Beautiful 3000 sqft cabin is the perfect place for family/friend gatherings. The river is just a 2 minute scenic easy walk with 6 adirondack chairs for comfort shaded by hardwood trees such as scarlet red oaks, maples, and populars. We added stairs (7 stone steps) with a rail for easy access to the river where you can swim, tube, fish, gem mine, enjoy nature, read a book and relax. As you walk to the river enjoy a beautiful view of the lower Cullasaja River Gorge Mountain rock face. Our luxurious cabin has many spaces for your family to enjoy! There is a game room with a pool table, large LED TV, comfortable couch and chairs to enjoy football games. In addition, a cozy living room with two leather recliners, a leather couch, two butterfly chairs, large LED TV, Starlink WiFi, fireplace, wood floors and paneling, lots of windows. The kitchen is big enough for the whole family to gather and equipped with whatever you need to make a gourmet meal. Enjoy the outdoors from a huge enclosed patio, with teak furniture, cafe tables and chairs and a antique hand made picnic table. One side of the patio has beautiful windows, the other side is screened so you can enjoy a breeze and hear birds singing. The decking outside has an upscale bbq grill, cooler for drinks, dining table with chairs, adirondack chairs, umbrella, railing and a gate to keep smaller children safe. Inside there is a separate dining room with a table for six, windows with gorgeous views of the meadow. In the evenings, enjoy a camp fire, smores, and fire flies from May-July. Our cabin is surrounded by 1.2 acres of grassy meadow and beautiful hardwood trees. Relax outside in hammocks or six andirondack chairs around the fire pit. The bedrooms are comfortable, one is located downstairs and two upstairs. Each bedroom is unique! The primary is huge with gorgeous architecture, beautiful views from many windows, wood ceiling/floors, a king size adjustable bed, galvanized table with two chairs, galvanized chest and night stands for a rustic yet modern feel, beautiful pine armoires to house your belongings. We refer to other upstairs bedroom as the hobbit room because of it's whimsical characteristic. It has a huge gorgeous custom window, lovely skylights, decorated with beautiful antique furniture and a beautiful brass bed that was imported from England. Look out the window in April/May and enjoy the dogwood blooms on the tops of trees and a close up look at North Carolina's beautiful birds. The large bathroom is amazing, gorgeous windows and skylight, the shower is custom made with beautiful slate tile and seating, a large antique tiger oak dresser with mirror, whimsical stainless steel sink. Also upstairs is a large office space in the loft area to work in if you must. Next door is another large room for your children to play make believe Cowboys and Indian's in a beautiful teepee, with hidden spaces in the walls, books and games, sleeping bags, and a beautiful view of the gorge from the windows and a huge skylight. There are two beautiful bath rooms downstairs, one has an amazing shower with assorted gorgeous slate tile and the other bathroom has a whirlpool tub to unwind and relax in as you gaze at the forest out the window. The third bedroom downstairs we call the basketcase room because of the basket making materials for decoration, has a skylight an beautiful antique bed, and separate access to the bathroom.
The cabin is located in the lower Cullasaja Gorge, it is just a 3 minute drive to highway 64, also called the Highlands Road. The Cullasaja Gorge is located along 64 between Franklin and Highlands, NC. The gorge is 7.5 miles of the Mountain Scenic By-way. This narrow, winding road parallels the Cullasaja River and offers spectacular views of the mountains and the river which boasts several waterfalls and many fishing opportunities.
Enjoy shopping and dining in restaurants in Highlands and Franklin. Hiking trails are close and easy access to beautiful waterfalls. Not far from Cherokee visit the Indian Reservation and Casino. Explore, Enjoy, make Memories in our beautiful cabin retreat!

Beautiful spacious home in a relaxing area
The home is beautiful, has very unique features, and was very clean. There was plenty of room for everyone to spread out and have quiet time to themselves. The pool table is a nice feature. It was too cold to enjoy the Sun room and beautiful deck outside, but there is so much space here! We stayed a few days after Christmas and the owner had a decorated Christmas tree up, which was such a nice warm welcome! We loved walking to the river and around the quiet and very private neighborhood. We especially enjoyed visiting nearby towns of Franklin and Dillsboro. The winding and narrow road from the house to Highlands is not for the faint of heart! I would highly recommend staying in this beautiful home for a relaxing getaway!

