Welcome to the Captain's Cottage, located in the heart of the East End Historic district of Galveston Island. A 1900's storm survivor and escaping damage by Hurricane Ike's devastation, the Captain's Cottage is a testament to Galveston's resilience as a coastal hub. Built in the early 1870's by Captain Rufus Jameson, a wealthy shipping merchant, it still contains original features such as the hardwood floors as well as remodeled features and furnishings to catch the historical essence of the home. At the same time, much attention has been given to providing modern conveniences for you during your stay.
Upon entering the Cottage, you will find a wonderful living room tastefully decorated and completed with leather sofas and a flat screen TV. Flowing from the living room into the dining area, you have a counter height table with seating for eight. Our spacious kitchen, perfect for any size group, has granite counter tops, a refrigerator with water and ice dispenser, microwave, and a gas stove/oven that includes a center grill. The kitchen is stocked with plenty of dishes and utensils for your cooking needs. Of course for those who enjoy a cup of coffee, a coffee pot and supplies are provided for your stay as well as multiple other kitchen appliances. The kitchen has an additional table that seats four and stools at the large island for comfortable socializing.
On the main floor you will also find the master bedroom graced with a king size bed and flat screen TV. The connected master bath has a claw foot tub/shower and an antique bureau sink/mirror. A second guest bedroom located off the kitchen includes a queen size bed and flat screen TV. Another full size bathroom is just around the corner from the second bedroom. If you travel up the main wooden staircase in the living room you will find a spacious beach themed bedroom and bathroom on the second floor. This bedroom has a queen size bed, and the bathroom has a shower stall. The fourth and final bedroom, is up a staircase at the rear of the house in a loft style bedroom. It contains two twin beds. Additional bedding is provided on our sleeper sofa in the living room, which folds out into a full queen size sleeper.
Many come to the island hoping to enjoy the great weather the coast offers, especially those southern breezes. A wicker furniture set on the front porch will allow you to enjoy your spot in a historic neighborhood with roses and oleanders blooming in our front flower beds. Or if you prefer more privacy, our backyard is a great place to relax with well manicured yard and flower beds, back porch with patio furniture, or a ground level patio with patio table and grill for dining in the outdoors. A favorite feature of our home of course is the large private hot tub on the back patio. Up to six people can relax and enjoy!
The Captain's Cottage is perfectly situated on Galveston Island for whatever kind of getaway you have in mind. Whether a family vacation, family reunion or special event, couple's getaway, or group occasion it is convenient to enjoy all Galveston has to offer. A quick drive, less than a mile, will get you to the Seawall where the beach awaits you. It is also just 8 blocks to the historic Strand district and adjacent cruise ship terminal area. Many unique restaurants and some of the best on the Island are within a pleasant two block walk. If you are interested in the historic side of Galveston, Bishop's Palace, Moody Mansion, and large number of the historic homes on the Galveston Home Tour are right in our neighborhood, as well as various artist carved statues from the bases of large majestic trees destroyed by Hurricane Ike. Moody Gardens, Schlitterbahn, and Galveston's newest attraction - Pleasure Pier are other places you may want to take in while visiting Galveston.

The property was beautiful and honestly the pictures did not do it justice. Plenty of room for our family stay. The kitchen in Patio we’re perfect for our family talks and laughter. The owner of the property was so kind and friendly. 10/10 would definitely stay here again!
Home was clean, and welcoming. Appreciated that the air was already set to a decent temp and not either way too hot or freezing cold! Hot tub was all prepped, hot and clean! (Hubby is very particular so this was a huge deal!). Beds were rather hard. A foam mattress topper under the mattress pad would be fantastic as everyone in the party did complain of aching backs.
There was plenty of space and the kitchen was well equipped. Very important - the beds were all in excellent condition. One change that could help those of us with older backs would be to replace the really soft couch with something firm; a love seat or a couple of chairs. This is a very nice property.
Property was in a great location. We were able to easily walk to many attractions in historic Strand area, and it was a 5 minute drive to the beach. The house itself had everything we needed to cook our meals for the majority of our stay. We had originally planned to have six of us in the house (4 adults and 2 children), but 2 ended up not being able to attend. I would say we had way more room than we needed for just 4 people, but if we came down again with a larger party, it would be just right.
We had a fantastic time. Everything was as described. Perfect set up for large Family. Love the fenced in backyard. Had extras such as playpen and highchair. so close to all the activities we wanted to go out and do. My only complaint would be that parking sometimes was difficult to get close to the house on the street. Most of our stay that wasn’t a problem. If we visit the Galveston area again I hope this location is open!
We enjoyed the stay. There was plenty of room for everyone. The only pow as that the pots and pans were dirty. I don’t think it’s wise to have the renters put away the dishes. Other places have you to put dirty dishes in the dishwasher. That way they can check them before the next renter comes in. Otherwise it was great!
It was definitely roomy for the 10 of us. We enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub and it's close to everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Beds were definitely comfortable and we would mos definitely stay here again.
This house is much bigger than we thought from the online listing. There were 8 of us and we never felt crowded or cramped. House was beautiful, clean, comfortable & really well stocked. We loved the location & the hot tub was nice after a long day of adventure. Julie was a perfect host & we would definitely consider staying at the Captains Cottage again!
This house was in the perfect location! Close to the beach, delicious eateries, and easy to get to. Our party of 9 had plenty of room to visit and eat, even with 3 kids. Spacious back yard, which was ideal after a day at the beach. Highly recommend for any occasion!
We had or annual girls beach bash at the Captain's Cottage this year. The whole experience was amazing. The house was clean, bigger than we expected, and overall had a very comfy atmosphere. Neighbors were nice, and would recommend having one or two cars since parking is limited to the street. Home owner was very kind, and the house is just a short drive from the beach. There are a couple cute restaurants and cafes within walking distance. We will hopefully be back next year for the next beach bash!
Very comfortable stay for 6 adults. We loved having 3 separate bathrooms. The location was perfect for access to charming local restaurants and touring of the historic Strand and Eastern Seawall.
Be sure to bring your own Roku/streaming device as well as ice and bath soap/shampoos.
The owners are lovely people and we enjoyed celebrating July 4th in such a lovely home.
Everything about the stay and the owners have been above and beyond incredible! I Definitely highly recommend! Fits for families up to 10 and layout is just right! No complaints at all!
Clean and spacious. We loved having so many beds and an excellent kitchen!

We are the Ellis Family - Marty, Julie, Kylie & Clint. We are a family that enjoys traveling. From beaches to the mountains, national parks to museums, we love seeing and experiencing new places. Many times it is the recommendations of others that have led to great experiences in our travels such as kayaking in Homer, AK. Nothing beats an opportunity to leave it all behind and getaway together as a family! Our home in Galveston has allowed us to do that much more frequently.
Why they chose this property
The Ellis family visited the island, staying in the East End Historic District in 2008, before Hurricane Ike's devastation. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and started discussing the idea of owning our own family getaway. We returned to the island after Ike's devastation with the intent of looking into buying a home. Then we found our Captain's Cottage... newly restored and untouched by Ike, complete with an interesting history. We were hooked. Now we visit the island on a regular basis as a home away from home.
What makes this property unique
We love the unique experience of being surrounded by the beautiful and charming historical homes in our neighborhood. Our location centers us in all the activities we enjoy on the island from going to the beach just a short drive away, playing at Moody Gardens for the day, finding cool stores on the Seawall or the Strand, and then add in the benefits of great local restaurants within walking distance. The only thing remaining is to come home to relax and take a soak in the hot tub.
