Beachfront home in Rodanthe, NC. 5 bedrooms (all masters), 5 full and 2 half baths. Sleeps 10-12. Pet friendly, Game Room. Theatre Room, Elevator to top level kitchen. 6 decks, 3 on the ocean side and 3 on Pamlico Sound Side. Watch the sunrise and sunset each day. Almost every morning you will see dolphins swimming and feeding so bring your binoculars. Private pool and spa. Optional Pool heat at additional cost, $500/wk. High speed Internet is provided along with basic cable and ROKU devices for each of the 7 TVs. Home is handicap friendly but the driveway, being that it's on the beachfront, tends to get sandy. We have a couple of portable 1ft x 3ft platforms to assist guests who may have trouble walking in the sand. A 4x4 vehicle recommended particularly after a strong wind event.

Oh and an added note.... we love fur babies so the puppy dogs are welcome with us! We typically limit to 3 but I have a difficult time saying no to a few more :) we just ask that you bring your own extra blankets to put on beds and furniture.

We had such a great time at this beautiful home! So many amazing ocean views and nice rooms. The sand is everywhere as to be expected being right on the beach, just sweep during your stay and it’s not a big deal. Our kiddos and pups have a blast! The owner was very nice and had great communication before and during our stay. We will definitely be planning another trip.

Our family had a fabulous time at Jay’s rental. We enjoyed our family time together and all the space this house had to offer! The elevator was a life saver. The fishing was great and morning coffee on the decks was relaxing. Off season in OBX is the best!

Thank you for your review Rich and compliments. To address your comments; My lot is 1/4 acre which limits parking to 4 vehicles lined up tail to tail. We have sand removed from the driveway a few times each year. There's another area for parking on the street with room for 2 additional vehicles so a total of 6 vehicles. The parking setup at my home is fixed in place and cannot be changed. The lower level entrance is an unconditioned space. There's no ac there. We have improved the appeal of this entry space over the years buy adding sheetrock, lighting, LVT flooring, paint and stairway kickplates. The deck boards you refer to as loose are on the ground level pool deck. In a salt environment, the deck board nail heads eventually rust away and with pressure from sand directly underneath it will cause the boards to pop up on occasion. All deck repairs we do are done with stainless screws now. If you had contacted me during your stay I could have remedied this minor maintenance issue.

We loved our week at Outer Banks. Our extended family traveled together- ages 8 to 80. It was perfect! The beach was beautiful and felt private, as there were rarely more than 5 other families nearby. The swimming pool gave a great alternative to the waves for the kids and the hot tub was an amazing way to relax in the evenings! Had everything we needed in the kitchen and the elevator made the whole house accessible to my elderly parents. Internet signal wasn't strong, but it allowed us to disconnect from work more easily - which is a good thing on vacation! Cell reception was fine so we connected as hotspots when required. Jay was extremely receptive and available when issues arose (we had one pool concern due to blowing sands, but he managed it immediately). Highly recommended! You won't regret it!

Wonderful location

Location of house is fantastic. Only a few steps to the beach. Management responded to texts and issues quickly. We loved the town and relaxing atmosphere. House needs some serious deep cleaning and quite a few repairs. Rusted refrigerator and sink dumped at the corner of the house when going to the beach. For the price, expected the house to be in better condition.

Did not want to leave!

Our second time staying at this property, and loved it both times! House is right at the water's edge, so it's almost like being on a giant houseboat, seeing surfers go by your kitchen window! Loved watching the sunrises from the comfort of our bed, and the sunsets from the back deck. Host Jay is super responsive and communicative. House had a few minor maintenance issues, but was in great shape overall, especially considering its proximity to the ocean, and the hostile environment from the salt spray that goes along with that.

Perfect family vacation spot!

We have vacationed in the Outer Banks for many years and this was by far the best house we have stayed in! 10/10 cleanliness. We had four generations with us - from 80 years old to 2 years old - and the house accommodated us all perfectly! The elevator was extremely convenient for the ones who needed it and for carrying groceries/luggage to the upper levels. The host was very helpful and informative prior to check in and because of that we had no issues with the elevator. The pool was great and the heater was definitely worth the extra charge. The kitchen was very well stocked and multiple dishwashers and 2 refrigerators (including the second floor) was very handy with a large family. The views from the house and balconies are breathtaking and you can’t beat the location of being right on the beach!Thank you for hosting us Jay! We hope we get to book your house again. :)

Always fun with family!!