Amazing place for families!
The cleanest vacation home we have ever rented as well as the most well stocked! The thought to detail is amazing and so appreciated. There’s something for all ages and a large yard to play around in. It was especially warming to see the little touches for the little ones and they truly enjoyed the tent, toys and books. The master bed is sooooo comfortable, there’s more pillows than you dream, towels, toilet paper, basic pantry items throughout the house that you could practically bring just your clothes! I highly recommend Highland Outpost especially during fall/winter months for snow tubing and they have a kids area where the 15mo. And 3yr old could go snow tubing too! Follow directions given by host and not gps lol The area in general is beautiful and peaceful with many things to do but make sure you leave a day or two to enjoy the house. Made great memories in the area and the house and very thankful for the kindness and hospitality of Evelyn & Garry!

The best stay!
We loved every part of this home. Perfectly clean, well stocked kitchen, baby-proof for our two year old and filled with fun toys and exciting things for her- The walk to the river every morning was our favorite part. Our daughter loved running and exploring the property (and so did we!) So beautiful and so nice having access to the river to fish and enjoy. We hated to leave!

Great last weekend of summer trip
The property was as advertised and hosts very kind and helpful. We have stayed in many rental properties both in the US and aboard and this was the best ‘well stocked’ we have experienced. Having all the little essentials and many extras provided makes all the difference on how relaxing it feels for a mom with kids, especially when it’s a short weekend trip and you didn’t have the time or energy to pack half the house for a 2 day stay. Very easy to cook meals, family fun provided with various outdoor games, pool table, and the river a couple mins walk away. The property is also very clean and pictures in listing match property. A grocery store near by and a nice mountain retreat town for wandering through and lunch or dinner options a short drive away is a bonus for a low key weekend before the kids started back to school.

amazing cabin!
Evelyn and Gary have a beautiful cabin in Highlands! It was only my husband and me for this trip but the house is definitely set up for kids-baby gates on the top and bottom of the stairs, fun teepee and play room upstairs, pool table, small stools in the kitchen in case little ones want to help, etc. The cabin is so clean and well kept too. The bed upstairs is super comfortable with memory foam mattress and pillows. It feels like sleeping in a glamorous tent--windows all around the room and ceiling. It was so peaceful. The short walk down to the river is lovely. It was a great place to have coffee while my husband fly fished. He caught a few small mouth bass and enjoyed picking apart the section of the river on the property. We drove 30 minutes to hike the Whiteside Cliffs trail, 15 minutes to walk around Highlands, and about 30 minutes to meet our fly fishing guide at Brookings in Cashiers. It's a great location!

Great property about 20 min from Highlands’ Main Street
My family and I had the most memorable 2 week vacation at this property. My two boys (4.5 and 6) LOVED exploring the yard and creek. There was plenty to do on property that we didn’t need to leave! The house was very clean and incredibly well stocked. The hosts were very responsive and easy to get in touch with if needed. We hope to stay again!

Awesome Week at an Amazing Property
First of all our hosts, Evelyn and Garry are super nice people. They helped to make our stay even better. The house was great and had everything we needed. We enjoyed the outdoor and indoor patio areas, the river, the firepit, and the beautiful area we were in. We grilled out every evening and loved listening to and watching nature (lots of songbirds). It was a wonderful week and all four of us look forward to visiting it again. We ventured out to the towns of Franklin and Highlands as the property is pretty much in the middle of the two. We did ziplining at Navitat in Barnardsville (about a 90 minute drive), and tubing on the French Broad River at Tubular Tubing in Rosman (about an hour drive) and both were so worth the drive. It was an awesome week, thank you again Evelyn and Garry!

Great House / Incredible Land
I’ve stayed at many places around the highlands and this house was by far my favorite. This is also the first review I’ve ever given. The house was incredible. Perfect for kids. It was stocked with pretty much everything you need. The tempur pedic bed was a nice touch in the master bedroom. Windows throughout let you view the surrounding mountains and large plot of land the house was on. You could hear the rustling of the creek outside. My kids and I went on a creek hike which they loved. Couldn’t have asked for a better stay.

