Rustic Getaway, Off beaten Path

This home is very humble and cozy, which is to say, if you're into amenities and shiny things, it's not for you. We had (4) adults and (6) kids all in the rental, which had adequate spacing and sleeping arrangements, linens and towels all provided. It's a true weathered lake cabin, with canoe, fishing poles, and the likes. Wonderful family and friend memories made.

Good Place at a Great price

The house is very big and accommodating. The yard and beach access was a major plus. There was a cockroach inside which was slightly off putting but not a huge deal. We requested sheets which they kindly provided. Communication was great and check in/out was seamless.

Beautiful place to stay!

My group had so much fun with the private beach! The canoe was such a great amenity along with the ping pong table. Would definitely say to make sure you bring your own toilet paper and paper towels etc, but other than that had a fabulous stay in an absolutely beautiful area. Would recommend this vacation to anyone.

Spring Break Getaway

We stayed the week for our spring break and the property did not disappoint. Besides the well appointed rooms and the kitchen the luxury of the private beach felt most special. It was hard to step away from the shores of the York with such lovely weather, however we did manage to explore the historical and significant sites that were so close to our stay. With every visit we find something new and look forward to another visit soon.

House a little quirky

We mainly picked this property for the location, and we were mostly happy with that aspect of the stay. The property was convenient to Williamsburg and Busch Gardens while still being on the water. But there were neighboring properties very close by (literally sharing the lot), and while the neighbors were friendly, we didn't expect to be interacting with anyone. The house itself was quirky. The layout of the upstairs isn't ideal because you had to go through one of the bedrooms to access 2 other rooms, and our teens were not happy about that. There were also small steps up and down to all the rooms on the main floor, which we tripped on several times. And none of us were used to well water. Although we used the provided water cooler to drink, the smell of the well water made showering unpleasant, and we cooked with it at one point and the pasta was nearly inedible. And our friends complained that the upstairs bedroom with the queen bed, the mattress was very firm and uncomfortable, and the blinds would not close all the way so the sun woke them up early each day. These were all minor issues and some of us were more willing to overlook them than others, but my group would not choose to rent this property again if we were looking in the area.

Nice week!

The house and location are really good. Nice little sandy beach. The house is well kept and equipped, glad I went with the linin/towel package. Only thing I'd like to see would be an outside shower.

Suggestions

We enjoyed our stay. It was relaxed and enjoyable ! The only comments I would like to make for fix, not so much negative ! Water pressure in the showers was low, the back porch door closure jammed and we removed it, laid it on porch table to secure the door. Private beach alot of seaweed, kids not able to play in sand or water

Beautiful home and location!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The owners were very pleasant, responsive, and helpful. The home was beautiful and clean, and we all really enjoyed the little beach out back. Kids were excited with the canoe, and we even had fun while waiting out Tropical Storm Elsa for a whole day. My girls and I really enjoyed the kitchen, listening to the radio and preparing meals for our group of 9. Thanks so much for an unforgettable family vacation! We hope to come back!

Hidden gem!

Our family of 7 enjoyed this home! There was something for everyone to do! My 8 year and 11 year old especially loved the beach area. They caught so many crabs and spent hours there! It’s close enough to the parks but far enough away from all the town life. We had deer, frogs, lizard visitors. The space of the house was perfect as well as a fully stocked kitchen! Neighbors are extremely nice too! Would recommend picking this home!

Riverfront Weekend Stay

The house really needs a deep clean, and some maintenance items need to be addressed. The kitchen was not well stocked with silverware, and there's a limited selection of cookware. None of the bathrooms had hand soap or hand towels, and we had to purchase kleenex and toilet paper. These are generally provided in VRBO rentals. There's not much room in the "living room", considering the number of bedrooms. The layout of the house is odd, broken up into small areas. Several of the flooring thresholds are trip hazards. The upstairs has a nice play area for kids. The kitchen is very large, with a large table and bar area. Double ovens was a plus. The view of the river is nice.We parked 4 cars without issue. The property shares a driveway and parking area with a neighboring rental. Our trashcan was full after a three night stay.

Lovely long weekend at the River House

We had a lovely stay at the River House. Despite the rain for the first few days, our kids stayed entertained in the house playing hide and seek and board games. We enjoyed the scenic drive to Colonial Williamsburg and our time there. And we got some great sun on our last day, and the kids really enjoyed splashing in the water and playing on the beach while the adults read at the picnic table in the yard. My only suggestion is to bring water shoes if you will be playing in the water as there are some oyster shells that caused a few cuts.

