About this property

Grammy's Lake House on Lake Pocotopaug

Summary:

Some places just feel like home. Grammy's Lake House on Lake Pocotopaug is one of them — a 100-year-old lakefront home with a private dock, wraparound porch, and rocking chairs waiting for you. Coffee's on. The lake is right there. Come slow down.

3 bedrooms, private dock, kayaks, game shed, grill, and a porch where the sunrise stops you cold. Perfect for families, reunions, and weekend escapes in Connecticut's most scenic lake town.

The Space:

Grammy's Lake House sleeps 7 across 3 spacious bedrooms, each with a queen bed and lake views that make it hard to leave in the morning. Extra sleeping options — a pullout sofa, air mattresses, and a cot — mean everyone stays comfortable no matter the crew.

But the real magic happens outside.

Morning starts on your favorite front porch. Coffee in hand, rocking chair beneath you, Lake Pocotopaug stretched out in front of you catching the early light. No agenda. No rush. Just the water, the birds, and the kind of quiet that reminds you why you left home in the first place. Grammy took her coffee here every single morning — and once you do it once, you'll understand why.

When everyone's ready to move, the private dock is calling. Launch the kayaks, jump in for a swim, or just sit with your feet over the edge and watch the lake do its thing.

Come evening, the massive back deck becomes the heart of the house. Fire up the propane grill, pull up to the 8-foot picnic table, and eat outside under the open sky the way summer meals were meant to be eaten. Adirondack chairs circle the fire pit for when dinner turns into stories, stories turn into s'mores, and nobody wants the night to end.

The game shed keeps the fun going all day — cornhole, bocce, frisbees, and more waiting for whoever wants to play. Nearly an acre of open yard gives the kids room to roam and the adults room to breathe.

Inside, the fully stocked kitchen is ready for everything from lazy waffle breakfasts to full holiday dinners. The large dining room table fits the whole group. The living room has board games, streaming on every TV, and enough cozy seating that rainy days feel like a gift.

3 bedrooms. A dock. A fire pit. A game shed. A porch that'll ruin all other porches for you. Grammy built something special here — and she'd love knowing you're enjoying every inch of it.

Guest Access:

Grammy's Lake House is yours to enjoy fully — inside and out. Here's everything included in your stay:

Inside the home, guests have full access to all three floors — every bedroom, bathroom, the living room, sitting areas, dining room, and fully stocked kitchen. The washer and dryer are available for your use, and laundry detergent is provided.

On the porch and deck, the wraparound front porch with rocking chairs and the massive back deck with the 8-foot picnic table, Adirondack chairs, grill, and fire pit are all yours from the moment you arrive to the moment you check out.

In the yard, nearly an acre of open space is available for games, lounging, and letting the kids run. The game shed — stocked with cornhole, bocce, frisbees, and more — is open for guests to use anytime.

On the water, guests have access to the private dock and the canoe and kayaks for paddling on Lake Pocotopaug. We just ask one simple, non-negotiable rule: anyone on the water or using the dock must wear a life jacket at all times. Life jackets are provided on property. The lake is beautiful — and we want you to enjoy it safely, just the way Grammy always insisted.

Parking is plentiful with ample space in the driveway for multiple vehicles — no stress, no permits needed.

What's reserved for ownership use: the basement, attic, garage, and one storage shed are private and not accessible to guests.

When in doubt about anything during your stay — just message us. We're always close by and happy to help make your time at Grammy's everything it should be.

The Neighborhood:

NEIGHBORHOOD OVERVIEW — Grammy's Lake House

East Hampton, Connecticut is one of those places that still feels like small-town America — and that's exactly the point.

You're sitting on Lake Pocotopaug, a stunning 512-acre freshwater lake that's been the heart of this community for generations. The name comes from the Algonquian phrase for "lake with pierced rock," and on a clear morning when the mist is still sitting on the water, you'll understand why people have been coming here for over a century.

Right down the road: Sears Park

The town's crown jewel is just minutes away. Sears Park sits right on the lake and features a sandy beach, boat launch, pickleball courts, tennis courts, basketball courts, and pavilions — all brand new and beautifully kept. In summer it comes alive with families, live music, and the kind of easy, unhurried energy that makes you want to stay another week. For families with kids, the park also runs Sears Park Summer Camp (grades K–7) from June through August — supervised swimming with ARC-certified lifeguards, field trips, special guests, and full days of fun. Little ones have their own "Little Wonders" camp. It's right down the road and genuinely fantastic.

Hit the trails

The Air Line State Park Trail starts practically in town and stretches 50+ miles across eastern Connecticut. It's flat, scenic, and gorgeous in every season — walkers, joggers, cyclists, and families all share it peacefully. In fall, the foliage along the trail is the kind of thing people drive hours for. For more adventurous hikers, Hurd State Park (stunning Connecticut River views, mountain biking, picnicking), Salmon River State Forest (the legendary 6.9-mile Blue-Blazed trail plus the historic Comstock Covered Bridge), and Meshomasic State Forest are all within 15 minutes. AirLine Cycles in downtown East Hampton rents bikes and runs group trail rides if you want a guide.

