~ ~ ~A Special Story about Mary's Porch~ ~ ~
In the early 1980s, Mary bought an old beach house with a welcoming porch. It was next to the old native burial ground, near the village, on the corner of May Joe and Oak. It was her stake. Even with its rich history, St. Simons was still a bit sleepy then. This was before the new bridge brought more active development. For nearly twenty years, Mary rented her little house to a local school teacher named Wanda. When Wanda retired and left St. Simons, Mary and her husband Roger planned their move. She imagined a new house to honor the welcoming porch of the old one. She preserved the front door and its creaky screen, and used foundation bricks to lay a walk to the street.
Around the time the new house was being built, George Dawes Green, a successful novelist living in New York City, publicly reminisced about his upbringing on St. Simons. He spoke of
gatherings on the porch at Wanda's place—and the moths that gathered round the light. The reminiscing inspired an international movement of storytelling called The Moth (and The Moth Story Hour). The story of those gatherings, and their inspiration for The Moth, is recounted in Emily Esfhani Smith's book, The Power of Meaning (a copy is in the house today, p. 100). The story has inspired us to name a room near the front door to its memory: "The Moth Room." The new porch, still between that old door and the street, remains a place of welcome, gathering, friendship, and peace.
Mary's porch. Wanda's porch. And for a few days, your porch. Enjoy.
