About this property

Stunning Old Rag and Shenandoah Vistas from this Gorgeous, Peaceful Retreat

Relax and spread out in this beautifully-appointed, comfortable, modern home, with three distinct levels. Located at the foot of Old Rag Mountain, in a little known paradise, a gateway to Shenandoah National Park. Four Fields Farm offers panoramic views from the spacious deck and almost every window, with the majesty of Old Rag front and center.

From the vantage point of this charming, rural property, overlook fields, natural meadows, and picturesque farms, you can leave the world behind. Kick back in the lower level family room, read a good book, cook a delicious meal in the well-appointed kitchen, share family time in the first floor great room, or head out to local wineries, breweries, fine dining, farmers markets, hiking in Shenandoah National Park, or visit historical venues.

Easy walks, lawn games, and bike rides on country roads are outdoor options, too. Shenandoah National Park's border is acres away, offering great hikes to graceful waterfalls or challenging peaks, with plenty of bird and wildlife watching all around. Seek further adventures nearby: Skyline Drive, Monticello, Three Blacksmiths. Inn at Little Washington, Luray Caverns, adorable downtown Culpeper, the Sperryville Marketplace, and so much more! You will never want to leave.

The kitchen at Four Fields Farm is spacious and well-equipped. There are plenty of pots and pans, dishes and silverware, as well as knives that are regularly sharpened. There are recycling bins in the laundry room. We strive to provide all the basic items to manage the house.

Main Floor Living Area--Represents the finest in open-floor plan, natural light- filled living, with stunning views of meadows and mountains. This space has the dining room table, leather chair and couch, rocking chair, many lamps, a ceiling fan, a wood stove, and lots of windows, with easy kitchen access. The lower-level living room has a large TV, comfortable couches, and a full bath.

Kitchen--Many of our guests return year after year, and one of their reasons is the large, well-appointed kitchen. Our chef’s kitchen is spacious, well-equipped, and perfect for entertaining or family meals. We provide two drip coffee makers, one French press coffee maker, paper and screen filters, and a coffee grinder. There are many pots, pans, strainers, cutting boards, cutlery (regularly sharpened), two sets of silverware, measuring cups, cooking and serving utensils, pot holders, cloth napkins, kitchen hand towels, small and large plates and bowls, serving platters and bowls, a plug-in countertop grill, crockpot, cookie sheets, blender, toaster, muffin pans, drinking glasses, bourbon glasses, stemmed and non-stemmed wine glasses, placemats, cheese grinder, pet bowls, and beautiful serving dishes. Also provided are many disposables, including two rolls of paper towels, dish and hand soap, dishwasher detergent, glass cleaner, clean sponge, garbage bags, wooden matches, and rags.

For people with disabilities--The main floor is completely ADA compliant. The sidewalk from the parking area is wide concrete with an 8” step onto the main level front porch, served by a portable 6’ ramp. Once inside, the main floor provides access to the kitchen, dining table, main living room, queen bedroom, spacious covered rear deck, and laundry room. The queen bedroom includes a large shower with hand-held wand, comfort height toilet, a handicap accessible sink and lever faucet handles, all with grab bars. All interior doors on the main level are 32” or wider. If there are further special needs, please reach out.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms--The main floor bedroom has a queen bed, LL Bean sheets, closet, nightstands, art by local artists, luggage racks, private access to the porch, comfort height toilet, double sinks, lighted makeup mirror, a fully ADA compliant bathroom.

The bedroom on the upper level has a king bed, chaise lounge, dresser, local art, with en-suite bathroom, two sinks, comfort height toilet, a shower tub combination, pillow closet, a lighted make up mirror.

The lower level has a queen bedroom, with luggage racks, chair, dresser and nightstands. The other room on the lower level includes a trundle bed, including two single beds. A full bathroom serves the lower level.

All bathrooms include clean towels, washcloths, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, extra toilet paper, and makeup removal towels.

Perfect pillow--We provide six to ten pillows for each bed; some fluffy, some flatter. In addition to the pillows provided, the upper-level closet is dedicated to additional types of pillows so you can find your perfect match. The closet also includes extra pillow cases.

Laundry room--We stock laundry detergent, spot remover, fire starters, broom, dust pan, snow shovel (in winter), pest control, vacuum, and recycling center. We recycle aluminum, metal, glass, plastics and paper. The recyclable items are delivered by the host to the Madison County Transfer Station on a regular basis. The recycling containers are always emptied between guests.

Grill—There is a briquette grill. It is always inspected and cleaned between guests. We provide grilling utensils, briquettes, a chimney starter, and wooden matches.

Entertainment--The lower-level family room is great for watching TV or playing games, with direct access to the back yard.

Doggies--Many of our clients return every year because their dogs love the fenced-in backyard. There is also a mowed hiking trail to the Ponds at Four Fields, and other trails are in development. The trail to the Ponds is about a mile out and back. There is plenty of space and privacy for dogs to run and play.

Maintenance--Your host, Doug, was raised on a farm in Oregon, where he learned carpentry, truck, tractor, equipment, and irrigation repair. He built many sections of his own home and shop, builds furniture and cabinets in his woodshop, and helps friends repair their homes. This expertise has proven valuable so that the home at Four Fields Farm is in perfect working condition, with a focus on both preventative and regular maintenance.

