Fantastic property, exactly as described online and in previous reviews. The space is cozy and well decorated so you feel like you're at home. The hot tub is a nice bonus. I would absolutely return.
This place was great! We got a list of recommendations that was awesome. We only stayed for a couple days, but tried a couple of them while we were in town. The place was clean and well maintained. We also really enjoyed the hot tub after walking around Portland.
The stay was amazing. The place was on a nice quiet street and the driveway was big enough for our rental car the living area, kitchen bathroom and the whole upstairs being a lounge area/bedroom was just amazing. Perfect space for two adult adults exploring Portland Maine. Would definitely return!
We loved this home…..very comfortable and in a very convenient location. We would have liked to enjoyed the patio more, but the early fall weather was a bit cool. Don’t be daunted by the upstairs bedroom, it’s very spacious and the stairs were deep and wide, solid and super easy to maneuver (we are 70!). Absolutely would stay again.
We had a great time staying at the cottage! It was the perfect space for our needs and had everything we needed. The list of recommendations was a great boon for us as well! Dave was communicative prior to our arrival with info about everything we needed.
Wonderful location. House was very cute and perfect for a couple or small family. Plenty to do on the area. Shared property with 2 other rentals but not an inconvenience or awkward at all. Very clean and cozy.
Dave was easy to reach and answered all questions quickly. House was centrally located and close to all things we chose to do. We didn’t use the hot tub but it was there if we chose to.
We had such a lovely time here. Dave was responsive and helpful- his list of recommendations for Portland is not to be missed! The cottage is adorable and had everything we need. The hot tub was great. Overall it was wonderful!

I'm sorry to hear Stephen had a bad experience during his visit. To clarify, I was staying in the main house (across the courtyard from the cottage) doing upkeep on a separate unit during the week of Stephan's visit, but was certainly not staying in the same unit as these guests. The purpose of my visit was to renovate the other unit, which had been recently vacated by a long-term tenant. During my visit, I was friendly to these guests and even offered suggestions on where to eat, and tips about getting around Portland, etc. If my presence doing work in and around the property that week distracted from Stephen's visit I do apologize to him and his guest. I do not live at the property and only visit a few weeks out of the year so I do think this review was a bit unfair and inaccurate but I do recognize that guests do not wish to be distracted by an owner's presence at a vacation property and I will make every effort in the future to avoid distracting my guests during my brief annual visits. At the end of the day, I think the excellent historical reviews on this property speak for themselves.
I was drawn to this for the yard. The lights, fire pit and hot tub were perfect for our family to spend time with each other so we didn't have to go to a bar or restaurant. The inside has almost a little industrial vibe. Great location to the market, coffee, shops etc and easily walk to Back Cove. I would definitely stay here again when back in the area to visit family.
We stayed in Portland without a car and this was such a great location, we were able to walk to restaurants and the farmer's market. It's close enough to town to get around easily. The cottage is super cute, we enjoyed a rainy night there doing a puzzle. I will say that the bedroom is a bit bright on those long summer days! Bring a sleep mask if you're sensitive. Overall really lovely and we enjoyed our time there.
We loved staying at Dave's place. Despite only being one bedroom, there was adequate sleeping space for four adults. The space was thoughtfully designed to maximize the limited square footage and did not feel cramped at all. The neighbors in the main house were quite friendly (especially their dog) and gave some good recommendations for things to do nearby. A nice quiet neighborhood. We did not use the hot tub, but it would have been a great feature in the colder months. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a weekend getaway in beautiful Portland, Maine!
We liked this cosy place near Back Cove. It was the perfect location to see Portland or to go on walks along the cove. The bed is upstairs and we found the sleeping loft very pleasant. The kitchen was well outfitted and everything worked. There’s a small living room (which include a decent guitar and ukelele in playable condition—I enjoyed playing them) with a comfortable couch and a TV, and lots of windows.
I thought a lot of attention was given to making this a comfortable space. F.ex upstairs there’s some simple convenient storage space for clothes, a small desk, and an exercise bike.
The only minus is that the sleeping loft is upstairs and the bathroom is downstairs. A small inconvenience.
This location is near everything we needed: entertainment, groceries, pharmacy and food. It is close to downtown while maintaining a neighborhood vibe. The apartment is perfect for a couple, although there is sleeping for plenty more. The seating area is comfortable with blankets to cuddle up in on a rainy afternoon. The kitchen and dining area is small but met all of our needs while saving us some money. Nice bathroom with a roomy, stocked shower. The air system kept the temperature comfortable. The upstairs bedroom is spacious with a small desk to work from and an exercise area with some equipment, including yoga mats. The hot tub was a great way to wind down from our daily adventures. We didn’t not have any maintenance concerns, and Dave was quick to respond to any questions we had. Being able to park in the driveway was a nice perk. Nearby trails and downtown Portland kept us busy and made for amazing memories. 5 stars!

About the host
Hosted by Dave F.
Hi, I'm Dave. I am a writer, musician and part-time college professor. I split my time between my home state of California and Maine - my other favorite state. I have rental properties in Portland, ME and Monson, ME (near Moosehead Lake) as well as in Huntington Beach, CA. I've lived all my life in California but spent many memorable summers in Maine at our family camp in Monson. I was recently approved by the City of Portland for short term rentals, which I've made available beginning in May 2023. And by the way, I have connected up with some FANTASTIC caretakers in both Monson and Portland, so you can expect both properties to be well taken care of and in great shape when you arrive, with "boots on the ground" if you need any help during your stay. And I'm always just a text away.
Why they chose this property
The charming cottage is in the Oakdale neighborhood of Portland, located one block from the University of Southern Maine. It is the closest neighborhood not actually in downtown, which provides the best of both worlds. It is a very safe and clean area without the noise and parking hassles of downtown yet just a short and pleasant walk (~20 minutes) to most spots in the city (or a 5 minute drive or Uber/Lyft ride), including Old Port and the bustling (and awesome) Congress Street area.
The cottage is just a few blocks from the lovely Back Cove (the large lagoon in the center of Portland), with the Baxter Blvd walking trail that winds around the full cove - a great walk or jogging destination! You're also just a few blocks from Deering Oaks Park and an additional short walk to the Western Promenade (a nice elevated park adjacent to a historic mansion neighborhood, with views of the Fore River and nice walking trails). I have many more suggestions if you don't know the City - and will share a list and a walking map once you register.
What makes this property unique
The neighborhood also has its own desirable hot spots within a few blocks from the cottage, including the awesome Rose Foods (with great NY bagel sandwiches and coffee), Proper Cup (excellent coffee and chill space), Great Lost Bear (a unique alehouse with HUGE assortment of beers/cocktails and great pub food), Bayou Kitchen (funky cajun breakfast joint), etc., and, of course, the legendary Holy Donut (worth the hype!) is a short walk away past the University and Deering Oaks Park. (This is the OG shop at 194 Park Ave - not the one with the crazy lines on Commercial Street in Old Port!) There are also some fantastic restaurants for foodies in the immediate neighborhood, including Woodford Food and Beverage (a James Beard winner - don't miss it!), the Knotted Apron (small open kitchen with fantastic food), and Tipo (amazing wood fired pizza and Italian food) to name just a few of my favorites nearby.
