Rent a private room in the gorgeous Holt House and bask in the ornate mixed designs of John Calvin Stevens, one of America's greatest architects of the late nineteenth century. Conveniently located on Congress Street in the West End, the building is convenient to everything that is Portland. Maine Medical is a stones throw, restaurants, Civic Center, the world famous Old Port, interstate 295, and of course the waterfront are all within walking distance.

The location is amazing and the room had everything we needed to be in town for the weekend. The bed was super comfortable and the bathroom had all the products. It was a little warm in the room even with the AC on but they had a large fan in the closet that made it much more comfortable! Would stay here again!
Enjoyed our stay in this historic building. Convenient to local restaurants, city center, hospital and a Walgreens. It was about a 15-20 minute walk to the Port and the tourist district. Well worth it. Coffee and tea setup in the room along with a mini-fridge was perfect for us in the mornings. We had access to a full kitchen in the building as well. Our communication with the host was very good.
We were concerned about some of the postings we read, I'm happy to confirm that we had a great stay. The room was clean and comfortable the house was clean and locked. The other guests were pleasant when we talked to them. There was both a hair dryer and an iron. All in all a great stay at a reasonable price.
Parking was awful. Portland has the dumbest rules. Holy need to make arrangement with Walgreens for parking. If dining was not so great I would give this place the lowest score possible
The property was exactly as seen in the photos, if not a little bit more breathtaking. Wonderful Architecture and tastefully decorated and all the amenities needed for a long weekend or week.
The convenience of the location can not be beat, walking around town is simple with plenty of sites in between destinations, we spent a whole afternoon just taking in the Neighborhoods Architecture. It doesnt hurt that Tandem Coffee is a block away and worth the crowds for a Pastry and Caffeine.
Our Host was helpful on check in and check out as well. We never felt left to "figure it out". Cant wait to come back.
Great location very close to Congress avenue shops and restaurants, West End and Western Promenade, and State Theatre as well as the Arts district.
Decor inside was just strange but the place was relatively comfortable. It's just one room with a bed.
It was warm when we were there with no fans or AC it was stuffy. Couldn't open windows due to outside smokers.
Residence smelled a little of smoke and cover uip of smoke. Not unbearable but noticed by me.
Despite being right on Congress it was very quiet which is great.

Pros and cons.
Pros: close to everything downtown Portland, very convenient. Liked having Walgreens next door. The room was overall cozy. Had Wifi, TV, a fridge, a coffee machine, cups and silverware, and toiletries.
The maid was very sweet.
Cons:
1. Room smelled like cigarettes
2. Found someone else’s takeout order under our bed which was covered in mold.
3. Check-in process was awful - we were not provided with check in details, had to sit on the phone with customer service for over an hour. Property manager was not helpful and refused to provide check in details until we called customer service 3 times.

Safety was the big concern. The key for the door was in wrong lockbox. Both lockboxes had the same code. There was no additional inside lock for room door. There was not a peephole in door. The bathroom window did not have a lock. Wound up proping a chair under the doorknob. Other residents of building looked pretty sketchy. Did not feel safe in neighborhood at night. Parking was very difficult to find and was blocks away. The kitchen sink had dirty dishes in it and the fridge was horrid. The historical aspects of the building were beautiful and the room was decorated well. There were some good restaurants nearby. I would not stay here again or recommend it.
Where do I start. We found dirty clothing left by some previous guest on the floor behind the bed and in a corner as well as a used food container on the floor in another corner.
No amenities, as in no hair dryer and no iron but there was an ironing board! Even worse, I sent a message the day before asking about both items and got no reply!! In addition the keys were in the wrong lock box.
The location was great, close to everything. But I would not recommend this place nor will I return.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Holt House. The location was perfect as walks down Congress into Portland center and other areas were easy to find. We made use of the common kitchen area each morning to scramble eggs before embarking on our day. Our room had an in room private bath which we would recommend. Thank you for a nice Portland experience!

Parkside a bit on the dark side.
Room extremely dark. Kitchen area not clean. No clean mugs/cups. Washed the only two I found in the sink and used those. Absolutely no soap in room, had to buy hand soap, etc. Many people around day and night outside the home property smoking and just hanging around. Noisy thumping bass ‘music’ first two nights. Just not great.
Walking in to Holt House is like walking into a grand old home. The rooms are lush and a little dark, nice and spacious. Fast walk to downtown and amenities, great Thai coffee right across the street.
