About this property

We have 64 FIVE Stars! Excellent property; Sunny Puako, Hawaii, Ocean View & AC

Aloha! Here is your rare opportunity to experience a well-appointed, clean, & fresh condominium in the quaint little Hawaiian village of Puako! The master bedroom has a California King bed, a private lanai, and an ocean view. This unit also has a swimming pool in the complex.

We have owned our condo since 2005 before Homeaway, VRBO and Expedia merged. Our 64+ Five star ratings from our guests are a culmination of years worth of feedback (although only some are showing on this website). We are an APPROVED STVR #19-359590 following all of the Hawaii State Law Lodging requirements and our Hawaii Tax Lodging ID #T-006-562-6112; GET# GE-006-562-6112-01R. STVR stands for Short Term Vacation Rental. We also follow cleanliness guidelines for COVID19 prevention.

This condo is a place to relax and enjoy the sunny splendor of Hawaii, with Puako being a gem of the Big Island. Sounds of the surf or returning whales in the bay can lullaby you to sleep at night. Stars are visible from the master bedroom at night! This master bedroom has its own A/C, and the living room has its own larger A/C unit with high output which cools the condo.

The second bedroom is set with a Queen size bed of equal comfort as the master and is nestled against the backside of the condo with its own private entry door. Full closets and tropical decor create a theme of relaxation.

There are plenty of extra amenities that create the real ambiance of Aloha in the Puako #303 condominium. This owner has traveled extensively and has brought into this lodging the "small things" that make our time away from home either an 'okay' experience or an excellent one!

Unexpected travel items such as soaps, shampoos, sunblock, bandaids, coffee, teas, island cookbooks, or 'Big Island Revealed', books are often available for your enjoyment. High-speed internet access, flat screen Cable TV, and outdoor dining on the lanai for breathtaking sunsets are all options that set this accommodation apart from others.

The Paniolo Room doubles as an office when the queen-size sofa bed is not in use. Give yourself a few private moments at the roomy desk to write a 'I wish you were here' postcard. If you decide to work from the condo, we also have wireless internet.

Hospitality abounds in this home as it has clean and beautiful appliances, kitchenware, and linens including six fluffy beach towels and also a selection of books. This condo has a view of the surf and coastline due to its upper location on the third floor.

Access to food and services are close by and without the Kona traffic jams! Five Star world-class resorts & hotels have chosen this region because it affords proximity to some of the finest beaches in the world (Hapuna & Wailea).

Activities on the island can also include a wealth of things; golfing, horse back riding, diving, surfing, birding, visiting botanical gardens, fishing, snorkeling, boutique shopping, spas, sailing, hiking in lush tropical forests, helicopter rides, fine dining, spiritual retreats, or beachcombing. You may also choose to explore the petroglyphs at the Archeological Reserve, discover the volcano by helicopter, visit for the Ironman Triathalon in October, humpback whale watching (Dec.-May), view the stars at the Mauna Kea observatory or slip off on a sunset sail...

A simple morning or evening stroll across the street from this Puako Condo #303 can afford you breathtaking sights of sea turtles in their natural habitat and an opportunity to snorkle or dive in protected waters and coral reefs. There is a swimming pool in the garden area of the complex for those who prefer exercising, sunning, or relaxing poolside. Pick a few seasonal fruits from the garden area and make a fresh juice smoothie to sip on while you relax!

If you are in need of a vacation getaway, privacy, refuge or renewal, eventing, or romance, this could be your place! Look no further for an exceptional lodging opportunity. The Big Island of Hawaii is listed as one of the '1000 Places To See Before You Die in the New York Times #1 Best Seller's Book List. Sorry, no smoking nor pets allowed.

Price point for the condo is a major plus given the cost of hotels nearby. However, keep in mind that you get what you pay for. Unfortunately, the landlord elected to ding me in ratings for bringing the cleaniness and multiple plumbing issues to her attention.

Everything you could want!
Apartment was clean, bright and comfortable. Bed and linens so comfortable. In a long history of rentals this was the best equipped apartment we've stayed in, everything you could possibly need plus a great store next door. Finally Steve and Sonja were great to work with, accomadated a late check out for us. Couldn't ask for a better experience, many thanks Steve and Sonja

Perfect Location
My husband and I just returned from a very enjoyable vacation at Steve and Sonja's condominium. Although the condo is older, it is very clean and well maintained. The master bed is quite comfortable. They have provided both beach chairs and beach towels for their guests. The washer and dryer in the unit worked well. There is a hair dryer. We did use the air conditioners some and they kept the condo very cool. The beach access is across the road. The walk is short and the beach is nice. We enjoyed the electric Webber grill on the lani. The view does overlook the parking lot but there is nice water view as well. This area is very quiet which is what we were looking for. The resort areas have many places to dine. Sarah, the property manager, was very helpful. The only negative is there is no dishwasher as stated in the description. We really enjoyed staying here. Please note the homes across the street rent upwards of $2500/night. This condo is in a great area and has a really unique and enjoyable atmosphere.

