Guests especially enjoy our seasonal Halloween and Christmas décor, as we love celebrating the holidays here.
Like many historic homes, Bethany’s long history has had a past. Some guests enjoy the home’s haunted reputation and unique atmosphere, while others simply appreciate it as a charming and memorable place to stay—the experience is entirely what you choose to make of it.
Due to the home’s historic design, it may not be suitable for small children or guests with mobility challenges, as original features such as staircases and thresholds may not meet modern accessibility standards.

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay. The location is easy walking distance to downtown Jackson. The house is funky enough to make it fun and interesting but it is still very comfortable and accommodating.
Place was clean. It was one of the most well equipped places I have stayed in. The kitchen had everything! Plenty of space. We were 6 adults and one 9 year old. Good communication from host.
My family and I loved spending Thanksgiving at this beautiful home. So close to the Casino and wineries.
Elsie was a wonderful hostess, very quick to address any questions or concerns.
Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy your big and beautiful home.

I am so glad you all enjoyed it, and what a great weekend to be in town! I hope to have you back to visit in the future!
The perfect place to stay for a summer reading retreat
We have absolutely nothing but love for this haunted humble abode. The house itself is charming and welcoming, the beds are comfortable, and the air conditioning is cool throughout the house. Elsie’s personal touches make the rental feel like a cozy home away from home . The memories we made during our stay will last a lifetime! I can’t recommend this property enough!!
While a little creepy with the tales of ghosts and matching decor the house was very well maintained and extremely clean. Great walking distance to old town Jackson with bars and restaurants. Host was amazing and very communicative. We would stay here again for sure. Thank you!
This house is incredible! I would give it 10 stars if I could. It is beautiful, exceptionally clean, stocked with everything you could ever need, and beautifully spooky! The house is only a block to antique stores and wonderful restaurants! If you ever get the chance you should take a trip to Jackson and stay in the house. I never wanted to leave.

I am so glad you finally got to come up! I love how much you love the house (because I do too). I hope we get to host you again.
We so enjoyed our stay! The house did not disappoint! Not only was it immaculate, it was decorated for Christmas. There were treats in the kitchen, a full hot cocoa bar and all the makings for a delicious cup of cider, tea or coffee. Although there is definitely a spooky ambiance, we did not experience anything out of the ordinary.
10 out 10; would stay again.
Thank you Elsie, you were an amazing host!

I am so glad you enjoyed your stay and I hope you come back soon!
The property is charming and as stated in the listing. the main issue were ants throughout, which should have been sprayed for or notify us that we would need to spray.
Elsie is very responsive to any needs or questions.
Everything that you look for in a historic, antique, (haunted), house - this place has. It is absolutely gorgeous and mystifying, and Elsie made the entire process smooth and seamless. Very attentive to guests and the house, and the property is literally 2 blocks walk away from historic downtown Jackson. The kitchen has absolutely everything you could need, including Keurig, hot cocoa bar, wine glass and bottle openers in addition to a complete set of cookware, dishes and utensils - as well as recommendations for local eateries and places to visit. The library is a wondrous place to relax and wind-down, and the living room has 3 full dresser drawers of board games and party games, some never even opened. This place is a treasure, and we will definitely be back.
I stayed here one night for a quick birthday girls' trip with my sister and our friend. We were so impressed by how beautiful this house is, everything is meticulously put together but it has a cozy, lived in feeling that's perfect for Autumn nights. It was such a treat to stay here during Halloween season and have the cute/spooky decorations up! The kitchen is well stocked, the bathrooms are really nicely recently redone, the beds are extremely comfortable. This was a perfect place to kickback after a day of wine tasting and exploring the charming Jackson main street. Rosebud's cafe was a standout for brunch! My group likes to be in a location that's walkable, so it was great for us that there are quite a few restaurants and a grocery store within a short walk. It was a luxurious space for the three of us, but would definitely be comfortable for a larger group. Elsie is a wonderful host, she's super communicative and readily provides helpful tips for enjoying your stay in the area - the guestbook was especially impressive! We hope to be back!