Total Relaxation
It was a wonderful stay. Prior reviews are accurate. The walk to the river was short and the river is beautiful. The house is stocked with lots of nice extras like seasonings, coffee, sugar etc. Very clean. The area has beautiful waterfalls. At first it was a little scary driving on the winding mountain road but the learning curve is short. Highlands Main St has nice stores and places to eat. Make a reservation for the nicer restaurants like Wolfgang’s. The 465 Pizza place, The Ugly dog pub and Los Vaqueros were available without reservations and the food was very good. Lots of fun and memorable activities in the area. Would love to come back soon to be able to enjoy more down time at the cabin. Definitely recommend this property!

5 Star Property
Exceeded expectation on every level. We spent hours outside in the expansive backyard around the fire and in the hammocks, or on the Cullasaja River. Highlands is a beautiful 15 minute drive. The kitchen was well stocked even with basic spices, coffee, and even candy jars for the kids. The grill was ready to go and worked great. All the grilling equipment was laid out nicely ready for use next to it. Rooms were comfortable and clean. Especially great for families with young kids as ours had so much fun in the playroom upstairs, and expansive yard. The baby gates around the stairs were much appreciated. Most of all the hosts were super responsive prior to the stay, check in was a breeze, and were extra helpful after our stay as we left one belonging. I look forward to staying here again.

Clean, cozy and charming!
We loved our stay! We 6 adults were very comfortable. Plenty of room in the house and yard to spread out and enjoy a puzzle, a book, or a nap! We spent a lot of time at the river, swimming, hunting gems and skipping stones. The sound of the river can be heard all over the property. Such a peaceful place. The humming birds were a wonderful surprise! We watched them all weekend and got such a kick out of listening to them buzz and chatter.

Cute, unique cabin
We really enjoyed this cute, unique property. Everything was clean, decorated beautifully and the kitchen was stocked with lots of spices and supplies. My daughter loved the playroom. It was about a 22 minute drive to downtown Highlands on some twisty roads and a bit down the mountain, but the river, fire pit, and lovely landscape was wonderful.

Fantastic Highlands Getaway
My family loves going to the Highlands to beat the Summer heat. This cabin exceeded our expectations and is our new favorite place. The piece of land surrounding the cabin is large, surprisingly flat, shaded, well maintained, and contains a short trail to the riverfront. All of this while still only a short drive to downtown Highlands! The cabin itself is clean, unique, and great for the kids. We had a blast and will be going back for sure!

Wonderful stay
We had a great time here! Garry and Evelyn were very nice and accommodating. We did not have any issues at all! We loved taking the two minute walk to the river, climbing rocks and playing in the water. At night, we played pool for hours! The house was clean, and well stocked with anything and everything we needed. I’m serious, we could have just brought clothes and been set (there was even two types of baby soap)! The beds were comfortable, and the bedding was nice! The showers felt very luxurious, and the soaker tub was a nice treat. My daughter (1 1/2) loved playing with the bears and Teepee in the room attached to the main suite. An added bonus was the baby gates at the top and bottom of the stairs. It really eased our minds. The house was about 15 minutes to Franklin, and 20 minutes to the Highlands town center. We enjoyed eating at Lucio’s restaurant and Haywood Smokehouse. My husband enjoyed grilling (with a view) more than anything though. The check out process was easy, and not demanding like many rentals we have stayed in. Overall, I’d say this was a great stay for families or couples.

Immaculate House and Friendly Owners
It was a little tricky to find the right exit into the area since it's in a beautiful rustic wooded setting but once we got on the right drive, we were impressed. The property was well maintained and lovely. The layout is.... unique... but it had more than enough space for all of us and they provided many more amenities than we are used to. Pretty much anything we needed was provided from coffee to aluminum foil. The interior was immaculately maintained and had adorable extra features like a wooden tepee for the kids and antique furniture. The first couple of nights there was an issue with the air conditioning but the owners went above and beyond to resolve the matter in a professional and prompt manner as soon as we let them know about the problem. They were very friendly and welcoming. The walk to the river was a little further than we expected but it was a lovely landscaped walk and well worth the journey. There were chairs at the water's edge, steps down to the water and it was beautiful. The kids enjoyed playing on the rocks and the river was actually much wider and deeper than expected. We even tried a little fishing! We had the grandchildren with us and they enjoyed roasting hot dogs over the fire pit, swinging in the hammocks and chasing fireflies. But, most of all, they discovered playing pool on the high quality pool table. Our ten year old is obsessed with the game now! There are beautiful water falls and a gem mining place just a short drive away. We very much enjoyed the peacefulness of the area and would recommend this as a nice family place to stay.

