About the host
Hosted by LOCKIE MARIE HUNTER
I am a southern gal, raised in the mountains of Tennessee. My husband is from Maine, but our family of four now lives in Asheville, North Carolina, tucked in the hills. I am a retired professor of writing and literature at a local college, while my husband is a software guy. Our two teen children love the lake life! They enjoy the stand-up paddles and kayak and boating and tubing so much. My daughter often goes for an early morning paddle to enjoy the serenity of the lake, while my son is more active and enjoys tubing behind the boat.
We love to cook, so we purchased the items that we know we would need in a true chef’s kitchen. Springform pans, zesters, all of the elements that make cooking fun! We also invested in some outdoor dining, because with that gorgeous space, what an opportunity to eat outside. With the lake just steps away, eating outside is a priority! There is something magical about dining alfresco, watching the herons and cranes explore the lake from the deck. We have a bit of a “pet“ crane who comes by on a regular basis. We named him Niles. ;)
We have had large extended family gatherings here, and we have had our personal BookClub here and Lockie’s writing retreats. We enjoy both a house full of teenagers with laughter and running in and out and grabbing beach towels and paddleboards AND a sophisticated girls retreat with farmers market in the morning, vineyards in the afternoon and lots of card playing and stories. We have made so many memories here already.
We are a close-knit family, and both of our moms are in their 80's, so we needed a place with the primary bedroom and en-suite bath on the main floor. My mother cannot navigate steps well, so it is perfect for her to be able to walk right in and sleep in the primary bedroom. The lot is also gently sloping, so from the front of the house she can simply walk down the side of the house and onto the dock and the boat without navigating any stairs.

Why they chose this property
Our daughter was just accepted into UNC Chapel Hill (go heels!) and the Lakehouse is only about 1.5 hours away, so we can go bug her. 😊We love lake living! My husband loves to boat, and I am a water baby, swimming and kayaking and canoeing…anything on the water. We looked at lake homes for years, and we looked at many different lakes, from Georgia to Tennessee. High Rock feels so special! It is the perfect blend of fun and relaxation. The “pace” of the lake it just perfect. The lake is large (the second largest in North Carolina) so there are many places to boat to. You can boat to Goat Island and join the party or boat into a quiet cove and swim and float. You can jet-ski the main channel or take a quiet paddleboard trip into a quiet harbor and search for herons and other wildlife. We also craved luxury. This home is so new! It was built by a builder only 5 years ago to be his personal lake home, so he did not skimp on all the details that make the place feels luxurious. Some of the other lakes we viewed felt overdeveloped and a bit commercial. High Rock strikes that perfect balance of having enough to do, while also not feeling overcrowded. While you will see exciting activity on the weekend, (JetSkis and pontoon boats and motor boats and fishing boats) which lends the weekend an exciting pace, during the week, you will find lovely peaceful lake moments, watching the birds and the occasional boat or fisherman go by. Uptown Lexington and nearby downtown Salisbury are so charming! The shops are unique, and the shopkeepers are friendly, while the farmers market, vineyards and breweries provide a wonderful afternoon. Even storms are magical at the lake. Sitting on the front porch, watching the clouds roll in and then watching the lightning over the lake, truly magical! We love the open floor plan as the chef is not stuck in the kitchen. We added six generous size barstools and with the dining table seating 8, we have plenty of seating!
What makes this property unique
My husband also works often while we’re at the lake. There is an office space right next to the kitchen. He just pulls up a chair and plugs in his computer. The Wi-Fi speed is excellent, and he has been able to take conference calls around the world with ease. On sunny days, he will sit outside and take a conference call while looking at the lake. All of his coworkers are jealous when they see the background. One coworker asked if it was a fake photo backdrop!
The primary bedroom and en-suite bath are on the main floor. The lot is also gently sloping, so from the front of the house guests can simply wall down the side of the house and onto the dock without navigating any stairs. This will be wonderful for a big extended family vacation, if not all the members can navigate a flight of steps. We have hosted girl retreats here with my friends, and the bedroom/bathroom layout is perfect! We truly sleep 10 incredibly comfortably. The Jack-and-Jill bathrooms upstairs are not only gorgeous with granite and custom cabinetry but they are generously sized with two vanities and tons of drawers and cabinet space.
Our house is very well equipped, perfect for a longer stay! The kitchen is a working kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a large granite counter-top, and plenty of pots and pans and cookware and bakeware etc. Looking for a spring- form pan? We have it! lemon zester? yep. Keurig coffee maker... It's all there!
We are tucked into a little piece of paradise in our sweet portion of the lake, but we also have access to the main channel! This gives you access to the boat- up restaurants. One of them is tons of fun and has a party atmosphere with live music on the weekends and the second (Waters Edge Restaurant ) is a bit more subdued, but still has wonderful events throughout the week, from karaoke to wine and paint to live music. We love to boat to one of them, tie-up at the restaurant, have a wonderful meal and then boat back as the sun sets over the lake!