Hi Mel, Thank you so much for your stay and your kind words. I love it when people adore the house and town as much as I do. I hope we get to welcome you all back in the future (there is so much to do in the area).
We enjoyed some of the great features of the home. the kitchen was well equipped and a great place to gather as a family. The convenience to downtown, especially the Blue Door Bakery was a real highlight.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for staying. I hope you and your family come back to visit us again!
Really, really good experience! Elsie, the property owner, is so so nice and super responsive, which was incredibly helpful when I was bringing my 4 kids to the house on a last-minute snow trip. We had a lot of fun playing the board games with our older kids and had a lovely bonding experience at the house. The place is enormous - the photos don't do it justice. There is a really cool library of books that my kids enjoyed. The kitchen was well-stocked and Elsie left a wonderful basket of snacks, which my kids were super excited to try. (Pop-tarts at 10pm - yay!)

Hi Mary, thank you for being my first guest! I am so happy your whole family enjoyed the house, and made it so easy for me. I promise to hide the clown the next time you stay :)
Hi my name is Elsie, and I love and cherish this home. I have an old name so no wonder I love old houses! I was born and raised (and continue to live in) Sacramento. I LOVE to travel, I have been to 22 countries and 28 states, so I am an experienced traveler and while putting together this space, I really had to think about what I would like when I travel. I hope you appreciate the detail and let me know if there may be things that I missed! I first started going to gold rush towns back in the early 2000s when planning my brother's and then my weddings (my brother was married in Jackson and I was married about 8 miles away) and love the thrift stores and all the Main St small businesses in these towns. 2020 changed so much, and I decided to sell my small single-family rental in Sacramento and bought this house. This is my first short-term rental; it was not the plan to do a short-term rental (originally planned on upstairs being a long-term rental but after the paranormal experiences things changed). I planned on renting out the basement apartment as a short-term rental, so I would have a place to stay when I came to visit. I love the town and all the fun events so my dream was a vacation home for me. After realizing immediately that the house was haunted, we switched to making them both short/mid-term rentals. I currently work in Research at a Children's Hospital and also run a dog rescue (if you see me, you likely will see me with a special needs dog in tow). I continued to keep myself extremely busy throughout the pandemic working on my houses and hope to share my passion and excitement with visitors.
Why they chose this property
I immediately was drawn to this house because the location, I was married nearby and always loved the gold rush towns. But add that the house was in Downtown on Main St., had history, and I just had a vision for a cool vintage place where friends could get together and play board games after having an awesome meal. My great grandfather lived next door to a cemetery, and I always loved historic cemeteries so that added to the charm as well. Honestly, my degrees are in English, and the library really was what sucked me in, and I was compelled to buy this house. I loved shopping and personally picking out every detail of the house, and it took me MONTHS to complete the house (I replaced most of the furniture more than once as I found cool antique pieces), meanwhile I spent weekends in the detached basement apartment and I fell in love with the town, the area, and of course the house. It isn't perfect yet, but I will continue to show it the love it deserves. There is always something else to do, but after a year, I am happy to welcome others to my vision.
What makes this property unique
Is it really haunted? Yes. If you are an empath, you will likely notice it immediately. As someone who works in science, I always have to remind people that The law of conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only converted from one form of energy to another. So, my logical mind has tried to prove them away. We are 2 blocks from the cemetery, on a creek (water is supposed to up energy as well), and possibly once was a brothel, it was a boarding house for many decades and we even have some murders that took place. So it is not really a shock if there are still spirits around. The area has a lot going on, a mining town which started in 1849, where Chinese, Native Americans and other miners suffered great tragedies, I was recently told town was built on a Native burial ground, and we know brothels were open until the 1950s in Jackson. This part of town was also where the Chinese were interred and where the first cemetery was erected (them built on top of) I was not shocked to learn that the spirit in the unfinished basement (sorry you don't have access to it) lived in the house for about 60 years.
We have had the place cleared (but they only go if they want), and sometimes it is more active than other times. Sometimes you might smell cigarette smoke or a floral perfume. Things may move when you are sleeping, electronics act funny or a knocking- nothing malicious at all, and mostly it is just extended family who like to play jokes. If you pay no attention to them, they will ignore you as well. It is not a scary house; the spirits are more tricksters than anything. Steve is the protector, Fred is the mischief maker, and Sam wants to just hang out. There are many women as well (Linda and Maggie upstairs and Marilda in the kitchen) but they are just family here to protect the house and we have a great relationship (they know the ground rules and are welcoming to guests) and you keep them entertained.