Wonderful location, spacious, as described

The Granger’s home is wonderful. It has a great location on the York River with a little private beach. It is a spacious house and has a comfortable master bedroom bed and a nice jacuzzi tub which made our stay nice. The house is close to Williamsburg (the historic triangle) and not too far from the coast (Virginia Beach). The house isn’t as luxurious as other 5 star homes we have stayed in (some houses provide some consumables like cleaning products, trash bags, spices, and starter rolls of toilet paper and basic linens), but we definitely were happy and comfortable and would rent again. We are so incredibly grateful that home owners like the Grangers open their homes to renters like us.

Stunning view, average stay.

This home has an amazing view! Lots of beds to accommodate a stay with a large family. Unfortunately the house was not very clean. We were visiting my parents who live locally so we were only at the house to sleep at night, otherwise it would have been a bit harder to tolerate. Especially for the price, having to pay for a linen package, etc. I expected a 5 star experience, & it fell short.

Nice location but ....no toiletries?

Let me start by saying the property is in a very nice location, private beach, beautiful big yard, ample parking too. Once you get inside however, a property this size barely had enough soap and toilet paper in it for a family to use without running out the first night. Maybe most renters drive and don't have an issue either bringing toiletries or driving 20+ min to Walmart to buy them but I personally flew in from Georgia so it wasn't easy rationing toilet paper. Also, the property isn't the cleanest. That always strikes me when I see it in rentals because they all charge cleaning fees, so the expectation is for it to be very clean when you get there. Some spots behind furniture looked like they hadn't been touched in months. The furniture is outdated. The kitchen was great and having laundry appliances was also great. Ping pong table was a nice touch, the paddle boat too. The kids enjoyed the bunk beds and the beach.

Decent but read details below

There’s a lot about the property that isn’t described well in the post such as you’re next to another home where people rent long term-not only sharing a driveway. The house is very “80s” and has some updates such as the kitchen floor but also has very old carpet along with mouse traps that still had the dead mice in them. But the location and private beach is a plus and the house does comfortably sleep 8-10 people. My BIGGEST concern with this property was that the host NEVER communicated with me after he received all the money for the rental AND the number on his site isn’t his, it sent me to some park service. This was a big deal for us as we paid extra for linens only to show up and NONE were provided. Thank goodness we found the “emergency sheets” or we would be having to go purchase sheets. Won’t be going back but it was perfect weather so we stayed outside on the beach all day long. If you’re just looking for a place that’s only a shell with furniture to make food and you’re fine with bringing ALL your own things but want a private bay beach then this is the place!

Beautiful and convenient

1. What a beautiful property, the view can't be beat and watching thunderstorms over the river was amazing! 2. Plenty of room!!!! Family of 7...we were quite comfortable. 3. Super convenient to Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown and we even spent a day at the Virginia Air and Space museum in Hampton (about 45 minutes away). 4. If you are traveling with kids....this is the BEST house for hide and seek that I have ever stayed in. We played every single day of vacation! 5. Owners very responsive. We had to contact them because the AC died (in August!). They had someone out to repair it very quickly to make sure our stay was comfortable. 6. Hot tip...bring toilet paper and paper towels. While the owners do ask that each guest leave some for the next as a courtesy, that doesn't mean the previous guest followed that procedure. After a long drive we arrived all having to go and 2 squares of tp in the house lol. 7. The towel/linen package includes bedding and bathroom towels. No kitchen towels. I never realized how much I use kitchen towels until I didn't have them...bring those too! Otherwise kitchen well stocked to cook and eat. We look forward to staying again our next trip to Virginia!

About the host

Hosted by Greg Granger

Host profile image
I was born and raised in Williamsburg, Virginia. Married my beautiful wife Lisa and we have three great kids who enjoy canoeing & kayaking on the river.

Why they chose this property

I chose to buy this vacation home because of its proximity to Williamsburg. It is close enough for a quick drive and just far enough to feel like you are really getting away. Growing up in Williamsburg we often traveled to Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks of North Carolina for vacation. Now a lovely drive on the Colonial Parkway over the Coleman Bridge and we are there without the headache of a long traffic filled road trip.

What makes this property unique

The Getaway has it all - water sports, a relaxing private sandy beach, and is convenient to Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Yorktown, and more. With accommodations for 10, there is room to spread out.