This house is right on the sand! Has plenty of room and bathrooms for everyone! Has pretty much everything you need - even a nice high chair and crib! I do wish the pool heat was working - it is one of the reasons I booked it! My dad had to clean out the AC window unit in our room plus he had to clean out the dryer vent because the dryer would not dry our clothes. Also, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is required- there is so much sand in the driveway. We all loved looking at all the books - they were very entertaining! All in all, we had a great time and loved being right on the beach!

Thanks for your review Cathy. The pool heater guy I've been using for years retired and I'm actively looking for a replacement without much luck. I've never had a request for pool heat in mid-summer btw. The washer / dryer unit is 4 months old and given the almost constant use the lint builds up blocking the warm air from exiting thus keeping the clothes from drying. The downstairs central ac unit is being replaced and the replacement is currently being coated with a special sea spray. It will be installed soon. Window units are there as a suppliment and temporary cooling source in the interim. Driveway gets sand built up from time to time, that's normal for beachfront. I have it cleaned up every few months. Fyi, I've got a maintenance guy on retainer that will come to the house to remedy the minor things you mention. Glad yall had fun.

House was ok, the lay out is strange- thank goodness for the elevator. Pool: not able to use- temp due to unit issues and lots of sand. The rooms are small, and the upstairs is very small- the downstairs area needs to be cleaned better- level 2 areas I don't think were even touched by the cleaning service. Wonderful location- weather was miserable. Just some little things that need to be addressed but you can't change the size of the living area's. Just not real impressed with all the stairs.

Well we'll well Lora I see the weather has your feathers ruffled! My home is very near 3200 Sq ft. and thus, due to beachfront status, has a value of at or near $1m. It's not possible to change the room sizes without major construction! If you had told me about the cleaning issue I could have addressed it but I never heard a word from you. You also never indicated anything about the pool heater that turned off midweek due to a tripped breaker from the thunderstorms! The elevator is there for convenience and quite frankly Lora you're the first guest who has ever complained about my stairs. What should I do remove the stairs and violate every fire code in the State of NC? I will activately have this review removed by my lawfirm!

Nice house and location

My family enjoyed our week. The weather didnt cooperate, but thats no ones fault. House clean, beds comfortable. On the beach, close to water. Kitchen equipped. Couldnt find a toaster. Two dishwashers in the main kitchen was a great feature! A few suggestions. Pool area needs some shade. An umbrella, an awning, something. Also, there are NO rails or ladders to get in and out of the pool. We had a disabled family member and no rails or ladder to assist getting in or out was an obstacle. The top floor balcony facing the ocean could use an awning also for shade. The elevator needs improvement as we were told to only use it sparingly. We were told It shuts down when used alot. Again, with a disabled family member was a bit intimidating for desired use.The wind was so strong it blew a lot of sand in the pool. Other than those suggestions we did enjoy our stay. Very nice home, with just about everything you need. We did see dolphins in the morning :)

Response from VrboOwner on 2 Aug 2024
I'm glad you and your family enjoyed your stay Woody. Allow me to address your concerns. There is a specific reason why I do not provide umbrellas and that's the strong wind. It's a liability for me as they can become projectiles. You even mention strong winds in your review. Awnings wouldn't last long as the wind would destroy them. You may have noticed that none of the neighbors had awnings either. Elevator; I was coming back from vacation myself from overseas the day you checked in and had someone fill in for me as host not knowing if I'd have phone access or not. I gave specific instructions to my substitute host about what to relay to guest about the elevator. The word 'sparingly' isn't in my instructions. The elevator works fine and can be run as much as my guests need to use it. It does, however, need to be operated a certain way and I simply educate my guests prior to each check-in on how to operate it properly. It's not defective and will only shut down when used improperly. I used to have a grab rail on the pool steps years ago and it would repeatedly break at the anchor point in what seemed annually. Quite frankly I got tired of trying to make it work as it seemed more of a headache than a benefit. Grab rails anchored in a molded pool aren't as strong as those anchored in a concrete pool. My pool is a molded one. As for a pool ladder...again, ladders would be stronger in a concrete poured pool. A ladder mounted in my pool would not hold up.

What's not to love...