Second stay at Puako condo
We stayed at Sonja and Steve's condo last year and returned again for two weeks this March. Last year we found everything about this condo was exactly as advertised by Sonja and Steve. This year? Just the same, except only better because of the new appliances. (Tip for visitors - If you stop on the way from the airport to buy groceries, don't purchase condiments, spices or other similar staples without first checking the condo because we found the fridge and cupboards well stocked with these things.) Across the road is a wonderful sandy beach where we saw turtles while snorkeling. We took a whale watching trip from the Puako Bay boat launch (a five minute walk down the road). This condo is also conveniently located on the island; a short drive from the airport and to other great beaches, grocery stores, farmer's markets and access to the Saddle Road for Mauna Kea or to cross over to the other coast for Volcano National Park. Finally, Sonja and Steve are wonderful to deal with. We will be returning here next year. (Actually, for purely selfish reason, I should have given this condo a lousy review in order to increase our chances of finding an opening next year. ☺)

we were impressed with this condo. It was clean and everything that you would need was available.
We love Puako and this is a perfect place to stay. Beaches are close and all the equipment you need is available at this unit. Beds are comfortable and AC available if needed. We just used the ceiling fans. The condo has a nice homey feel to it and I would recommend it to friends. Sonja and Steve are very helpful and answer questions quickly.

Wonderful Stay in Puako
We had a great holiday and enjoyed our stay at this very clean and well-appointed condominium. We loved the location, and our teen boys trudged off to the wonderland across the street every morning with their nets and buckets to explore the tidepools. Between that, the snorkeling, the fishing, and the exploring, it was very "Boy's Life" in a way that is all too uncommon in our family's day-to-day urban lifestyle. As others have noted, it's great being so close to world-class Hapuna Beach for sun and boogie boarding, as well as the beach at mile marker 69 (our favorite thanks to the shade and snorkeling). One thing that may not be mentioned enough in other reviews is the priceless breeze that blows through every evening and morning (at least in December). It's such a pleasant and peaceful breeze to fall asleep and wake up to. Everyone slept really well during our stay. As others have mentioned, Sara is really very sweet about nice little touches around the property like leaving fresh flowers in the elevator. We so overpacked because of the washer/dryer and how well stocked the condo was. Had many opportunities to support the local economy at the general store, farmers markets, etc. We took advantage of the kitchen, but also enjoyed a splurge at Merriman's and The Copper Bar at Mauna Kea. Bamboo up in Hawi was worth the drive. We hope to return in the future.

Very clean and lots of extras
We really liked the condo location; and as many others have said, it was very well appointed and had everything we needed. We used their coolers, beach chairs, life jackets, beach towels, and boogie boards daily. It also had plenty of bath towels which was nice for a family of 5. Thanks for everything Sonja!!

Memorable Time in Hawaii!
Condo had everything we needed to stay in Puako. Very convenient location as it is close to all the best beaches on the big Island. Recommend black sand beach for snorkeling; Hapuna and Mauna Kea for relaxing /playing in waves. Everyone at the condo, and the island are really nice. Neighbors helped out with my son when he was stung by a bee. Wife couldn't get enough of mango left out kindly by Sarah the building manager. I would definitely stay again and highly recommend. The condo was really hot when we first got in, but once we turned on the ac it was better. Aloha!

Piece of Paradise
I truly enjoyed my stay in Puako in Condo #303. The owners, Steve and Sonja, were wonderful and easy to communicate with when I had questions. I never needed her, it was nice to know there was onsite help/support just down the hall in #301 w/ manager Sara (I did see her around and appreciated the lovely flowers she put out every day). The condo itself was perfect for me: cute, clean, comfy, well-stocked (kitchen, bath, laundry, beach, etc), and w/ a beautiful view from the balcony. Although mostly quiet, there were times when I could hear neighbors - Nothing that destroyed my relaxation and enjoyment, and most seemed to follow the guidelines of doors/windows closed when watching TV, listening to music, etc. What I loved the most was the location. Although big, new hotels can be nice, I grew up in a small beach town so I relished in being a bit “off the grid” and away from the larger developments. I loved all the beach access areas just across the street and/or down the road and I really enjoyed having the cute, friendly local store just next door. To me, this location and this condo were heaven and I’m sure I’ll be back soon.

Everything we hoped for
We had a last minute change of plans during our stay in Hawaii and so were so pleased to find Sonja’s condo at the last minute. She was very helpful and the condo was lovely. Everything you hope for a longer term stay: Very clean, a Well stocked kitchen, lovely balcony with a view, fans and comfy chairs. The condo is within minutes of two great beaches. The building itself is well maintained and quiet. We will definitely be back.

I Recomend This Property Absolutely
This condo is perfectly located to explore all the Big Island has to offer. The condo unit itself is equipped with everything you will need. The general store next door is fantastic. The on site property manager is a super host. I look forward to staying here again. The third floor ocean view and breeze was amazing. If only I could take it home with me. The mattress on the hide a bed in the 3rd bedroom/den could use replacement but we found a mattress cover in the closet to improve it. Literally the only challenge we experienced. The owners were very easy to deal with and accommodating.

