We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Backwoods Retreat. The house was perfect and comfortable and dog friendly. We loved the peacefulness and solitude of the property grounds. Being able to view the wildlife from the front porch while drinking a cup of coffee was a wonderful bonus. Mike and Deanna are wonderful hosts and have done a fantastic job in making their guests feel welcome. We are looking forward to returning in the future.
Perfect retreat to view nature! The hosts are wonderful . They had plenty of chilled water in the fridge and granola bars in case we needed something on arrival. So thoughtful! The home is laid out thoughtfully and super clean! Thank for a lovely stay!
We had a fantastic stay at this quiet and clean cabin! The property is absolutely beautiful, with a spacious backyard and a great grill setup for outdoor meals. We were treated to amazing wildlife views every day, which made the experience even more special. The kids especially loved fishing in the pond! The location is also perfect—peaceful and relaxing, yet just a short drive from New River Gorge National Park. A wonderful place to unwind and explore the area.
We enjoyed a relaxing retreat that is truly an "almost heaven" experience. The cabin was just the right size for our group of four plus two dogs, and was neat, tidy and well-equipped. The hosts were kind and accommodating. The location was secluded just enough to give you the feeling of disconnect from the hustle and bustle, but was also only miles away from markets, restaurants and other conveniences. We went out every day to explore what the national park has to offer, but I would not have minded spending a whole day, just sitting on the front porch/deck, watching the local wild life. Highly recommend. If you are thinking of a more extended stay, please note that laundry-related amenities are not offered with this property. It was an only a three-night stay for us, so it was not an issue or a concern, but for longer stays, you will need to pack accordingly.
We had a wonderful time. The house is beautiful with so many thoughtful touches. The view was amazing. We loved being able to walk around the beautiful property. It was great having a fenced in backyard for our dog to run around. The owner were so friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend.
First time staying in WV. Came up for the week and this cabin was wonderful. The perfect get away from our bustling city life. The host was accommodative and communicative. If you like hiking, the property has a nice 2 mile trail on it with an overlook at the top. Highly recommend staying here.
The property was beautiful and the hosts were amazing, very attentive. We were celebrating my friends birthday and when we arrived she had hung a happy birthday sign above the fire place and left a bottle of local wine for us to enjoy. If you're looking for quiet, peaceful and beautiful scenery this is the place for you.
Amazing place to stay close to all the hiking, sight seeing, rafting, and food. Super clean. Owners are great people. Abundant wildlife to see from the front porch. Fun fishing the pond. Lots of bass. Owner caught us some fresh minnows to use for bait. Hiking trails on property were great also. Would definitely stay again.
The property is beautiful and so pet friendly. A fenced dog run, fenced in back yard and gated front porch ensured our dog could get outdoor time without risk of escape. The house is very clean and comfortable. I love the two full bathrooms! The owners are very responsive and welcoming. We will definitely be back!
Excellent location! Secluded and peaceful but only 20 minutes away from New River Gorge. House was very clean and comfortable. It was well stocked with everything we needed. The fenced backyard was great for our dogs, and there was lots of outdoor seating to enjoy the beautiful countryside. We enjoyed visits from deer every night and listening to the frogs in the pond -- the only sounds you can hear! The owners were so nice, and they were available next door if we needed anything.
Very peaceful setting on the side of a mountain with a great view of the well kept property. The layout of the house was especially convenient with split bedrooms and bathrooms and plenty of room. There are lots of windows looking out on the forest. Nice fenced in back yard with a spacious deck. Deanna and Mike were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We really enjoyed watching the deer. We also enjoyed the private hiking trails up the mountain behind the house. Oak Hill is only a short drive away for groceries or to eat, and Fayetteville is not much farther.
This property was perfect! Tucked away in the hills, this house gave us a perfect place to spend quality time as a family. My son caught his first fish, well first 8 fish, with the help of the owners grandkids who immediately upon our arrival invited him to come fishing with them on the properties lake. The view on the front porch was peaceful and relaxing. The fire pit in the back was perfect for s’mores. The area had so much to do! We stayed 4 nights and still didn’t see everything. The waterfalls in the area were amazing. It was truly the perfect getaway for my parents and my family to meet up.
