About this property

Magnificent 5 Bedroom House Fronting Onto Shoreline with Wifi

Sycamore House is situated in the picturesque village of Ballyvaughan in the heart of the Burren National Park, a karst limestone region, one of the largest in Europe where you will find arctic, Mediterranean and alpine plants side by side. From the front of the house you can see the rolling hills of the Burren, its limestone pavements with crisscrossing cracks known as 'grikes' leaving isolated rocks called 'glints'. The rear of the house is mostly glazed to take in the views of Ballyvaughan harbour and across Galway Bay and the mountains of Connemara.

With its large gently sloping lawn fronting onto the shoreline, a pathway from the house along by an old stone wall leads to flag stone steps onto the sea shore. There is also a secluded seating area with polished limestone table at the end of this pathway where one can relax and watch the ever changing seascape as the tides go in and out. The house has been designed to optimize the views. From the moment you enter the house you have views of Galway Bay. The sunken open plan kitchen-dining area is the heart of the house and boasts a glass wall 24'long by 12' high. The house is centrally heated throughout and for added comfort there is a solid fuel stove in this area which gives a warm cozy feeling when temperatures outside start to drop. Total floor space in the house is 3200 sq ft so space is generous in every room. All five bedrooms are ensuite and we pride ourselves on the quality of our beds and linen. Between them there are four queen sized beds and three single beds and the master bedroom which stands alone on the upper level has an extra sofa bed which is mostly used for relaxing with a glass of wine and a good book while also gazing out to sea.

Ballyvaughan village regarded as the jewel in the crown of the Burren region has a choice of good restaurants, craft shops and local shops. It is the ideal base to explore the rich heritage of the Burren and surrounding areas. The famous Burren Way (26 miles of green road) starts in Ballyvaughan, goes to Fanore, Doolin and ends in Liscannor taking in the Cliffs of Moher.

For the golfers, the famous links course at Lahinch is only a thirty minute drive from the house and further down the Clare coast is the Greg Norman designed Doonbeg course. There is also a choice of less well known courses such as Gort and Ennis.

Close to the house the unspoiled beaches of Bishops Quarter and Fanore invite you to swim ,kayak and surf. The sheltered Ballyvaughan Bay is suitable for all kinds of water activities. Try a swim in the sea or learn to dive with the Burren Adventure Dive Centre.

Finally when it is time to relax the living room beckons to put your feet up, with its plush leather sofas and soft furnishings and to add to the atmosphere on those cooler nights why not start a fire in the large open fireplace made from polished Burren stone. As an added treat firewood is provided free of charge.

A most beautiful house. The space is amazing. Beautiful views. 5 minute walk to the village. The beds were super comfy. The Seanus the host is a gem. He met us on arrival. He had both fires lighting and the house was beautifully warm. We will definitely stay again

Best week

We have just got back after a wonderful week in this property the views and space are amazing. House is beautiful an 8 min walk into Ballyvaughan. Seamus met us at the house on arrival to let us know what to do with everything and also gave us lots of advice on where to go and what to do - which was a game changer. A week just doesnt seem long enough to explore the wonderful area and Ireland. We will be back Thanks for a fab week The Murphys, Smyths, Sharples, Kneales & Lathams

First Class in Every Respect

Three generations of our family (youngest aged 4) spent a week in this spectacular house in Ballyvaughan. Everything about it exceeded expectations - from Seamus’ friendly welcome onwards. The house is vast - loads of space for 4 families, each bedroom with its own en suite shower (and a separate bathroom too, great for the little ones). The kitchen is so well equipped, everyone could be seated for meals - the sitting room, too, is large and comfortable, with seating for all. The setting of, and views from, the house are stunning - a beautiful long garden reaches down to the water’s edge. A walk along the shore takes you to a small pier (where many happy hours were spent crabbing) and on into the village itself. There’s so much to do in the area. This stretch of coast is beautiful. The sea, the cliffs, the burren….we were spoilt for choice and would love to return.

Beautiful property and location

The house is lovely. Plenty of room. Beds are very comfortable. Property is well equipped with lots of everyday essentials you’re more than welcome to use. Ideally located about a 5-10 min walk into the village either via the road/pavements or across the stone beach at the bottom of the garden. Seamus is a diamond, and nothing was too much trouble.

Ballyvaughan - into the West

This is a superb property for a large family group. We gathered in the evenings in the magnificent kitchen to enjoy the wonderful sea views, a glass of wine and the craic. Spacious home and even better than the photos. We take with us great family memories of our time in Ballyvaughan and the beautiful scenery of County Clare.

Lovely Family Break

We had a lovely week stay at the house. With 6 adults and 5 children there was more than enough space for us all , and we all enjoyed heading down to the bottom of the garden to enjoy the view and water. The house provided an excellent base for exploring the local area and we couldn’t have asked for anymore.

