Welcome to The Weathervane, a beautifully outfitted semi-oceanfront vacation home on the 4x4 Northern Outer Banks in Carova Beach, NC. This 3-bedroom, 1,536 sq ft reverse floor plan beach house sleeps 6 and features a brand new private pool, screened porch, and stunning ocean views — nestled between two wildlife preserves just 6.5 miles up the 4x4 beach. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required. Three-night stays available in spring and fall with flexible any-day check-in.
Bedrooms & Sleeping Arrangements
Three bedrooms sleep 6 guests: two queen bedrooms with memory foam beds, smart TVs, and private deck access, plus a third bedroom with a duo-bunk (double lower, twin upper, memory foam). Perfect for a small family or a couple looking to escape.
Private Pool & Outdoor Spaces
Take a dip in the brand new private pool, relax on the screened-in porch, or set up on the deck with your morning coffee and ocean views. Five beach chairs, a charcoal BBQ grill, and an outdoor shower round out the outdoor amenities. Two beach parking passes are included — drive your gear straight to the surf.
Wildlife & Scenery
The Weathervane sits in one of the most serene stretches of the Northern Outer Banks. Watch the famous Corolla wild horses from the screened porch, spot brown pelicans from the kitchen, or look for foxes, deer, and shorebirds along the preserve. An outdoor telescope is provided for stargazing. Shelling, fishing, and swimming are all steps from your front door.

We loved our time at the Weathervane. The house was very nice and stocked with everything we needed. The location was amazing and we really appreciated the quick walk to the beach. We saw so many wild horses during our stay and the people in the immediate area were extremely friendly. My only complaint were the annoying biting flies on our last beach day. Definitely bring bug spray or you’ll get eaten alive

It's a marvel to see them out there. We are sorry the biting flies found you on your last day—a shift in the wind can definitely bring them out, so packing bug spray is a fantastic tip for future guests! The Weathervane is located in the North Swan Beach part of Carova. I love that section of the beach since it is far enough up to have fewer people AND it is typically the widest part of the beach. So you feel very secluded! The Weathervane home is beautifully outfitted and so well cared for. Vacationing there means you get a winning combination, great beach AND a great house!!

Best Property Rental!!!

My husband and I stayed here for my 30th birthday and thoroughly enjoyed everything The Weathervane had to offer!!!! So much so, we added an extra night to our stay upon our arrival. The pool was amazing! The location was perfect! The house was clean and well maintained! We had many horse encounters on the property at all hours of the day. I still can’t believe this was available for us to book a last minute trip but we are so thankful and don’t think there could’ve been a better house for our 5 night getaway! We will definitely be back!!

Shoulder season at OBX. Less crowds and more relaxation. House was perfect. Everyone enjoyed and we look forward to our next trip. Property manager was great we left a shirt and they mailed it to us.

Great House! Great Vacation

Booking and check in process super simple and easy. House was clean and beautiful. No issues. We spent a lot of time on the beach, loved driving to the beach. Everything was so quiet and peaceful. Horses were in the backyard a few times which was super exciting. Would definitely stay again!

Magical place!

Our second stay in the Weathervane wonderful. The management was always quick to respond and go above and beyond for their guests. The house is well stocked and very comfortable. Our favorite spot was the screen porch where we played games and ate every meal while looking at the ocean and the horses in our yard. We absolutely love this house and the entire area. The horses and the beach make this a magical place. We will be back!

Wonderful 4x4 retreat

We had to cancel our early summer beach trip due to Covid. We were pleasantly surprised when the Weathervane popped up for an August vacation. This was our third visit to Carova and the Weathervane met all of our expectations. It was very close to the beach and the property was well maintained. The property manager was excellent and very quick with responses and requests. We highly recommend the Weathervane and look forward to future visits.

Great Location

This was our first time to stay on the 4x4 beach. The house is in a great location and was just perfect for what we needed. The house was clean and orderly. The A/C quit working on the second floor while we were there. We contacted the property manager and she scheduled the repair very quickly. Thank you for a great week!

Yes sea creatures ( a school of rays, dolphins, crabs, and ?? shark). Our location was superb (easy walk to beach, beautiful sunrise and sunset views from deck, and wild horses seen from deck). It was easy riding on the beach. The house was beautiful inside and out. Enjoyed the pool. Definitely will return.

Excellent home, very clean and well equipped

This was our second stay in 4x4. This home had more tour traffic. Also, more ATV/UTV and someone had an old dune buggy that was loud. House located further up the beach than our previous stay, but meant less “crowded” beach. For those of you not use to a well there is an odor to the water and not a lot of pressure. Overall home was very nice and well stocked for stay. Side screened in porch was great with fans and breeze. We did see a group of 3 horses most nights and our final night they grazed in the side and backyard.

Yes, the horses love this section of beach. They are quite a sightseeing phenomenon so that is what the tours are doing.. well they also talk about the history of the area as well as the reason the horses are here. It is quite informative. Sorry you had the beach water smell and low pressure. That is unusual for this home, so we'll have to check the water system. It is an anomaly for sure. Hope you will come again!