Environment--Four Fields Farm is a fully certified Virginia Green Tourism Partner. This certification allows us to highlight our sustainable practices. We promote recycling, use of Safer Choice cleaning products, provide composting for kitchen waste, purchase Water Sense products, foster native plant species, and provide over 15 acres for wildlife habitat. In the coming year, we plan to install solar panels and an electric vehicle charger.

Firepit and Outdoor Options--We provide seasoned oak firewood and six Adirondack chairs for relaxing around the firepit. It has easy access from the main and lower level porches. There is also a charcoal grill, and we provide briquettes, chimney starter, matches and newspaper. The grill is cleaned between every guests, and is in excellent condition.

Hiking and Exploring--If you want to hike, there is a variety of information in the bookcase in the foyer, including USGS topo maps, books, and every trail map published by the Shenandoah National Park in a three-ring binder. We also provide short descriptions on many of the local hiking trails, restaurants, wineries, and breweries.

Proprietor--Doug is a friendly, conscientious, and devoted host. He and his wife Kim purchased Four Fields Farm on St Patrick’s Day in 2020. He brings passion, hard work, and professionalism to this role. With Doug living a mile away and being able to focus on the business full-time, Four Fields Farm is managed professionally and maintained with pride. This is not a parttime or side gig, or a remote job, it is Doug’s full-time job. He is available to answer any questions or immediately address any issues.

After each guest departs and before the next guest, Doug conducts a careful inspection of the home to ensure it is perfect for the next guest.

Doug and his wife are respected and appreciated in the community. They go to extra lengths to support local businesses, including farm markets, restaurants, wineries, breweries, shopkeepers, artists, and regularly sample the local food and drink scene. This allows Doug to provide up-to-date recommendations on local businesses.

Long Weekend

Overall, we enjoyed the house, which was well equipped. The location was beautiful and relaxing. We were unable to take advantage of our chosen hiking trails, due to heavy rains and trail closures. Definitely, a peaceful retreat.

The valley

The home was exactly as it is on the video. Very clean very well kept very well stocked. It had everything you need for cooking grilling, etc. the views were beautiful and what a great neighborhood. Great to walk your dog or just go hiking. We really enjoyed our stay And would definitely recommend how it is completely roomy and plenty of places to hang out. Unfortunately, it rained almost the whole time we were there so we never really got to enjoy the fire pit, but all in all it was a great stay.

Must stay VRBO!

We spent the last week at Four Fields Farm. To say it was a beautiful location is an understatement! I can only imagine when the scenario is in full bloom how amazing it is. To add to that, the home is great, spacious, comfortable has everything you could possibly need and the hosts are the best! We worked while we stayed with 2 pets. Even had a small baby shower (with permission) that was a huge hit with the location and the house. I couldn’t recommend this place and the hosts enough! This is a must stay location! Adding photos to our google review if you want to see more!

Fun for family!

The property was a great way to spend a couple days away in a relaxing and home like setting. We traveled with our family, friends, and dogs. It was an ideal way for us to spend a weekend. We were able to do a little hiking and have a great place to go back to and relax and enjoy each others company. We look forward to doing it again.

Beautiful location

The home was as advertised and very clean, especially for a pet-friendly house. It is set in a beautiful valley with gorgeous views of the mountains in the daytime and loads of stars at night. We found it comfortable and well-appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed to do Thanksgiving dinner, and we enjoyed having everything we needed to enjoy the fire pit and outdoor space, especially the fenced in yard, which was a bonus for our dog. The owner was very responsive, and we would stay here again. Get Outlook for Android

About the host

Hosted by Doug Parsons

Host profile image
Doug is a friendly, conscientious host. He loves living in the mountains and sharing the beauty of Old Rag and Shenandoah National Park with friends and family. He grew up on an Oregon farm, where he raised fruits and vegetables to pay for college. An avid bicyclist, nature enthusiast, woodworker, and hiker, Doug is always willing to offer suggestions for the enjoyment of the natural beauty near Four Fields. A real Mr. Fixit, he keeps this home in tip-top condition. Doug goes extra lengths to support local businesses, including farm markets, local restaurants, wineries, and breweries, and he provides helpful information on the food and drink scene, as well as the best local hikes. Doug recently retired from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where has had a long and rewarding career to advance the safety of chemicals and pesticides. Improving and managing Four Fields is now his primary occupation. The work with EPA has given him a keen understanding of the importance of environmental stewardship and preserving natural environments.

Why they chose this property

Doug and his wife love the Etlan Valley, where they have lived for more than fifteen years in a home they designed and built. Doug recently purchased Four Fields Farm because of its beautiful views of Old Rag and neighboring peaks, as well as the fine qualities of the house and acreage. During retirement, Doug is now focusing on his steadfast management of Four Fields, and loves being able to work close to home. This is an upscale property, and with Doug living nearby, it is maintained with pride and care.

What makes this property unique

The house at Four Fields Farm sits on an elevated site overlooking wildflower-filled pastures, offering dramatic, wide-open views of Old Rag and neighboring ridges. If you want peace and beauty in a gentle, quiet valley, while enjoying all the comforts of a fine home--not too far from all kinds of attractions!--this is the place for you.
