About this property
Modern Cabin on Old Rag -- Dog-Friendly!
Our place is close to the best mountain trails in Shenandoah National Park and numerous wineries. The cabin is great for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets). Depending on the season, you can take advantage of our hot tub or private swimming hole. And regardless of the season, you'll be able to enjoy the nature that surrounds you from our large screened-in porch -- so you can experience all of the fresh air without any of the mosquitoes.
Our cabin is in the shadow of Old Rag Mountain, the most popular hike in Shenandoah National Park. It's a quick drive to the trailhead from our place. We're also a short drive from another fantastic but lesser-known hike: White Oak Canyon. And we're just a three-mile drive from DuCard Vineyards, which makes hyperlocal wines and has great musical entertainment on Saturdays. The nearby local institution, The Little Country Store, in Etlan can hook you up with pizza -- and BBQ if you're there the right day.
There is limited cellular service in this part of the Shenandoah Valley. For those who must remain connected to the outside world, we offer Starlink satellite internet with Youtube TV and other streaming services. We do not have a landline, but you can make phone calls by enabling Wi-Fi calling on your cell phone before your trip. This is a free feature that most modern cell phones offer.
We have Starlink Wi-Fi Internet, with average speeds of 30–200 Mbps ↓ and 10–35 Mbps ↑. It is good enough for streaming and Zoom and other video conferencing, although speeds can be sporadic at times.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

Perfect cabin for a peaceful getaway! We loved the fully stocked kitchen and hot tub under the stars. We hiked White Oak Canyon-Hawksbill-Cedar Run, Old Rag, Mary’s Rock, and Hazel River-Hazel Falls and Caves-Sam’s Ridge.
The cabin was clean and cozy and on five acres with the most beautiful tress and hills and watering hole. Our dogs loved exploring as well. We made a fire (stocked with cut wood) every night and just enjoyed the quiet and tranquility.
This was our 3rd stay at The Roost. A beautiful, well-maintained property, the house is very comfortable and has a fully equipped kitchen. A peaceful, quiet getaway.
Our 2nd time staying here and we loved it just as much as the first time. The cabin is stocked with almost everything you need. Check in was easy, Cabin was very clean! I would most defently recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet and secluded place to be.
The cabin is beautiful and secluded. Loved the screened in porch and sitting in the hot tub at night. The swimming hole on the property is such a nice spot to relax. The location is convenient to many trails and the Shenendoah National Park! Would definitely recommend and go back.
We loved the cabin and the porch ! Perfect getaway to disconnect from everything but nature ❤️ Loved by us and our dog . Already can’t wait to go here again

Thanks again and I’m glad you had such a good stay! Exciting about the critter visitor!
This cabin was absolutely beautiful! You can tell the owners take pride in their space. The area was very quiet and peaceful, and perfect for a getaway! We had one minor issue upon arrival, however the host was incredibly kind and very communicative. Highly recommend!
Secluded but well equipped for some down time, this property was exactly what we were looking for. Yes, it is remote, but there are wineries and historic sites within easy driving distance. Very comfortable stay.
Comfortable bed, high pressure shower, screened in porch and hot tub under the stars. This cabin is outstanding. Loved the little country store down the road, had everything we needed and great sandwiches. Everything was spotless in the cabin and the surroundings were gorgeous. Definitely want to come back.
What's not to love about this cabin and property. Everything was perfect, The porch was amazing to sit and relax after a long hike in the mountains. The place was cozy, we felt right at home from the beginning of our stay, had such a great time we stayed a extra day. The watering hole was also awesome, our dog Zeus loved it. would definitely recommend!

Thanks, Kelly, and we appreciated your quick thinking/phone call about the door code glitch on your additional night's stay. Happy to have you guys back any time.
Our stay was as relaxing as we were hoping it would be! Exploring the property, nearby hikes, sitting on the screened in porch listening to the rain was the vacation we needed. The house is very inviting and homey. Our hound dog loved sitting on the porch watching for activity and our teenager daughter survived with limited internet for the week. owners were easy to reach and quick to respond. Thanks for a great stay!
Very remote and quiet in a gorgeous area with easy access to sites, trails, wineries, and a few unique restaurants. Loved the gurgling stream, and we (with our dog) enjoyed the swimming hole.
The cabin itself has everything you need and is very comfortable. We spent a lot of time on the large screened porch.
Tracy and Keith are friendly and available.
We hope to make it back—This has been one of our favorite Vrbo experiences!
We stayed here for our 17th anniversary, and it was terrific. The place was nice and clean, the kitchen well stocked with cookware and utensils, and the wood stove was great. Since it was January, we didn't take advantage of the swimming hole, but it looks like a fun place. Other than that, we also really appreciated the extra large fire ring and the stocked firewood (more than we could possibly burn during our stay). We will definitely be going back..... maybe in the summer so we can play in the swimming hole.

Amazing Mountain Retreat!
This cabin was phenomenal! It has all of the rustic appeal of a mountain cabin, but was warm and inviting with modern design features, especially the great windows and ergonomic built-ins. We really enjoyed the wood stove and the hot tub as it was a little bit chilly. We cooked all of our meals in the well-stocked kitchen with the charming skylight. We also made time for the local mountain trails and wineries. We hope to come back in warmer weather and use the swimming hole! Keith and Tracy provided us with everything we needed to have an awesome stay!

