Portside on Holmes Bay with ever-changing panoramic vistas of the Bold Coast.
Part of the charm of this recently renovated home is the breathtaking ever-changing panoramic seascapes. I love watching the tides ebb and flow, and the sea smoke dancing between the islands. In the morning, sit on the expansive porch with a cup of coffee or tea to watch lobster boats haul their traps. Then head out for a day trip. There are so many places locally to capture glimpses of how stunningly beautiful the bold coast of Maine is. There is a partial list provided below. After your day trip, enjoy preparing and cooking dinner on the propane grill on the porch. Have a fire in the pit at night where it feels like the stars are so close you could pluck one from the sky. To the left, the Cutler Towers glimmer red at night. Directly in front, the white light on Avery Rock spins around like clockwork to warn mariners of the ledges below. Maybe leave the windows open an inch at night to breathe in the crisp refreshing night air. And if you listen closely, you may be able to hear the sounds of the harbor seals.
Accessibility to the beach in front of the house is only 4 drives down on the right. You may not even see another person while you are there.
If exploring isn't your thing, getting lost in the beauty of reading a good book never disappoints.
There are so many historical places to see: the Gates House Museum in Machiasport, the Burnham Tavern Museum in Machias (find out how it was part of the Revolutionary War), President Roosevelt's summer home on Campobello Island, Lubec (the most easternmost land in the US, Quoddy Head lighthouse in Lubec, Roques Bluff Beach and State Park, whale watching tours out of Eastport, Bold Coast Trail hike in Cutler, along with local kayaking, golf courses, boating, four wheeling along the old railroad beds, fishing, Jasper Beach, renowned Helen's Restaurant (if you like raspberries, definitely get the pie!). Raye's Mustard Mill located in Eastport is the last working stone ground mustard mill in the US. Bartlett Maine Estate Winery is on the way to Winter Harbor, where you can rent bikes to explore the Schoodic Loop of Acadia National Park, or catch a ferry to Bar Harbor for the day. There are also Puffin boat tours that take you to one of the only nesting sites of the Atlantic Puffin in the US. On the weekends, there are vendors along the causeway in Machias selling anything from crab meat to locally grown veggies, to furniture and various flea market finds. This quintessential Downeast area is slower paced, like stepping back in time. For creature comforts, Machias does have a Mcdonald's, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Hannafords (for groceries), the famous Pat's Pizza, a Dunkin Donuts and several gas stations. However, the Machias area doesn't have a traffic light. People hold the door for you and say please and thank you. And people wave, sometimes with only one or two fingers, at you when they are driving. We like to call it the Downeast Wave. It is such an inviting area. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we do.

The property had a beautiful view and was in a nice neighborhood. The house was stocked with everything you could need, they thought of everything. It was also a great place for dogs.
The view from the back porch is amazing. We were able to sit around the firepit and enjoy the night sky. Within driving distance of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and the headquarters of Wreaths Across America.
Great place to stay while exploring Down East Maine
We enjoyed our stay at Portside on Holmes Bay. The views from the deck were incredible. Awesome bonus was being able to walk to the beach a few lanes up and explore at low tide. The one downside to this place is how close it is to the road, but it's not a terribly busy road and the traffic dies down at night leaving you with amazing peace and quiet. Sleeping with a window cracked to get that cool sea breeze heaven!
Most times you view a listing and are surprised when you arrive that it is not what it seemed. Not here! The home was exactly as pictured! The views were amazing and location was great! An hour from Eastport and Bar Harbor.
Great location situated between Cutler and Machias, with beautiful vista from the porch. Shopping, restaurants and amazing hiking trails within 10-20 minute drives. We had perfect weather for our stay and enjoyed morning coffee on the porch watching the lobster boats. The house is as described and had everything we needed. We enjoyed our 6 night stay, although we found the mattresses to be pretty uncomfortable. We only cooked breakfast, but there was a good array of pots, pans, and dishes, etc. We bought water, as the water from the spigot had a very distinct taste and smell (although potable). Communication was prompt and responsive.
We planned a trip to Downeast Maine and this home was the perfect place to hide away from the world and recharge. The home was exactly as described! The beach just down the road was a daily excursion where we hunted and found a lot of sea glass, kayaked, and climbed around the large rocks, boulders, and receding tides. We even saw a seal and heard some whales several times. My son (7) and niece(11) begged to go down multiple times per day! There were plenty options in the nearby town for dining and getting any necessities. Helen’s Restaurant really was every bit as incredible as described. We took several trips to places all within 30 minutes- Lubec, West Quoddy Head Lighthouse (a must see for incredible views,) and Moose Cove (another great little hike!) Then returned in the afternoon and evenings for a campfire and some card games. Watching the sunset off the back porch was breathtaking. The home was so cozy and truly felt like home. The road out front was a bit busier than we anticipated but it wasn’t a bother and the kiddos knew well enough to stay back. The windows let in a perfect breeze during the day and in the evenings that kept the house cool. We did speak with the homeowner, Julie, a few times and she was amazing, helpful, and so kind. We would not hesitate to stay here again and would absolutely recommend this property to anyone we know looking for somewhere in the future. Thank you for sharing your special place with us!
