About this property
'As happy as God in France' at La Chartreuse du Maine, unique estate in Dordogne
LA CHARTREUSE DU MAINE: La Maison de Marc is one of the three independent luxury gites located in the outbuildings of La Chartreuse du Maine, an early 18th century delightful Manor. Here everything breathes Peace, Harmony and Beauty. The estate of La Chartreuse du Maine encompasses 27 hectares (63 acres) of gardens, meadows and woods with many pathways, on the edge of the peaceful village of Cubjac. Within Le Maine you will enjoy relaxing in a lounge chair by the sunny swimming pool that overlooks the estate. Located in the centre of the Dordogne region, La Chartreuse du Maine is the perfect relaxing base to experience France, get to know the Dordogne, go in search of 350,000 years of history of mankind, discover local gastronomy and wines, and be “happy like God in France” in a peaceful, bucolic atmosphere.
LA MAISON DE MARC : This 2 bedroom stylish cottage, La Maison de Marc, is the detached farmhouse of La Chartreuse du Maine. This south-facing house has recently been restored to a high standard, preserving most of the original features. Tastefully furnished, this cottage includes a living room, a kitchen-dining room and a bathroom. All the ground floor rooms open onto a private flower garden and woods. Outside, on the terrace there is outdoor dining furniture and a BBQ for delightful meals under the old oak tree. Everything inside the farmhouse and outside in the estate: terraces, gardens, vegetable garden, speaks of a French ‘art de vivre’ in the bygone days.
THE VILLAGE OF CUBJAC: The shady tree-lined entrance to La Chartreuse du Maine is on the outskirts of the village of Cubjac, which is in the Dordogne region on the banks of the peaceful Auvezere River. You can easily walk to the village center for a drink at a café or to do your shopping at the local bakery and general store. There is even a farmers’ market on Fridays with fresh local produce all year round, and hand-made regional crafts for sale in summer.
THE REGION AND 'PÉRIGORDINE LIFESTYLE: It is not pure coincidence that man has been living in this paradise for over 350 000 years. When strolling alone in the superb unspoilt countryside you can just imagine why. Often, mostly in low season, you might catch yourself thinking the Dordogne has not changed at all. The joy of holidays in Dordogne is that nowadays you still can fully indulge in that ‘simple art de vivre’ which all these cultural and historical sites speak of. The Dordogne is synonymous with gastronomy and life in Perigord revolves around markets, recipes, seasons of mushrooms, truffles, foie gras, walnuts, goat cheese, strawberries, wine harvest. Everybody here has a kitchen garden to grow their own preferred vegetable varieties. Every woman has her old secret recipes, a family heritage.

Thank you so much, Keith, for your nice comment on your holidays at La Chartreuse du Maine, and your recommandation. We are happy you enjoyed your stay with us so much.
Meeting you three was lovely, we have much appreciated your company. We hope we will welcome you again in the future !
As beautiful as a fairytale! The stone cottage with turquoise shutters is draped in red ivy. Inside Catherine, our host, decorated exquisitely with a plush velvet sofa in front of the stone fireplace, tasteful art, and pottery chickens tucked into stone nooks and window casings. The beds are dressed in designer fabrics, and a full stone bath house is an absolute luxury. Outside, is a private garden that is surrounded by a stone wall in which is a tiny garden door (also turquoise) that opens to the oak forest. Beautiful! Delightful! Magical!

Lovely farmhouse, perfect for our family of 4
We appreciated the warm welcome from Catherine & Maxence. Providing the cribs and high chairs as well as their "baby proofing" made it very easy for us to settle into a relaxing week. Hopefully we'll be able to return sometime when the children are older & we can fully appreciate the grounds and the swimming pool.
The pictures accurately represent the property. The owners are onsite and provide wonderful customer service along with lots of recommendations for things to see and do in the surrounding area.

The cottage at Le Maine was absolutely breathtaking! Surrounded by forest and flowers each morning was like waking up in a dream. My husband, baby and I enjoyed early morning walks to the village bakery only 10 minutes away, evening swims in the stunning pool and playing in the garden with the chickens. Catherine and Max are amazing hosts and made us feel very welcomed. Highly recommend!!!

Such a beautiful place to stay. Amazing
We stayed for two weeks in the old farm house which has been stunningly renovated. The Chateau has amazing grounds to explore and a wonderful swimming pool. Right on the edge of Cubjac it's is perfectly placed to access all the amazing places in the Dordogne but slightly off the beaten track so more French than a tourist hot spot.A quiet and peaceful place to stay with wonderful hosts. Perfect.

Thank you so much Peter,
For this wonderful five star review. We are very happy you enjoyed all what la Chartreuse du Maine and the Dordogne region have to offer so much. La Chartreuse du Maine benefits from its unique situation in the center of the Dordogne, close to all the attractions, sites, prehistoric caves, castles, gardens, but in a more confidential part of the Perigord.
We enjoyed your company very much and look forward to welcoming you for future "vacances au chateau" soon !