A Lovely Place To Stay
This is a magical cabin with a very convenient location to both Franklin and the Highlands. The cabin was immaculate and Evelyn and Gary and great hosts and they included so many thoughtful touches, from coffee and tea to great quality linens in all of the bedrooms. We really enjoyed all of the spaces to gather and spend time together with our favorite beverages. It is also extremely kid friendly, with lots of gates to prevent accidents, and a spectacular space in the loft, complete with it's own teepee for kids to enjoy some creative play time. I would definitely book again when we are back in the area.

About the host

Hosted by Evelyn and Garry Mason

Host profile image
Garry and I worked in the hospitality field for a company that known for excellence, high standards, exceptional service that has provided vacations and entertainment for families for over 75 years. We loved our jobs so it seemed natural that we would want to continuing doing what we loved by hosting a vacation rental. We started hosting our first vacation rental called "Muskrat Love" in 2018. We have enjoyed providing a place where families and friends can call their second home. A place where they can relax, feel comfortable, and spend quality time together. Where friends and families can get outside, take a hike and discover nature and wildlife. Where they can enjoy fun adventures such as rafting and zip-lining. To create great memories to cherish for years to come. Since we love what we do and provide for our guests, we decided to embark on a second vacation home, this one in Highlands in a valley with access to the Cullasaja River.

Why they chose this property

When Garry and I saw this property, we were in awe over the beauty and location of this home. The large french inspired kitchen is a place where families can gather while the chef is cooking a gourmet meal. You can sit in the kitchen to enjoy your meal or make your way to the formal dining room that has beautiful view of the property. The wood ceilings, beams, and paneling give this home a cozy cabin feeling, but unlike small cabins, this home is 3000sqft! It has lots of character, unique windows, skylights galore, beautiful multi colored slate tile, gorgeous bathrooms, secret spaces, and a huge enclosed patio that makes me envious. The architecture in the master bedroom is breathtaking, the large windows are amazing (warning you may not want to sleep if you are a star gazer). There is a nursery/playroom next to the master, we don't have a bed in there but if you have a portable crib that's the perfect place to put it. We do have a couple children sleeping bags for playtime and coming soon...a teepee. There are roll down curtains on the doors/windows for privacy. The second upstairs bedroom we call "The Hobbit Room" it has a gorgeous window that faces the river. There are two huge skylights and a smaller window under the large window that opens to let the sound of the river in. The downstairs bedroom is called the "basket case" room. That is where all the basket weaving tools/materials were kept and so we thought we would leave it that way for others to enjoy!. There is a large office space with a desk with a huge skylight...we have Starlink WiFi over 50mbps internet speed that is rare in the mountains. The pool table room has a large flat screen TV with a door that opens to the spacious and private decking. I joked with my husband that a man (or woman) can multi-task here: shoot pool, watch his/her favorite sports game, while grilling on the BBQ grill. Then take a 2 minute walk to the River where you can swim, raft, fish, relax and unwind.

What makes this property unique

Our vacation home's private drive is located off the national forestry scenic by-way, if you turn right you will pass 4 beautiful waterfalls with pull offs and/or car parking in a 15 minute span. The first "Cullasaja Waterfall" is about 5 minutes down the road, then "Kick Your Butt Falls", "Dry Falls", and "Bridal Veil Falls". You'll start your drive with a close up look at the beautiful Cullasaja River Gorge, which you can see from the comfort of your vacation home:) You'll follow the bi-way along the Cullasaja river through winding roads until you get to Highlands to do some shopping, visit restaurants, take a hike, play golf, go fishing, gem mining, etc. In June/July stars and fire flies light up the sky! In April the dogwoods and mountain laurel bloom! In spring fruit trees, wildflowers show there beautiful colors. Birds singing and courting a potential girlfriend. Fall (mid October) is amazing! People who visit the mountains of WNC refer to them as a spiritual place, magical, majestic, or God's Country.
