Downtown Sunny Farmhouse with Bay Views, 3 Kings, Bellingham WA
Built in 1897, this sunny yellow farmhouse sits in the middle of downtown Bellingham behind a white picket fence. Three king bedrooms sleep six comfortably. The top-floor suite connects directly to a private rooftop deck with views over Bellingham Bay. It is one of the older homes still standing in this neighborhood, and it shows in the best ways: good bones, real rooms, natural light that moves through the house all day.
This is a place to base a real trip, not just a place to sleep. Everything that makes Bellingham worth visiting is walkable from the front door.
THE HOUSE
Three bedrooms, each with a king bed. The top-floor suite is the one guests remember most: it opens onto the rooftop deck, and the bay views from up there are genuinely good. Morning coffee, evening wind-down, or just somewhere to sit after a day on the trails. The deck is private and accessible only through that bedroom.
The main floor has an open kitchen with stainless appliances, oak cabinets, and a dining table that fits the whole group. The living room has a large sectional. There is a yard out front and a patio, both good for unwinding without going anywhere.
Everything you need is in the house: washer and dryer, high-speed wifi, fully equipped kitchen. One dedicated parking spot is included off the alley. Pets are welcome. There is a small step up to the front patio, worth knowing if anyone in your group has mobility considerations.
The house sits on a residential block in a busy part of downtown. There is some street noise, particularly on weekend evenings. It is a lively neighborhood, which is most of the point.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Bellingham's Saturday Farmers Market at Depot Market Square is a three-minute walk and genuinely one of the better ones in Washington: produce, hot food, live music, the kind of market you end up staying at longer than planned. It runs Saturdays from April through December. Bellingham has a serious food and brewery scene for a city its size. A few honest recommendations from someone who lives here:
Gruff Brewing is a neighborhood staple worth an evening. Kulshan Brewing operates out of the Trackside complex, which deserves its own explanation: Trackside is an outdoor beer garden, wine bar, and food hub built next to a large bike park where kids can ride while adults eat and drink in the sun. It is the kind of place that only exists in a certain type of Pacific Northwest city, and it is close enough to walk to.
For food: Otherside Bagels if you are starting your morning right, L&L for sandwiches and salads that are better than they need to be, and the Community Food Co-op for organic groceries and one of the better breakfast burritos in town if you want supplies for the trail or a slow morning in the kitchen.
Western Washington University is a six-minute walk. Mount Baker Theatre is twelve minutes on foot.
FOR THE OUTDOOR CROWD
Bellingham is one of the better basecamp cities in the Pacific Northwest for people who came to be outside.
Mountain biking: Galbraith Mountain is a short ride from the house and has one of the most developed trail networks in the region, with options from beginner flow trails to technical enduro riding. It draws riders from across the Pacific Northwest all summer. I co-host a guided mountain bike experience with a rider who competes on the UCI Downhill World Circuit. Guests get 20% off the guided experience. Message me before or after booking if you want details.
Hiking: The Chuckanut Mountains are accessible from town, with trails ranging from waterfront walks to ridgeline routes with Puget Sound views. Whatcom Falls Park is a few miles away and worth a morning.
Winter: Mount Baker Ski Area is about an hour's drive and one of the snowiest resorts in North America. It holds the world record for snowfall in a single season. Bellingham is the closest real city to it, which makes this house a reasonable base for a ski trip if you do not mind the drive.
Water: Bellingham Bay is right there in the views from the deck. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available downtown at the waterfront, a short drive or longer walk from the house.
GOOD TO KNOW
Check-in is via smart lock on the front door. Your code is sent automatically before arrival. From the parking spot off the alley, open the metal gate and walk along the side of the house to reach the front entrance on N Forest St.
The entire main house is yours for the stay: all three bedrooms, kitchen, living room, front yard, and patio. The separate unit off the alley is private and not accessible to guests.
Exterior security cameras are on the property.
City of Bellingham Short-Term Rental Permit: USE2025-0020.

Loved this pet friendly, comfortable and convenient spot steps from co-op and walking distance from many restaurants and music venues. And Mallard's ice cream! Short drives took us to fun parks, and our dog had one of her best vacations ever, including making new friends at the farmer's market a couple of blocks from the house!

Thank you so much for the lovely review, Erica! Really hope to have you back again, soon.
Loved staying here! So close to everything in downtown Bellingham and a great rooftop deck to soak in the sunset. The house was very clean, you wouldn’t think it was pet friendly. Owner was responsive and helpful throughout the stay. Highly recommend.

Great location, great upstairs balcony, off street parking. The house was fully stocked with dishes, cleaning supplies, towels. Host was responsive and gave us a list of local recommendations. We are looking forward to a return trip.

