About this property
George Baldwin House Garden Apartment
The George Baldwin House was constructed in 1887. Designed by architect William Gibbons Preston. This was the first commission for Preston who later went on to design many of the most famous and impressive Savannah landmarks such as the Cotton Exchange. This home is largely original and rustic on the interior. The low price reflects that aspect of the unit interior but the incredible house and great location certainly are impressive. This is for those who want to experience something far different from a polished hotel room during their historic Savannah vacation. Brockington Hall is right next door. The apartment kitchen is stocked with basic utensils (plates, pots and pans, etc) as well as a refrigerator and stove and dishwasher. We do provide sheets and towels at this listing as well.
There are two separate bedrooms in this garden apartment unit, each with a Queen size bed. The bathroom is en suite with one of the bedrooms and the bedrooms have curtains as doors so this is great for parents with a teenager or 2 friends who want to sleep in separate beds but may not be suitable for 2 couples.
We do not have a sleeper sofa so this unit sleeps a max of 4 people.
The gardens and exterior of the home are other worldly, like stepping back in time. All outdoor space is shared with several other apartments in the mansion. Each apartment has its own private entrance. You have a very spacious screened in porch including an outdoor dining table and sofa that is private to this apartment. Parking is free and easy on the street at this location and the main downtown grocery store (Kroger) is less than a block away.

we were here for three nights and had a wonderful stay. the location was only a short walk to Forsyth... we parked our car on Thursday and didn't use it again til we left for home!
We were amazed at the history that was maintained. It did have an old smell but that was expected with the age of the building. We enjoyed the outdoor area. We enjoyed our short stay.
Visiting Savannah for a wedding. Family staying nearby so the location was great. Convenient to shopping and Forsythe park. Pleasant walk to the river and many restaurants nearby. The apartment was perfect for two adults with access to the garden and yard.
Place was just as described and perfect for our stay in Savannah. Place is within walking distance to most of the historic district and everything we wanted to see and do.
Amazing historic Savannah experience! Just out the door, we started a day-long walking tour, stopping at the grocery store across the street for dinner supplies on our way back in. Easy in and out and parking to do day trips as well. The rental itself feels like part of the historic experience, and was comfortable, clean, and as described. We had a lovely lunch in the screened-in patio and the kids enjoyed the garden space as well. Amazing stay - thank you!
Nice. Eclectic. Old and cool. Lots of history in that house. The house itself predates electricity in houses in Savannah, which is just a bit of historical info. Loved the property. Nice garden area and lovely screened in patio. Perfect for our little family- myself, my husband and our 14 y/o daughter we came down for a wedding. We had a much better experience than my parents and grandparents who all stayed in hotels. If you want to get an old-world Savannah feel, I highly recommend it. The washcloths were a little funky. But other than that, zero complaints. I would definitely book here again.
Incredible historic house with all the expected downsides, but the ambiance and location made up for them. Strange layout, one bedroom has bathroom and dining table, the other has the only tv. Living room type area is a covered screened in porch where we spent the majority of our time. Walking distance to Kroger grocery and fun cafe a block away. Free on street parking never had to park more than a block away. Would highly recommend but remember this is an historic house with floors that aren’t all level, and bathroom is only accessible through one of the bedrooms. Funky floor plan but quirky chic
The maintenance issue that arose during our stay was taken care of when we reported it.

Nice neighborhood
If you want to be apart of the culture in Savannah this is the right place for you. It was my husband, 13 year old daughter, and my 4 year old son and it was enough room for all 4 of us. Only thing is I wish the rooms had actual doors and not just curtains for privacy.

property misrepresented on offering
Great location
Had to call landlord to open and lock from door
Had to call landlord to open front gate
Not good
Much older condition interior than shown on site
Disappointed
Would not rebook
Th entry was difficult to locate at night as it was not clear or illuminated to point us where the steps were to find the carriage house. The kitchen lights also did not work and the ice machine made ice all night long because it was broken. There was also an odors in they air that made us think the pipes has rotted. Then we had a family above us that had children running constantly. The location and closeness to a supermarket were truly great so we enjoyed that.
First, the good. A convenient location with adequate parking and a short walk to a Kroger grocery. The courtyard was an excellent place for an early evening cocktail. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean. The bad. Kitchen was tiny and poorly lighted. The shower had two temperatures - too hot and too cold. Once you adjusted the water temp to your preference and began your shower the water temp would change - either hotter or colder. The sink mirror was poorly lighted and the sink fixtures, while adequate, were ancient.

Savannah!
Locating the property with the instructions provided was very easy. There is a Kroger market one block away which was handy. We have stayed at VRBO’s in Savannah in the past and this property was not nearly as nice. There were basic amenities but no frills! The furniture looked like mismatched thrift store items in poor condition. The courtyard was nice but the property definitely needed maintenance. The bathroom sink did not drain and the door handle into the master bedroom fell off in my hand! There was only one tv and it was maybe 24” in the master bedroom without cable! If you plan on bringing family in bad weather you should select another property as this property didn’t have a living room area other than a screened in dirty porch. I would rate this property 3/5 and that’s being generous!! A+ for the photographer who shot the pics for VRBO. It made this place look ALOT better than it actually is.
I’ve stayed in the carriage house for this property before. It’s as described. No surprises. Location is great. I walked to the river and back without incidence. The ease of parking is a huge deal for me. It feels like a relatively safe area. It’s one block from the city free CAT bus line that goes to Broughton where there is much available shopping. Kroger is right across the street. The neighborhood is filled with stunning historical homes. If you are staying in the 703 basement space, look at the email you get with the photos for entry instructions or else you will have difficulty. Just the history of the house is enough for me! I’ll be back!
We stayed 2 nights and everything was good. Close to everything and we used the patio for playing cards when we came home. All in all the stay was very good. We were out most of the day.
The other reviews are accurate about the layout and so the challenges of the space. But we were there to completely chill, not do very much and there’s enough room for us to be comfortable and we like the groovy vibe. It was too hot to enjoy the outdoor areas, but I’d like to come back and slightly cooler weather. I love the location and if it were cooler, I would’ve walked down to the main commercial area more than once though is a long walk. But there’s a handful of nice things around there plus the access to Kroger‘s pleasant if you’re just trying to get away and relax, which is exactly what we were doing.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND ANYONE TO STAY HERE, GREAT LOCATION, ALWAYS FREE PARKING RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE RENTAL, A KROGER LIKE 75 YARDS FROM YOU IN WALKING DISTANCE, FORSYTH PARK IS JUST A FEW BLOCKS AWAY FROM YOU, WE HAD A GREAT TIME! LOVE THE WAY THE PLACE IS SET UP! HAS A BIG OUTSIDE SCREENED IN PORCH AN A COURT YARD! AWESOME PLACE, WE STAYED HER LAST NOVEMBER 2024 AN WE CANE BACK AND WE WILL BE BACK AGAIN!
