This was easily the best VRBO we’ve ever stayed at! The hosts Chris and Julie are wonderful we accidentally ended up at their main house and they were so kind and understanding of our mess up. Julie left our kids little stuffed animals which they loved and took home! The property is so clean and inside there is everything you could need for a stay! It really felt like home. Chris was super responsive to any needs and has a wealth of knowledge about the area and things to do! Our kids loved “talking” to the cows and running around in the beautiful countryside! The porch was perfect for morning coffee and wine by the fire at night. The views are absolutely breathtaking and the peaceful nature sounds are really relaxing. We enjoyed our stay immensely and will be back!

We had such a lovely stay. The view was amazing and we especially enjoyed the porch at various times of the day. So picturesque! It was also enjoyable to “hike” around the property. The house was comfortable, modern and tastefully, well-appointed with many wonderful details. Chris and Julie were very kind and excellent hosts. They had helpful suggestions and were available if needed. It’s a beautiful area with so much to enjoy. We highly recommend Cardinal Cottage!

This was our third time staying at Cardinal Cottage, and we are already looking forward to returning in the future! It is so peaceful sitting on the back porch, watching the clouds move over the mountains. Chris and Julie have thought of many special touches throughout the cottage that make our stay comfortable and relaxing.

We have been renting with VRBO for at least 15 years and have had several outstanding proporties, and Cardinal Cottage is right up there with the absolute best. The property is in a fabulous location, with the most stunning view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The only noise is from the cattle nearby, birds snd occasional passing plane. It is the perfect location to enjoy the Shenendoah Valley and near by town of Staunton and Lexington. The Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway are a short distance away. The hosts, Julie and Chris, couuld not have been any more accomodating!!!

This is a wonderful place to stay. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The bedrooms are spaced out to allow for privacy but the table and living spaces are wonderful for gathering. We enjoyed being able to cook meals in both the kitchen and on the grill. Communication with the owners was very easy. This was our second time staying there and we will be back!

Our second time staying in this magical place and we stayed almost 3 weeks. Doesn’t that tell you how amazing Cardinal Cottage is??Immaculately clean, beautifully decorated, with views that changed hourly. The colors were mesmerizing. There are so many places to sit and relax, read, and feel renewed. We loved walking the roads and seeing our friends the cows. You couldn’t ask for more interesting, warm, responsive and gracious hosts. One of our top favorite places to stay across this country! We would be lucky to come back again!

This was the perfect spot for a nice family getaway! The cottage was exceptionally clean with incredible attention to detail. The cottage has every amenity/supply you could ever need. Chris & Julie were quick to respond to messages and were so welcoming! We loved sitting on the patio enjoying the views and watching the animals. It was so peaceful and quiet. We explored Wades Mill, Lexington and Stanton. Lunch at The Palms & Gelato at Pronto in Lexington. Lunch at Blue Point in Stanton for fresh oysters/seafood. We also had a great German dinner at Edelwiess. Thanks for sharing your slice of the Shenandoah Valley. We will definitely be back!

About the host

Hosted by Chris and Julie Fox, Jumping Fox LLC

Host profile image
Chris is from nearby Fairfield, Julie from Massachusetts. We lived overseas for many years and bought this property in 1987 with the intention of retiring here one day. Since 2014 it is a dream come true, we have retired and built a home here. Eight years later we constructed a purpose-built house for guests on our property to enjoy the unique beauty, activities and peace of the area.

Why they chose this property

We built this house specifically for guests when we have more than we can handle at our house, for big family get-togethers, and to share with our VRBO guests. Every aspect of the house was built for you, the guest. We hope you will appreciate it and enjoy it very much.

What makes this property unique

Incredible setting in the Shenandoah Valley. Gorgeous views, sunsets and dark starry nights. This is a true getaway, yet only 15 minutes from Highway 81/64. You are about 30 minutes from the charming cities of Staunton and Lexington, yet when you get "home" to Cardinal Cottage, you are away from it all, listening to the cattle on the farm, watching deer come down out of the woods at dusk, watching the most beautiful sunsets, and enjoying the comforts of an energy-efficient purpose-built country home. We hope that artists discover this property; what a place to paint, write, compose music, be inspired, be creative and rejuvenate.
