About the host
Hosted by Darius
White Rock Farm is owned by the Cosenza and Sollohub families and managed on a day-to-day basis by Colleen and Geoff Gore, who live next door. Geoff grew up on the farm when it was owned by his parents. As stewards, these families open the farm for appreciating and understanding the agricultural and natural landscape. The Gores continue to keep a small compliment of livestock in the barn and tend to them daily.
Why they chose this property
White Rock Farm is a landscape in southern Vermont dedicated to a sustainable future. Located in Bennington VT, it was first farmed in the 1840’s. Today its 295 acres remain a working farm for hay, livestock, and maple syrup production. The current owners maintain a vision for expansion on the farm, including sustainable forestry, regenerative farming, and the improvement of host ecosystems. Both farming and new building will strive toward a carbon neutrality based on green energy applications and well insulated construction. An expanding hospitality component at the farm will showcase these various forms of stewardship, combining education with the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.
What makes this property unique
A stay at White Rock Farm centers around a farmhouse with five bedrooms that can sleep up to a dozen guests. The hospitality season spans from May to November. The main rooms of the 180-year-old house are built from old growth white pine and its newer wings are fully modernized. The woodlot, sloping upward to the Green Mountain National Forest boundary, accounts for two thirds of the property. A network of trails crisscrosses the mountainside, leading to the White Rocks overlook, Bald Mountain Trail, and eventually, the Appalachian Trail. In the other direction, the Paradise Trail takes you to Stratton Brook. Each tree of a certain size is indexed by the White Rock Farm’s forester.