When planning our visit we looked for a property that would offer easy access to the north and south ends of New River Gorge National Park. After looking at other properties in town, we settled on this secluded location based on the other reviews. We were not disappointed! Our "deer" friends visited every morning and evening and were a joy to watch from the porch. Mike and Deanna were gracious hosts that made you feel welcome in West Virginia. The property itself is worth exploring if you feel like staying put for a day. Be aware that the drive to Backwoods Retreat is a long, but well maintained, gravel road that puts you right on the doorstep. But the reward is well worth the effort. If you desire a bit of privacy on your trip, with tremendous views of the West Virginia landscape and wildlife, you will not be disappointed.
My husband I stayed for three nights. Each evening (and one early morning) we watched the deer come out of the woods at dusk and graze for a good hour or more. We also saw a few turkeys.
The long drive way is definitely long but worth it! The home was exactly as described and was quite cozy. The kitchen had everything we needed and the bed was comfortable.
We met Mike and talked to him several times. He was extremely pleasant. He and his wife even told us we could check out late if we wanted because they didn’t have another coming right away. They live right next door but we didn’t notice them at all, except when Mike went to get the dogs.
We weren’t far from the National park or the New River Bridge. Shopping and dining were also close by.
We had a delightful time and would recommend this rental.
Actually, "almost heaven" might undersell this property!
My fiancé and I were in the area to tour the newest national park, the New River Gorge. We found this property to be absolutely IDEAL! It's convenient, charming, incredibly-well equipped (Rokus in main bedroom & living room), and run by two of the nicest people we have ever met!
The property is convenient to both the bridge and Grand View sections of the park. After long days of hiking we were able to grab take-out and enjoy it back at the house. However, we were even happier cooking in the full-size and fully equipped kitchen!
I reached out prior to our stay to ensure we would be provided firewood during out stay. Not only did they provide the firewood they kept us fully stocked! We were able to use both the outdoor firepit and the indoor fireplace and never went through the wood they prepared for us.
And I have to mention just how incredible the actual property is. In-spite of being very convenient to the park and town it feels like you're totally secluded in the mountains! The house has a wonderful view over the front lawn and backs up to a mountain with a hiking trail Mike showed us. And at night the stars stand out like no where else I've been. We really enjoyed watching for shooting stars while enjoying the fenced backyard with our dog.
And that is another great point. The back yard is totally fenced and we had no concerns leaving our rough-collie out to enjoy the crisp fall weather.
RECOMMENDED!
Our stay at Backwoods Retreat was amazing! I will attempt to do it justice. The property is gorgeous! During the day there were deer, birds and all the beauty of the surrounding mountains. At night, the sky was filled with so many stars, it was hard to pick out even the most basic constellation. It is so quiet/peaceful! There is a hiking trail, as well as a pond to fish or just sit by and take in the beauty surrounding you. The house is perfect. The sofa/beds are comfortable. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, pots/pans, a crock pot, a single serve blender, a k-cup coffee maker and a drip coffee maker, a microwave and a dishwasher. The televisions have Roku. Service was never disrupted, even during a thunderstorm. The showers are nice sized and everything in the house was clean. The back yard was perfect and secure enough that we could let our dog out without worry. The deck is nice sized with a table and chairs. There was a nice sized grill and a fire pit with a nice supply of wood. The front porch is perfect and secured with a gate. There are several steps up to the front porch, but one could also walk around to the back door if needed (2 steps). The one lane gravel road that leads to the house was easy to navigate. Traffic was nonexistent. Above all, what made this house extra special, were the owners! They were always available but never intrusive. They were the kindest, most accommodating and genuine people I have ever met. This was a dream vacation!
This is a hidden gem IF I did not live so far away (Hawaii) I Would stay here at least once a year. We stayed 5 nights... and would have wished for another 5.You will not regret your stay here in the quiet hills of WV. Mahalo for the wonderfil experience. Capt. Gary0