Clean, comfortable, spacious, well-appointed, amazing location, and great communication from the host. It is a lively neighborhood with some street noise, but no louder than I'd expect for downtown in a college town. Definitely didn't disrupt our sleep (only mentioning because another review called out street noise). We liked watching the neighbor's cat sunning on a windowsill We were only there for one night, but hope to return for more time in the future. Thank you!

10/10 and if we ever have the need, we wld love to stay, again. Torrey was a stellar host. The space is clean, modern, and is central to everything a guest might need: gym, grocery, entertainment. It’s all there. Thank you for having us.

Disliked: Listing accuracy
Ouse was just okay. Listed hairdryer as available but none there so had to go purchase one. Bathtub didn't drain when using and difficult to use. Parking explanation is inadequate..is parking out back? Fence in front is not unit parking but public.

I’m sorry to hear your stay fell short of expectations.
To clarify: the hairdryer was in fact there and available in the upstairs bathroom when I checked immediately after your departure. I still issued the $50 refund right away as a courtesy for the inconvenience you experienced.
The bathtub drains properly once the diverter lever is pushed all the way down into full “drain” mode. I’ve added a clear label and updated instructions to prevent any future confusion.
Parking for the unit is clearly described in the welcome message and check-in instructions as “off the alley” behind the house, with a dedicated sign marking the exact spot (separate from the public parking in front).
I also wish the shower questions had been sent through the VRBO app or text first, as your calls came through at 1 AM my time while I was on the East Coast.
Thank you for the feedback. I’ve made the above improvements based on it to help future guests have a smoother stay.

Host and owner of The Sunshine Cottage
The cottage is on a busier street than we expected, and parking instructions were unclear (host will be correcting this). Parking is in the alley behind the property. Bedrooms on the Forest St. side were too loud with traffic at night, but those on the alley side were much quieter. House is generally clean and pleasant, with a distant view out over the bay, but it is minimalist. Furniture is comfy and good quality, but there were no games/puzzles/toys/books when we stayed, and the kitchen lacked some basic items. That said, the hosts were VERY open to feedback and I'm certain they will addressing these issues. The place was spacious for entertaining, centrally located (close to the food co-op!), and we would definitely stay there again.

Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed review! We really appreciate your feedback and are glad to hear you enjoyed the cottage’s comfort, spacious layout, and convenient central location.
One of the benefits of being so close to downtown is easy access to shops and restaurants, though the tradeoff can be a bit more street noise than some guests expect. While no previous guests have mentioned this as a concern, we understand that sensitivity to noise can vary, and we’re happy the alley-side bedroom worked better for you.
Regarding parking, we do outline in our welcome message that parking is located behind the house off the alley, with a sign marked “Unit A Parking.” That said, we want to ensure it’s crystal clear for all guests, so we’re reviewing our instructions to make them even easier to follow.
We’ve also taken your suggestions to heart: additional kitchen items like a peeler have already been ordered, and we’ve added some games for future guests to enjoy. While games and toys weren’t listed in our amenities, we hope they’ll be a fun bonus for others.
Thank you again for staying with us and for sharing your experience. We’re so glad you’d return, and we look forward to hosting you again!
About the host
Hosted by Torrey van Benten Belzberg
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and have been hosting in Bellingham for several years. When I'm not managing properties I'm usually on a mountain bike at Galbraith, surfing, or grilling with friends. I co-host a guided mountain bike experience with a rider who competes on the UCI Downhill World Circuit, so if you're coming to ride, message me before you arrive and I can point you in the right direction or set you up with a guide.
I take hosting seriously. The house is clean, the instructions are clear, and if something is wrong during your stay I want to know about it so I can fix it. I'm not on-site but I'm never far.
Why they chose this property
This block of North Forest Street is about as central as Bellingham gets. The Saturday Farmers Market is a few minutes on foot. Gruff Brewing, Otherside Bagels, L&L, and the Co-op are all walkable. Trackside is close enough that you can walk over for a Kulshan and be back in twenty minutes. WWU is six minutes on foot and the waterfront is a short drive.
It is a real neighborhood with street life and some noise on weekend evenings, which I think is the point of staying downtown rather than somewhere quieter. If you came to Bellingham to actually be in Bellingham, this is the right block.
What makes this property unique
The house was built in 1897 and is one of the older homes still standing in this part of downtown. It is a proper farmhouse, not a renovated apartment or a converted unit. Three real bedrooms, each with a king bed, good natural light, and a rooftop deck off the top-floor suite with views over Bellingham Bay that guests mention in almost every review.
Most downtown properties in Bellingham are smaller or further from the core. This one sleeps six comfortably, has parking included, and puts you within walking distance of everything without feeling like you're in a hotel.
