About this property
Cabin & Treehouse by Jay Cooke State Park / Duluth Trails
A fantastic, modern cabin on 5 private acres and your own custom treehouse with a bird's eye view over the trees! Right next to the beautiful Jay Cooke State Park and the St. Louis river, and only blocks to a dedicated bike path going 4 miles to Carlton or 15 miles to all of the restaurants, breweries, and activities in Duluth. Relax in a grove of towering pines with enough hammocks and swings for the whole family. Enjoy the fully enclosed screen porch, outdoor grill, fire ring, and dining area.
Your stay at Baumhaus includes the cabin AND a separate treehouse!
The custom treehouse built by the hosts and namesake of the property is an absolute treasure. It includes an outdoor deck and bar seating and an indoor hangout space with room for you to relax or nap in the loft net. The treehouse is a THREE SEASON space! Regrettably, if you visit from November to March, depending on the timing of winter storms, the treehouse will be closed and not accessible. The treehouse has no power or heating, and the ladder would be icy and unsafe in winter. Just remember, you can always come back during spring, summer, and fall! Message us if you want to plan a stay around the treehouse seasons!
Baumhaus cabin is a newly built, year-round, modern cabin with cozy and beautiful furnishings. The goal was comfort inside and connection to nature outside.
The open great room includes a fully supplied kitchen with quality appliances, a huge island work surface, and counter seating. The dining table can expand from 4 to 6 seats. The living room focal point can be the panoramic windows to the forest and ravine, the electric fireplace, or a smart TV.
There are 2 comfortable bedrooms with queen beds, luxury mattress toppers (one medium and one soft), and plenty of pillows.
The third "bedroom" is an upper level open loft with two additional full beds. Please note that the loft access stairs are steep and are similar to a loft ladder. The loft stairs may not be safe or accessible to young children or guests with mobility limitations.
The full bath has a shower and kid friendly tub, but big enough for adults. Try the heated washlet / bidet seat and see what everyone is raving about, or don't, that's OK too. The second half bath gives your group more room to get ready for your adventures.
The fully enclosed screen porch is a must for relaxing in Minnesota in the summer. Feel the breeze and hear the birds, and not the mosquitos.
The outdoor spaces include a deck dining table for 6, a picnic table perched on the edge of the ravine, a fire pit, wood pellet grill and smoker, and multiple hammocks, swings, and hanging chairs.
We hope you will get out into nature, but on those rainy days, we have fiber internet for the smart TV and wifi, and we also have a cell booster antennae inside (your cell signal will be stronger in the cabin than outside).
There is plenty of parking and FREE level 2 EV charging.
If you come prepared for adventures, you are in for a treat. There are endless opportunities for hiking, biking, skiing, boating, and sightseeing minutes away. Your hosts are always happy to make recommendations and will share a local trail guide. If you need some downtime, the property will not disappoint. Grab a blanket and enjoy some crisp evening air. Free fire wood at the fire ring. Games, puzzles, and kids toys are available. The living room has Sonos bluetooth speakers, and guests can use battery lanterns with built-in speakers to safely stargaze outside or keep the music going across the property.

Linens are free from fragrances and cleaning supplies meet the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) standards that protect against irritation. Our cleaning fee covers most of the actual cost of cleaning services and laundry and helps minimize cumbersome guest tasks. We ask for dishes to go in the dishwasher, games and toys to be put away, and any rearranged dining chairs to be returned. The outdoor spaces are fantastic and they are cleaned with the cabin, but expect that they may already have dust, pollen, leaves, etc. that guests may prefer to clean again with provided supplies.
You'll have our entire cabin and treehouse (spring to fall) which sits on 5 acres of land. There is a gravel driveway with a 2 car parking pad.
The property includes portions of "Hemlock Ravine" that are very steep and prone to erosion and landslides. The property line is not marked, and the adjacent state-owned Hemlock Ravine SNA has designated all land within the ravine to be a sanctuary that is off limits to the public to protect fragile soil and plants. Please respect private and protected state land - the ravine is off limits to guests at all times. "Flat" areas between the ravine and road are open to explore, and if you need rugged adventures, there are many trails and places to scramble at Jay Cooke State Park.
You will use a PIN code to open a keybox to obtain a door key and return the key to the keybox at checkout.
This cabin was designed and built specifically for use as a rental, and your hosts block off a few weeks a year to enjoy as well. While the rental includes the complete cabin, there are a few locked cabinets inside for the owners' belongings that are not accessible to guests.

About the host
Hosted by Cory Schaffhausen

Hi, I'm Cory. My wife, Allyson, and I purchased this vacant property in 2021 after making countless weekend trips to enjoy the trails and sights in northern Minnesota. It felt like this place was too great to keep to ourselves, and we are excited to share it with you. I'm a maker and DIYer, and building the treehouse has been one of my biggest projects. We are experts on kid friendly activities in the area and beyond.
Why they chose this property
This property is close to all of the outdoor activities we wanted. We love to hike, bike and ski. All of these activities, and more, are blocks away!
What makes this property unique
It has a treehouse! A *real* one that is supported by the trees, and you can even feel a little swaying when the trees move.