This was our first trip to Rodanthe and we are so glad we found this house for our stay. We are a large group of framily (friends & family) and pets that travel every year and this house was the best one we found in our 7 years. There was enough room for 6 adults, 4 kids and several dogs to gather comfortably for dinner and play but also to retreat privately whenever we wanted. The private decks and bedrooms are large and well decorated. The elevator came in handy when arriving and leaving but I preferred the steps to offset the lazy days on the beach. It was really nice to have 2 dishwashers in the main kitchen and the extra fridge in the lower level made for a perfect beverage hub. We lucked out and had no rain but there was plenty of room to still have an amazing vacation if we spent time inside. We took the kids to the Wright brothers memorial one day and another couple took a day and went to Ocracoke. The location is very central to exploration if you like day trips in addition to beach days. The kids enjoyed the pool and the bonus game rooms and walking to the pier for ice cream. Paul and Jay were very responsive and I feel like we even made a new friend in Paul who manages the property and lives close by. (His dogs even have great personalities) I would return to this house in a heartbeat and hope we get the chance to visit again. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Location is on point!

The location of this house is key! Its walking distance (like .5 mile down the road) to a pizza place, coffee bar and a surf shop. Beach area is clean and watching the surfers and sunrises/sunsets from the balcony was so cool! The pool and hot tub were great and used every day by the kids and adults. The only "downfall" is the stairs...so many stairs. But that is pretty much the norm for the Outer Banks area. Thankfully there is an elevator so the older folks used that most of the time. The rest of the family and kids used the stairs and had no issues with it. After the first day you get used to it. The beds were comfy. There are no black out curtains on any of the window in the bedrooms, so be ready for BRIGHT mornings! Make sure you come with all your own toilet paper, paper towel, kitchen towels, kitchen soap, regular soap, shampoo, etc. - None is provided. There are plenty of markets near the house to get whatever you need and the Dollar General store nearby is amazing - has almost all you will need - including dry foods. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend booking this place. Also, the Rodanthe Pier is a short beach walk away. Go eat at "I got your crabs" in Kitty Hawk for good seafood! It was so good we drove out there twice!

Thanks for your review Tina. I've actually never had a comment about blackout curtains. You're the first in 14 yrs. Look on the bright side. You had sunshine during your stay. Since early April we've had nothing but cold rain, clouds and high winds. With regard to the basic toiletries...it's actually in my contract to have bath tissue in every bathroom, hand soap, a few trash bags, paper towels and dish detergent. The lack of these items has been corrected. Glad yall had fun.

Not quite what was expected

Overall, a good stay. To be fair, we arrived the day after the tropical storm blew through, so lots of sand everywhere. Property owner responded quickly to a clogged toilet and replaced a toaster oven when the other one wouldn’t work. Main microwave was not working, but a counter top microwave was provided. Heater in pool was not working which was disappointing ( managed to use it once, as well as the hot tub which is located in what looks like the garage area). Second floor of house appears to have been under water at some point. Terrible smell (mildew) in media room, foosball room and room with pool table. Very difficult to do much in this area due to smell. We were able to use the handicap accessible bed/bath…smell was not as strong and it worked out beautifully. The elevator was a Godsend as we had one member in a wheelchair. We only got one day at the beach due to the storm, but enjoyed sitting on the decks overlooking the ocean when the wind permitted. When you come, bring your own paper goods ( toilet paper, paper towels, etc.) as these are not provided. Don’t buy groceries at the general store on the way to Avon. We spent $295 for just a few items (think everything there is marked up twice as high as the grocery store (Food Lion in Avon and worth the drive). We got our fill of flounder and other seafood at restaurants on Rodanthe and one place in Avon. Again, overall we enjoyed our stay.

Multi-Generational Family Vacation

We enjoyed our week on the beach at this property. Some of the huge pros included that it's literal steps away from the beach, it has an elevator and accessible bedroom/bathroom for those with mobility issues (a godsend for my 95 year old grandmother), there are ample bedrooms/bathrooms for a multi-generational vacation, and there is a private pool and hot tub. A few of the cons included a pretty chaotic check in process. The check in was at 4, which I confirmed was okay when we were an hour away, but when my family arrived, the cleaning crew was still there because the previous occupants left the property late. While this is not the end of the world, we were told that the cleaners would be done by the 4pm check in so we were thrown off by this change. All this needed was some more open communication so I could make arrangements for my parents, 15 month old, and grandmother. Second, the house could use some TLC. There were exposed wires on the outside of the house, exposed nails on a few of the decks (which was hazardous for our little one), one of the dishwashers was corroded on the inside, and the thermostat was difficult to manage as it was locked and struggled to maintain a level temperature. The final thing that I wanted to mention is that while I absolutely respect anyone's decision of what to put in their home, having an entire bookshelf filled with right-wing conspiracy literature and altering the Roku channels so that it's only easy to find OAN and Newsmax runs a huge risk of leaving a sour taste in some renters' mouths when they arrive. While this didn't permanently impact our stay, it was enough to lead us to decide not to rent here again because we did not feel very welcome in the home.