Charming
Just back from a delightful week in this enchanting patch of heaven on earth. Our hosts Catherine and Maxence couldn't have done more to welcome us and ensure our stay was perfect. We didn't move far from the house and village making made full use of the pool and the charming outdoor spaces and found a sense of much needed peace and relaxation. There is something magical about this place. We would like to think Catherine's grandmother would be very happy to see that the La Chartreuse magic lives on. Hope to return one day.

An oasis of calm in a sea of green.
This is a very attractive cottage on the edge of a lovely village. There is much to see and do. Our hosts made us more than welcome. They could not have done more for us and, as a bonus, we were adopted by their lovely cat. It is somewhere visitors come back to regularly, and we can quite see why. We can thoroughly recommend it

Relaxing in Dordogne
Our family just completed a 6 night stay at this beautiful property in the Dordogne region of France. The stay was a perfect blend of relaxation and sight-seeing as it was the tail end of a 15 day trip with 2 toddlers who were more than ready to escape the constant grind of a new hotel each evening. The cottage was cozy and well equipped, with an abundance of french country charm. It was an ideal size for our family of 4. It also had a nice outdoor space to wander, including a nice walking trail that our kids enjoyed multiple mornings. The owners are extremely warm and helpful. They were always available without being intrusive, and even arranged a truffle picking outing for us that we enjoyed immensely. The area itself is incredibly scenic and despite it being the winter season, there was plenty to see. Highlights for us included the Castle Beynac and Sarlat. We travel frequently and found this property to be among our all time favorites and are already hoping to return when the leaves return. We highly recommend the Le Maine property in Cubjac.

gemütliche Unterkunft in ruhiger Umgebung

Last not least: Cathérine und Maxence!

A little piece of paradise!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely property in Cubjac. The house had all the charm and conveniences that you could hope for. The cottage was immaculate, had great appliances, comfortable sofas, and a huge bathtub. The internet service was strong and fast, and cell phone reception was excellent. The private garden with its quiet setting and dappled shade was very peaceful and welcoming. Catherine and Maxence could not do enough for you, and we very much appreciated their warm hospitality and expertise of the region. Their restaurant recommendations and itineraries were especially helpful. All in all, this was a delightful vacation!

Unbedingt empfehlenswert!

Warm, beautiful, and restful escape
We absolutely adored our one week stay at La Maison de Marc, which finished out our 3-week vacation in France. We chose this place based on the glowing reviews, which are 100% correct! Because we were a little road-weary, we spent most of our time in or around the house itself reading, preparing meals, sampling wine and cheese, hiking around the grounds, and sitting by the wood fire in the evenings. Catherine and Max were extremely welcoming and accommodating during our stay, and made some excellent recommendations that helped us have a really enjoyable time.
The cottage is gorgeous, and is easily one of our favorite places we have ever stayed. The pictures really don't convey how warm, cozy, and spacious the cottage is (especially when the wood fire is lit!) The kitchen was also furnished really well for both food preparation and cleanup. One of my favorite parts is that in the backyard, a wooden gate in the stone wall leads directly to the hiking trails in the forest. Fun!
Dordogne is absolutely stunning, and we enjoyed scenic drives and going to several markets. The village of Cubjac is both convenient and lovely, and the boulangerie in the village has wonderful baguettes and pastries. We barely scratched the surface at what all you could explore in this region.
Would recommend this place without question!

About the host
Hosted by Catherine Lambert
Your French English-speaking hosts, Catherine and Maxence: We live permanently on site and are delighted to welcome you to our “Maison de famille” and share with you our passion of this Perigord region which has inspired so many writers, philosophers and artists. We are happy to share our extensive knowledge of the Dordogne region, and love to help with suggestions of best places to visit, scenic roads and itineraries, activities, history of the region, little-known fine restaurants where you can enjoy regional specialities such as magret de canard and foie gras; wineries, farmers' organic markets… to make your stay with us a wonderful Perigourdine experience. However, we are very discreet and respectful to our visitors’ privacy.
Why they chose this property
La Chartreuse du Maine has been our family home for four generations. Catherine's great-grandfather bought it in 1925, even then, to escape the ‘busy town of Limoges’! All our lives, whilst living and working in Paris, we spent most of our holidays in this Perigord we love. Catherine was a photographer and art director in advertising agencies, and Maxence is an artist, painter and illustrator. 20 years ago we decided to leave Paris, restore our great-grandfather’s château and settle in the Dordogne. We wanted to pass a certain 'Art de vivre' on to friends and guests who would appreciate the harmony of an authentic place in this peaceful region of Dordogne.
What makes this property unique
Because of the unique location of La Chartreuse du Maine, in the centre of the Dordogne near Sarlat, Lascaux 4 (Centre International de l'Art pariétal), Périgueux and Brantôme, you will have so much to visit you might feel ‘overloaded’! Maxence is happy to help you with his Magic Map where our best spots and itineraries are highlighted. Anyway, accept the idea that you will never have enough time to see every place of interest, unless you come back every year for decades (that we would love). So, please take it easy, select the sites you’re interested in: visit less, but in more depth. Or take the other option, don’t plan anything, wander aimlessly in this away-from-it-all countryside and let yourself be filled with wonder at every bend in the road. Whatever you choose, make the most of this quiet timeless life: at every moment experience the peace, harmony and beauty which are definitely the real magic of Perigord.