Amazing place and hosts

On arrival, both Seamus and Mary were so friendly and welcoming. The house itself is absolutely beautiful and spacious, with the most amazing views. The huge Christmas tree in the living room was a big hit with the kids! The bedrooms were nice and big, and having en-suites in all of them was great. The garden was enormous and we all enjoyed being able to access the shore line so easily. We definitely hope to be back :)

A wonderful time in Ballyvaughan. The perfect property

Seamus and Mary have the most magnificent house within a short walk of Ballyvaughan. Five excellent bedrooms, the ideal kitchen/dining area and a most comfortable lounge. The views are stunning, at all times of the day with the tide in and out and the horizon of the Mamturks and Twelve Pins across the bay. Unbeatable.

Family wedding/holiday

Fantastic property, beautiful setting and Seamus is a fantastic host. chosen as plenty of bathrooms for 7 adults going to wedding. Unfortunately one shower was disconnected and we had problems with hot water in all the others and had to rely on one electric shower for all of us . The Wi-Fi was dreadful , not good if your relying on it for work. I would still recommend this house as long as your not relying on Wi-Fi .

Amazing location and lots of space

The location of the house is amazing, with a little flaggy shore at the end of the garden and very close to the village. There was lots of space for our big group. The kitchen and living room are brilliant spaces and the views are wonderful. Overall the bedrooms were great, but just one which was a bit damp.

A family (8 adults & 5 children) weekend break in Mid Feb 2020.

Lisheen House provided plenty of space for all 13 of us without ever feeling crowded. The openplan kitchen, dining and family room was perfect for meal times and relaxing in front of the huge firestove either playing board games or watching a movie with the kids. The upstairs lounge with the smaller stove lent itself to quieter more relaxed atmosphere for later in the evenings - excellent. The bedrooms were spacious with comfortable beds. There is a pub/sea food restaurant about 100m down the street at the pier, which we visited on several occasions over the 3 days. Although Storm Dennis was also visiting Clare, at the same time, we did manage visits to the Cliffs of Moher, Galway City and local walks. All in all a great time had by all at Lisheen House. Seamus Marlborough, our host, was very responsive with any requests before our visist and was friendly and welcoming on our arrival and took the time to go through all the key info regarding house facilities and local amenities. I would definitely stay at Lisheen House again if visiting Co.Clare in the future.

Fantastic house in fantastic location.

Our group has stayed in houses all around Ireland over 10 years and we universally agreed that this was the best we have ever stayed in. Comfortable, well equipped, beautiful gardens in a stunning location and a pleasant host. I highly recommend this property for anyone in Ireland looking for a fantastic break in a beautiful location or any visitors to Ireland who want a comfortable stay with incredible views. 5 stars all the way!

Super house & location

We rented Sycamore House for one week, shared between 2 families, one from Dublin, other from Paris. Kids ranged from 1year to 17 years. Everyone loved the house, plenty of space for all, huge kitchen to accommodate us all & the most magnificent views over Galway Bay. This house ticked all the boxes, and importantly was only a quick stroll into the village in the evening. Would definitely come back & recommend to all.

Amazing family stay

We had such a brilliant stay here. We were 7 adults and one baby and it was so comfortable with so much room. There are enough double bedrooms each with an en suite to make sure everyone has space, and the kitchen space was perfect for family meals. Being near the water and ballyvaughan village was great, but the best part in November was the lovely stove and comfortable sitting room to hang out in at the end of the day. 10/10 stay, we can't wait to stay again sometime.

Beautiful property, gorgeous views, lovely host!

Our stay was short but sweet! It was our last couple of nights in a nearly two week trip and provided the perfect setting to do some sightseeing and then come back to relax and enjoy the view. Seamus gave us a warm welcome, and his suggestion to drive the coastal route back from the Cliffs of Moher provided a beautiful memory. Thank you for a lovely stay!

About the host

Host profile image
I was raised on a dairy farm that was unique in that we processed and packaged the milk ourselves and distributed it throughout much of County Clare. We sold that side of the business in 1998 but we still live on the farm where we now raise beef cattle. When I married my wife Mary, we built a new home on the farm and since then we totally renovated the old farm house I grew up in and started doing self catering. We now have three beautiful homes in different locations for self catering and enjoy meeting new faces all the time. We have made a lot of new friends over the years ,some of them return on a regular basis. When the opportunity arises we enjoy having a good chat over a glass of wine or a pint of Guinness with our guests.
Seamus & Mary Marlborough

Why they chose this property

When the site that this house sits on which is over one and a half acres in area came on the market in 2002, we saw an opportunity to change our lifestyle. Even though we were no longer processing milk, we were still producing it and selling it to a large processor. At this stage we needed a change and decided if we accuire the site and secure planning to build on it, we would stop milk production and concentrate on self catering. To get a site with access onto the shoreline is very unique in Ireland. We paid dearly for it , but after employing a good architect , we ended up with an excellent end product specifically designed for self catering

What makes this property unique

The best thing about this house is its location. From the moment you enter the front door , you have views of the ocean and when you stand at the front door and look out you have views of the Burren Hills. Another benefit is that it is less than a five minute walk into the picturesque village of Ballyvaughan.
The house itself is a unique desigh with a great sense of space and comfort.