Tyler, Sorry you came to decision not to stay at our home in the future. Allow me to address your comments. The week before you arrived we had the biggest nor'easter of the year and with that the house shakes and moves quite a bit in almost hurricane force winds. As a result it's normal for decking to move / vibrate and some nails work themselves out a little. Happens to every home on the island. Regarding the exposed wires, there are a few legacy and electrically dead outdoor outlets which corroded years ago from salt spray. I use to replace them but outdoor outlets on the beachfront last 2-3 months so I stopped. There are 3 dishwashers in my home, 2 are new 1 is older. When the older one breaks I'll replace it. Thermostat is set to max min temps for heating and cooling. If you had difficulty with the thermostat I certainly wasn't informed. Additionally I have a maintenance contractor listed in the house manual in which I ask guests to use him if there are any maintenance issues (i.e. nails, dishwasher, thermostat). If you contacted him he never said anything to me. I sent you the entry code for my home before 3pm. I'm not certain what communication from me you were asking for after this. I'm not physically present at my home so I can't speak for my cleaners or their status. I apologize for my cleaning crew not being ready at 4pm. Their job is very difficult and your review was absent of any cleanliness issues which reflects their good work. My cleaners are top notch and for the few times I've known them to be late they have offered late checkout the following week. Lastly, my library is a collection of books I've read over the years. In lieu of Goodwilling them I just put them at the beach. My Roku has numerous apps which I downloaded myself but I've never configured it so other apps are difficult to get to. Thanks for the positive comments you gave.

Roaches, mice droppings, and an unethical owner- BEWARE!!

I can honestly say that we have stayed in the outer banks since I was 8, and I’m 40 now, and I have never been in a house this dirty. We killed over 15 roaches in the first day, and kept killing more each day during the week. I did message the owner, and his only response was, ‘ sorry for your troubles. We get it sprayed every 3 months.’ The owner referred to them as water bugs….these were NOT water bugs. They were German roaches. They were out in the middle of the day, and when we packed to leave, we tried to get make sure none were in our personal belongings, and every single family has had to kill roaches that got in our luggage. My son was sitting at the kitchen table eating lunch, and one crawled up his leg. There was also mice droppings everywhere. The elevator was a constant problem as well. The magnetic strips on the door would come undone when the main door closed, because it’s old and needs replaced, and an error would occur that required the maintenance company come out to reset the system. I have three people that need an elevator, and we didn’t have one the last three days of our stay. Now, almost three weeks after our stay, the owner is requesting we pay additional fees for ‘damages’ we didn’t make, service on the elevator, and had the audacity to message that the maintenance individual isn’t an elevator technician, but knows just enough to get by. That was his wording in the message on VRBO. I’ve since had to get VRBO involved- terrible!

From time to time hosts have to deal with guests like this. This review of my house (and me) came in the next day after they received a bill for the damages. Elevator disabled 3 times in 4 days, broken 75" TV. They are in defense mode and lashing out. Sometimes when hosting you have to consider the source.

Amazing views. The weather was a bit cool but the hot tub was nice and hot. Plenty of room for everyone. My handicap mom loved that it had an elevator. Jay the host was very friendly and informative. It was a great family vacation!

My wife Katthy and I live in a small town in South Carolina along with our young son and German Shepherd. We enjoy our home in the off season as it's become our labor of love. We are also enjoying our new venture of self managing. So much more freedom and an opportunity to interact with our guests.

Why they chose this property

This property is unique in that it is so close to the ocean, 100-300 ft depending on the tide. You can hear the ocean waves crashing while you sleep. You will get a very refreshing soothing sleep in our home. On top of that you have a private pool, private hot tub, you may bring your pets for an additional fee of $200.
There's great fishing right out front or you may walk to the Rodanthe Pier just a few blocks south. Bring your binoculars! The dolphins are swimming out front almost every morning and they're gorgeous!

What makes this property unique

For those guests who have mobility issues the house is equipped with full handicap accessible features, including an elevator to the top floor kitchen, a full handicap room with handicap master bath. The sand in the driveway is sometimes a challenge so we made a couple of 1ft x 3ft platforms made from deck boards which can be used to help mobility impaired guests into our home.