On the water

The Happiest Paddler offers kayak and paddleboard rentals right on the lake for guests who want to explore beyond the dock. The lake is perfect for swimming, paddling, and lakeside lounging — just note that a CT fishing license is required if you plan to cast a line (bass, trout, and perch are well stocked).

Eating and drinking

Downtown East Hampton is 2 miles away and genuinely charming. Favorites include Angelico's Lake House Restaurant (waterfront dining, tiki bar, live music — a summer staple), the Lakeside Bar & Grill (chef-driven menu with bold flavors), Black Walnut Bakery (get there early before the pastries sell out), Rossini's for homemade Italian, and Po's Rice and Spice — voted best Thai food in Connecticut. For a longer evening out, Arrigoni Winery is 20 minutes away for live music and sunset tastings.

Day trips worth making

Brownstone Exploration & Discovery Park in nearby Portland is an adventure park in a retired quarry — cliff jumping, zip-lining, water obstacles — perfect for older kids and adults. The Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center ("The Kate") in Old Saybrook hosts live music, indie films, and theater about 35 minutes away. Goodspeed Opera House is a beloved Connecticut institution for Broadway-style shows. And in fall, Pumpkintown USA just outside town is a family tradition — pumpkin-headed characters, hayrides, and all the New England autumn magic you came for.

A note from Grammy

East Hampton isn't loud. It's not a tourist trap. There's no neon or noise. What there is — is a lake that goes quiet at dusk, a Main Street that still feels like 1955, trails that go on forever, and neighbors who wave. Grammy loved it here for a reason. We think you will too.

Getting Around:

You can park for free in the driveway, on-site. Best way to get around is by car or bike, while walking is also used by folks in the neighborhood.

Other Things to Note:

Grammy's Lake House is a 100-year-old historic home — her character, creaks, and charm are part of what makes her special. Guests who love authenticity, history, and a genuinely lived-in feeling tend to never want to leave.

The front porch is the heart of the house. Rocking chairs, panoramic lake views, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think. Grammy's favorite spot — and it'll probably become yours too.

If your stay includes a Tuesday, please bring the trash and recycling bins to the street in the morning. Green bin for trash, blue for recycling — both by the garage.

For safety: three exterior security cameras are on property — rear driveway, side of house, and front door.

Note on bathrooms: the home has 2 full bathrooms with showers upstairs and 1 half-bath (toilet only) downstairs.

Interaction with Guests:

We're hands-off so you can fully unwind — but always just a message away. Expect resonably fast responses and everything arranged before you arrive so you can walk in and immediately feel at home. Grammy would have had it no other way.

Front porch view is picturesque

Very comfortable rockers and Adirondack chairs make it easy to relax and enjoy the lake view. Our bed was comfortable, and Nile supplied all we needed with linens and soaps. We appreciated all the space and large dining table. Lake is beautiful. Very enjoyable stay. Exceptional communication with our host.

Spacious, with well supplied kitchen and comfortable beds. We enjoyed gazing at the lake from second floor rooms and front porch. We drove to downtown East Hampton which is a pleasant throwback to small town America of the '50s..

So easy and charming

This was a fantastic getaway! The house is terrific and well-kept. Three full bedrooms (with one bathroom en suite and another on the same floor). Kitchen well-equipped. Great outdoor areas. Coffee on the porch every morning. We grilled one night. Communication with Nile very fast, always helpful. We were quite happy here for four nights.

Thanks for the feedback Dorothy. We take your feedback seriously and since your stay, we got a new bistro table and chairs for the kitchen, swapped the front porch chairs for high quality and durable rocking chairs! We even bought Adirondack chairs for Lounging on the back deck. We also took the older chairs and furniture on the deck and bought and swapped them out for a high quality Uline 8’ picknick table! No more chairs everywhere! Just one picknick table that can accolade 10 at a time. We also changed the orientation of the bed in the primary bedroom, with two end tables now from the bed you can see the lake and we installed a 65” TV in the bedroom! Thanks again for the feedback. I heard you and made these updates within 48 hours of your stay!!! :)

Wonderful stay

We participated in a family and friends stay at Lake Pocotopaug. This is a very comfortable home to stay in. Air conditioning works beautifully. A nice size kitchen. Comfortable bedrooms upstairs. The porch swing on the front porch with a view of the lake is just the best! Our grandchildren loved jumping off the dock into the lake. The large deck allowed for our extended group to visit and feel comfortable here.

Thank you very much, Norma. We had a blast getting to know you so far in advance. You were so detailed and booked a year out, you forced me to upgrade my home to make sure I delivered for you and your family. I pushed to get a new deck, which I'm glad you loved and also I upgraded my dock so that guests can swim in the lake. A big thank you for pushing me. We look forward to seeing you and your family again in the future!

Overall a nice stay

Overall a fine stay, it was nice to have all the space a home provides when traveling a week for work, I would consider staying here again. It is an old home and comes with all the creaks and noises, it took awhile but I did get used to it. The driveway is a bit steep/slippery in winter, need some salt on hand for that. And while it was no problem for us it's worth mentioning all bedrooms are upstairs and being an old home the stairs are narrow and steep so not for all travelers.

