiFi worked flawlessly. Comfortable living room furniture with cable TV and Netflix. We hooked our laptop up to the TV to watch stuff from other streaming services. The 8ish min. drive up/down the mountain shouldn’t be a deterrant. Intimidating the first time (esp. at night), but you get comfortable with it fast and the road is in perfect condition. We did it with and w/o 4WD. It feels like you have the mountain to yourselves, but the light from nearby homes shining through the trees at night remind you that you’re not alone and help is close should you ever need it. The view was stunningly serene. The house is all windows so you’re always reminded of the beauty surrounding you. It’s perfection!

Clean and comfy
Loved this property, unfortunately we weren't able to enjoy all of it since we were gone all day each day we were there. But the home was very clean and comfortable. The drive up was a little hairy, but definitely doable, as the owners stated, as long as you take your time. Would stay again.

About the host

I have homes in three locations. I'm currently teaching at a college in Florida and, during the long vacations, I fly down to Panama to work on my house there. Most weekends, I go to North Carolina to work on fixing up an old farmhouse on the edge of the Pisgah National Forest. The house in the Smoky Mountains is where I go to relax when I don't want to work on my other projects.

Why they chose this property

I wasn't planning to buy a place in the mountains until I was introduced to the previous owners by a mutual friend. They had just decided to move for health reasons and I couldn't turn down the opportunity to own such a beautiful place

What makes this property unique

Privacy, climate, and it's in one of the most attractive parts of the country.
