Marl and the Surrounding Area
With a population of just under 90,000, Marl is the second-largest city in the Recklinghausen district and is located on the northern edge of the Ruhr region. Thanks to its location on the edge of the Münsterland, Marl is an ideal starting point for exploring the Ruhr region and/or the Münsterland. Hikers and cyclists will find extensive areas here that are not yet completely overrun with tourists. Marl itself has its own charm once you take the time to get to know the city. It has a long tradition of mining and chemical industry that has shaped the city. Charming working-class areas, reclaimed slag heaps, and extensive green spaces within the city limits give Marl its distinctive character. The city centre, developed in the 1970s, features a unique town hall and administrative complex, as well as a large shopping centre called “Marler Stern,” which houses a major outlet on the upper floor. The annual presentation of the Adolf Grimme Prize has also made Marl well-known throughout Germany. An internationally renowned sculpture collection has been made accessible to the public throughout the city.
The neighbouring cities of Haltern, Gelsenkirchen, Recklinghausen, Herten, and Dorsten also have charming city centre areas perfect for lingering and attractive destinations for day trips.