Linens, Mlaster Bed and Furnishings could use update

Beautiful turn of the century house. Cozy, but there needs to be updated blinds in the tv room. Windows in bedrooms should be blackout curtains, bathroom doesn’t have any curtains/blinds. Door entrance has no blinds. Couch has big rip under cover. Bathroom sink is clogged.Master bed could use a better mattress and frame. Pillows had stains. Poison ivy plant at entrance to driveway.

About the host

Hosted by Nile

Host profile image
This was my grandmother's beloved lake home, and I'm honored to share it with guests the way she shared it with our family for generations. Grammy had a gift for making everyone feel welcome — whether it was through her famous recipe book, a rocking chair chat on the front porch, or a home-cooked meal after a day on the lake.

I've kept those traditions alive, adding modern comforts while preserving the heart of her home. From the moment you step onto the covered porch and see the lake glistening beyond, I hope you feel the same warmth, love, and connection to this place that I do.

Grammy's Lake House sits on Lake Pocotopaug — a stunning 512-acre freshwater lake in the heart of East Hampton, Connecticut. The house itself is over 100 years old, full of character, history, and the kind of charm that only comes with time. It is not a hotel. It is not a new build. It is a real family home, lived in and loved for generations, and that is exactly what makes it special.

I grew up spending summers here. I know every creak in the floorboards, every sunrise angle from the front porch, and exactly which rocking chair has the best view of the water. When Grammy passed, keeping this home alive and full of laughter felt like the most meaningful thing I could do to honor her. Every guest who walks through that door becomes part of that story.

As your host, I am committed to making your stay exceptional. I respond quickly, I am always close by, and I genuinely care that your time here becomes one of those trips your family talks about for years. That is not a marketing line — it is just how Grammy raised us.

Come slow down. The lake and the home are waiting.

Nile, Grammy's Grandson

Why they chose this property

Here is the updated version with Grammy's cardinals woven in naturally:

Grammy always said she picked this home because it feels like you're on vacation every day. Perched on a gentle hill overlooking Lake Pocotopaug, the house catches the breeze off the water all summer long and the sunrise every single morning without fail. I have never once gotten tired of that view — and neither have our guests.

East Hampton is one of those rare Connecticut towns that still feels like itself. Two miles from a Main Street that looks like 1955, surrounded by state parks, hiking trails, and one of the most beautiful freshwater lakes in New England. Lake Pocotopaug spans 512 acres and has been drawing families to its shores for over a century. Grammy was smart enough to plant her roots right here.

What I love most about this area is how much there is to do without ever feeling rushed. Walk down to our brand-new private dock for a swim or a canoe ride. Drive five minutes to Sears Park for beach days, tennis, pickleball, and basketball. Hike the Air Line State Park Trail through covered bridges and over historic viaducts. Eat lobster rolls at Jessica's Garden Shack, waterfront dinners at Angelico's, or homemade pasta at Rossini's. In fall, watch the maples turn brilliant orange right over the water. In winter, the lake goes quiet and the house becomes your own private sanctuary.

Grammy had a special love for cardinals. She kept bird feeders on the property her whole life and the cardinals still come — every morning, without fail, like they know this place belongs to them too. Binoculars are provided so you can watch the lake birds, the herons, the hawks, and of course Grammy's cardinals from the comfort of the front porch. It is one of those quiet little things guests mention long after they leave.

The neighborhood is peaceful, friendly, and genuinely beautiful in every season. Grammy chose well.

What makes this property unique

Grammy's Lake House is more than just a vacation rental — it is a legacy of love, laughter, and lakeside living that has been part of our family for over 50 years. There is simply nothing else like it on Lake Pocotopaug.

What makes it unique starts with the feeling. The moment you pull up that driveway and step onto the covered front porch, something shifts. The lake is right there. The rocking chairs are waiting. The cardinals are at the feeders. The world slows down. Guests tell us they feel it within minutes of arriving — that rare, deep exhale that only happens when a place genuinely feels like home.

The house sits on nearly an acre of land, elevated above the lake with sweeping views from almost every room. Three spacious bedrooms, each with a queen bed and lake views. A fully stocked kitchen built for real family meals — waffle maker, air fryer, cookbooks, the works. A massive back deck with an 8-foot picnic table, Adirondack chairs, propane grill, and a fire pit for when the stars come out. A private dock with a canoe and kayaks for exploring 512 acres of pristine Connecticut lake. A game shed stocked with cornhole, bocce, spikeball, and more. Binoculars on the porch for bird watching — Grammy kept feeders out her whole life and the cardinals still come every morning like clockwork.

But honestly? What makes Grammy's truly unique is Grammy herself. Her photo is on the wall. Her recipe book is in the kitchen. Her rocking chair is on the porch. Her spirit is in every corner of this home. You are not renting a property. You are being welcomed into a family legacy by a grandson who grew up here and wants you to love it as much as we do.

There is nowhere else on this lake — or anywhere — quite like it.
