About this property

Lovely 17th Century Townhouse in the Historic Centre of Uzes

'Maison Sept' is a spacious early 17th century French townhouse, located in the historic centre of Uzès. It is approximately 100 steps to the Place aux Herbes, the lively central hub of Uzès – a beautiful large square filled with plane trees, a fountain and wonderful shops and outdoor cafes. It is also the location of the twice weekly morning market where you can stock up on local produce, cheeses, meats, flowers, spices, and regional crafts.

Maison Sept is located on a narrow, cobbled medieval street, lined with town houses on both sides. There is an art gallery right across the street, and just a few doors down, a bakery - essential for those morning croissants. Two doors down on our side is a lovely inn with a wonderful restaurant.

You can enter Maison Sept through two doorways, one directly into the kitchen, a typical south of France entrance, and the other into a foyer at the side of the house. The house dates from the very beginning of the 17th century. Over the years it has been an inn twice, and has housed amongst its various occupants, a notary, a doctor and a maker of stockings. It has been expanded over the centuries and has been meticulously restored, combining ancient details with all the modern conveniences. It is an extremely comfortable and easy house to live in.

The kitchen is well stocked and modern, and contains all the requirements, whether you like to just make coffee, or cook elaborate gourmet meals. There is a gas cook top, electric wall oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave oven, blender and food processor, nice stainless steel All Clad cookware and several types of coffee makers (we know what’s important!).

At the back of the house, the living room opens onto a private walled terrace. It is cool and shady in the heat of summer, a private oasis where you can have breakfast or a lovely al fresco dinner.

An ancient stone spiral staircase winds its way through the 4 stories of the house. There are four bedrooms, two with queen beds, one with a double bed, and one with a pair of twin beds. The beds are extremely comfortable, and the rooms are furnished with French antiques and antique tribal carpets. Two of the bedrooms have balconies that open onto the courtyard below. There are two full bathrooms and a powder room.

On the third floor you can unwind in the family room, equipped with internet TV and DVD player. Off this room is a mezzanine that serves as an office and is set up with wireless Internet. You have use of the full laundry room, with both a washer and dryer. You are welcome to use the unlimited long distance telephone service to many countries worldwide.

Uzes is a beautiful, magical town to explore and enjoy. It is also a wonderful base from which to explore the region. There are many wonderful Languedoc and Provence destinations within a short day trip drive. We would strongly encourage you to plan your stay to start on Friday or earlier in the week, if possible, so that you can be here to experience the market on Saturday morning. It is one of the most extensive markets in the south of France, and a lovely experience.

Bliss in Uzes
This home was perfection in a beautiful town in Provence. Full of character and appointed with love. We were a family of three adult couples and were well catered for with two bathrooms, two lounges and a well supplied kitchen/dining room. An historic building, it is filled with light and warmth. Very tastefully decorated, very French and very comfortable. The street is quiet and private, and joins the main road that encircles the town, full of cafes, boulangeries and boutiques. Just steps away are restaurants and a lovely bakery just on the corner. We could not have been happier and will remember our time there with real affection.

A great Christmas house
We came here for Christmas this year and it was exactly as we’d hoped. The house made for a perfect Christmas house – warm and cosy and full of character. The owners had very kindly left us a tree, which really added to the festive feel. We loved being just a hop from the central square and its apparently endless Christmas market. The weather was perfect – crisp and clear and barely a drop of rain. The house was fabulous – well-furnished and equipped, but its real beauty was the location. It was slap-bang in the middle of Uzes, with all its lovely shops and restaurants. There was a baker’s shop almost on the doorstep and gorgeous country walks down by the aqueduct. I would recommend it unreservedly, except that we’d love to come again and don’t want too much competition!

Great location in a spectacular part of France
Comfortable, lovely home in a beautiful town. We loved exploring Uzes and going to the markets, as well as traveling the area in all directions. This region of France is beautiful and interesting historically, geologically, culturally, and agriculturally. We spent two weeks and every day was unique and wonderful.

We live in Canada but love to spend time in France because of the wonderful lifestyle, the people, the language and the history.

Why they chose this property

We decided to buy our home in Uzes because we fell in love with the town on one of our antiques sourcing trips and knew we had to spend as much time here as possible.

What makes this property unique

We love living in a small town in France. We have gotten to know many of our neighbours, who are very friendly, and we enjoy being able to go to any number of restaurants, art galleries, beautiful boutiques and a lovely twice a week market, just outside our door.