So glad your enjoyed your stay -- thanks for the great feedback! I'm happy you were able to take advantage of the hiking trails and the proximity to the wineries. Those are some of my favorite things about being out at the cabin. We also hope you can come back when it's warmer -- the woods are a totally different experience depending on the season!
We decided to stay near Shenandoah NP on a whim. We were looking for some place new. WOW!!! Not only did we pick a fantastic destination, but the Ragged Run Roost was the perfect place to stay! It was beautiful…nestled in the outskirts of the NP. We enjoyed everything about the place. We had 2 dogs, and the screened in deck was perfect! No need to worry about them getting loose. I would highly recommend to anyone, and would most definitely stay again!
Love the seclusion. We wanted somewhere quiet & relaxing and this was. Everything was easy to get to so we explored the area Sperryville, Madison, Skyline drive, Shenandoah, Front Royal, Charlottesville and Monticello. Spent the evenings relaxing in the hot tub and reading around the fire pit or screened in porch.
The only reason I gave the cleanliness and check in 4's the cleaners didn't show up before we got there. The owners had someone out there the next morning(even though it was Mother's Day) and everything was taken care of.

Peaceful and Sooo Private!
A few us recently rented this accommodation on the side of Old Rag. Awesome! It was clean and well laid out in a peaceful setting and we really enjoyed the privacy and constant waterfall sound in the background. This place exceeded our expectations. The kitchen is upscale and there was plenty of room for two couples and a kid. We loved hiking all day and coming back to the cabin to make dinner and have a few drinks while sitting on the large screened-in porch. The thing we liked best was the privacy. We were literally in the middle of the woods. Plus we loved the seating area along the creek where we swam in the watering hole one day and just simply relaxed the next. The outdoor firepit was a plus. It really is upscale for being a Cabin. No road noise! Both platform beds were very comfortable and we all slept great. The proximity to the wineries was a plus and the Etlan country store just down the road was very handy - try their BBQ. The hiking opportunities can't be beat. The owners Keith and Tracy made our stay great! We'll be back soon.
The drive up to the property was beautiful with the mountains in the background. We were so surprised and amazed by how lovely the house was (built ins, woodworking). Great rooms with tons of amenities. We really appreciated the seasonings, coffee, and condiments left for us in the kitchen. There was shower stuff in both bathrooms. Laundry detergent in the laundry room. Toys for the kids. There was so much attention to detail from the owners. The kids especially enjoyed the baseball, footballs and soccer balls. We spent Friday playing sports out on the grass and exploring the area. We crossed over to the stream and walked upstream and downstream with the stones on our feet. The water was cold! The kids really got a kick out of it, just playing in the water. We did not get in the swimming hole. We enjoyed the use of the grill and having dinner on the screened porch. We were able to spend a brief time in the hot tub because of the kids. The screened porch was great to sit and read in the morning and night with no worries of the bugs. It really got dark, so your secluded to enjoy nature. We woke up to enjoy a cup of coffee on the porch. We drove a short distance (20 min) to White Canyon Falls. This is a great hike with views of the creek and the falls at the end. After the hike we came back to enjoy the house and stream again. My husband and kids and I did not want to leave. We should have added an extra night. Next time we'll be back. Your property is so beautiful and well taken care of!! Thank you for sharing it with us.

So glad you enjoyed the water on the property and were able to visit nearby Whiteoak Canyon Falls -- it's a treasure of Shenandoah National Park. The sports toys are brand new and I'm happy your family had fun with them in the yard. That's just what we'd hoped for! We're adding a hammock out there, so there will be even more places to relax if you return -- we'd love to have you.
We had an absolute wonderful time during our stay. The house is great, clean, and comfortable. The screened in porch was fantastic. The kitchen was stocked with everything one might need, except food, of course. The bed was comfortable. The hot tub was great. Communication was excellent. Check-in/out was a breeze. Great location, It was quiet, with the only sound coming from the birds and Ragged Run. Very peaceful. The sandwiches from the little country store nearby was fantastic. We will definitely be back.
This property is amazing. With a huge fire pit that wasn’t in the photos and so many different forest trails to choose from, it was much much more than we expected. The cabin was clean and filled with up to date appliances while the screened in porch was just awesome.
The owners were very friendly and responsive plus clearly care a great deal for the property. We couldn’t recommend this place more!
This is the second time we have chosen to stay at this cabin and we absolutely love it here. Everything from the house, to the fire pit, to the little creek across the way was great. It was close to family for us, the kitchen was fully stocked, the beds were super comfortable, and the place is nice and clean. Our only hiccup was we lost internet service 3 days into our week stay, and we were pretty much off the grid for the rest of the trip. We had to come down from the mountain when we needed to make a call, send a text or email. Not much the owners could do. But other than that, the place was perfect!
We had an outstanding stay at the cabin. The location is remote and very quiet. Access to Shenandoah National Park is excellent. The kitchen and sleeping arrangements are great. We relaxed in the hot tub after our hikes. The swimming hole was a refreshing treat on a warm July day. Communication was prompt and excellent.
Extremely easy to rent this property and it exceeded the online listing. We loved the remoteness of the property and the beautiful grounds. We would definitely consider a return trip!
We loved the house, it's beautiful location and everything else about this stay. Comfortable house, well equipped kitchen and very responsive hosts!

About the host
Hosted by Tracy Dahl
My husband and I are avid trail runners who love running up and down the mountains of Virginia (and wherever we travel).
Why they chose this property
We fell hard for this cabin property after our friends purchased it and hosted many a post-run feast. We were delighted to be able to buy the cabin from them and are excited to continue making memories on Old Rag with our friends and young son. We're sharing the property with you in the hope that you'll create unforgettable memories of Shenandoah during your stay, too!
