Roa Cottage is a rustic cottage, close to the start of the Paparoa Great walk.
Roa was once a thriving community serving the mining people. Nowadays Roa has four families, two holiday houses, sheep, chickens, many native birds and a feeling of "remoteness" for some!
Roa is approximately 3 k's from Blackball where there is a general store, hotel, cafe, sausage and salami factory, crafts and other delights.
The cottage is on a no exit road which leads to a working open cast coal mine which is far up into the Paparoa mountains. There is weekday traffic to and fro the mine.
Road access to the Paparoa Great Walk is approx 2 k's. from the cottage
The cottage is an older, rustic, comfortable and cosy cottage with a small yard and a colourful flower garden. It is usually quiet and peaceful. (Unless the coal trucks are running). There is a stream down behind the house, down a steep bank, which offers a place to cool off and enjoy. The owner lives on site and can assist in anyway you might find helpful for your stay.
Greymouth is the closest town ,approx 24 k's and a good place to shop for supplies. Reefton, Hokitika, Punakaiki and other interesting places are all within easy driving distance.

Cottage is a delightful hideaway in the West Coast bush. Host is very welcoming and had the fire lit for us so the place was lovely and warm. Good selection of tea, coffee and other bits and useful pieces.
It was a beautiful historic miners cottage full of books. Great garden too.

The kitchen had everything. The beds were comfy and clean. ! The views were spectacular!! And the welcoming committee named Losty was such a blessing.!! Lovely old cottage for peace and quiet ..
The house needs to be cleaned; all the rooms are full of spider webs and dusty. The supply of food was mainly expired. Location was great, close to nature. Beautiful garden.
If you would like to stay in the country and in a quiet place this is the place. The host, Lyndsey, is nice and welcoming.

Great little property with a fantastic host. The fire had been lit before we arrived on the first night. The house has everything you need while away from home.
Roa cottage is perfectly placed to explore the Paparoa great walk Trail. The cottage is warm and comfortable and the beds are super comfortable too allowing for a good sleep after the days exertions. The weather for our visit was surprisingly good compared to the East Coast where we had come from so we were able to make the most of our weekend away. Lindsey made the check-in process easy and was always handy if we had any questions.
3 days and 3 nights over Labour Weekend, very cosy place to stay with log-burner and well setup with clean linen and towels. Lots of books and things to read, enjoyable setting for short walks, and only a 5 minute drive to Blackball.

We had a lovely stay with Lyndsey. She was very welcoming, had the fire roaring on our arrival and there was everything we needed in the house, including toys for the kids.
I have lived here, in Roa for 14 years and previously in Blackball for 10 years. I am a retired social worker who loves to garden and enjoy the birds and bush around the cottage.