Love Puako!
We enjoyed our stay in condo 303. It had everything we need. Beach gear, kitchen extras like spices and books both for pleasure and about the island. We have been to the big Island several times but this has been our favorite. We love that Puako is away from the crowds but close to multiple great beaches.

A wonderful get-away and home away from home - everything you need!
We enjoyed our time at this spacious, comfortable, and relaxing condo with our toddler, and hope to stay there again! A great view, more than a complete kitchen, a very short walk to (and everything you need for) fun at the beach, and super clean. Appreciated the touches of home, the deck seating, washer and dryer, and air conditioning, as I got sick the day we arrived and had to stay there a lot while my husband and daughter went on jaunts to the beach, pool, and store next door, etc. Impressed and thankful for the many kitchen amenities, toaster, rice cooker, microwave, dishes, pots and pans, seasonings, etc., (far more than any other VRBO we've stayed at), since we eat in almost entirely, due to food allergies. The on-site property manager and her assistant were friendly and helpful as well. It was extra windy during our stay but everyone said it was unusually so.

Perfect for Family
The condo provided the perfect location and accomodations for our family's Spring Break vacation. The three bedrooms and two baths provided plenty of room for our teenagers, in a quiet location. From the third floor balcony, we enjoyed great views of the ocean, whale watching, and beautiful sunsets. There is a beautiful beach across the street, and you are only 5-15 minutes away from additional pristine beaches, hiking locations, and shopping centers. The General Store next door stocks your basic grocery items, as well as many fresh specialty items and friendly sales associates. We appreciated all of the comforts of home and recreational gear, with the well stocked inventory of boogey boards, beach chairs & towels, snorkel gear, cooler, kitchen appliances and dishes, linens, travel guides, and more. We enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of the ocean waves and waking up to the sounds of tropical birds. The pool is warm and clean and the grounds are well maintained and inviting, with a variety of tropical plants and flowers. The reserved parking space was a bonus, and the owners were a pleasure to work with. We would definitely recommend this condo, when visiting the Big Island.

Great Condo for a perfec stay!
Condo was awesome, well kept. Owners have great communication and really want you to have a great experience. Close to great snorkeling, not far from shopping and other beaches. Beds were comfortable and plenty of room. Having boogey boards and beach chairs to use were great. I will definately stay hear again if I visit the big island.

Easy Family Spring Break Week
Our party of five (parents, two college kids, and one of their friends) stayed at this Puako condo for a fun spring break trip that didn't break the bank. The condo decor is island style without being kitschy and was very clean and comfortable. We did not use the AC and were comfortable with the sea breezes and the fans moving air through. For a group with different abilities and interests, the location is perfect. My husband and I liked to get up early while it was still cool and go for a walk or an early snorkel (the snorkelling at the end of Puako Beach Drive was amazing -- we saw turtles, a manta ray, and a multitude of varieties of coral and tropical fish). We would come back to the condo for breakfast and pack up a picnic lunch and head out to a sandy beach where the younger set could boogie board, etc. (Puako Bay is mostly lined with lava tide pools.) Hapuna, Beach 69 and Mauna Kea Beach all within 5-15 minutes drive. Beach towels, four folding beach chairs, a small cooler, four boogie boards, two beach hats were all provided by the condo, stored in the study. Sometimes we picked up sandwiches from the general store next door, which also had a used book exchange and good rental DVDs. One morning we walked along the beach trail that starts at the end of Puako Beach Drive and in fifteen minutes were eating breakfast at the outdoor restaurant at the Fairmount Orchid resort. The trail to the Petroglyphs is close by the same resort. One nonbeach day we drove to Waimea for lunch at Pau restaurant and then north along the Kohalo ridgeline and on to the end of the north shore road to hike down into the beautiful Eden-like Pohulu Valley. Shaved ice in Hawi on the way home along the coast. One evening we drove 10 minutes south to wander around the ancient Hawaiian fishponds on the Mauna Lani resort grounds and had a big splurge dinner at the Napua restaurant overlooking the beach there. A week sped by. We liked the condo option over staying at a fancy resort; it was more affordable, we could do our own cooking when we wanted to, and it felt more "real" to be in a small beach community. The large front bedroom with access to the lanai and ocean view is the best. The condo is delightful and we highly recommend it. We rented snorkel gear for the week from Snorkel Bob's at the Mauna Lani shopping area and did our main food shopping at the Foodland there; take the turn off Hwy 19 toward the Mauna Lani resort (the last turn before the Puako exit).

Great Location. Neat & Clean Condo
Our stay on the Big Island was our favorite part of our Hawaii vacation. Puako is off the beaten path which is what we were looking for. The snorkeling at the end of the road was the best we experienced anywhere. The beach access just across the road from the condo had turtles in abundance. We did travel around the Big Island and the location is a reasonable drive to popular attractions. The front bedrooms could use a little more A/C airflow, but the fan provided helped with that.

Our Hawaiian vacation
Since we are planning to eventually move to the Big Island after retirement, we've been there several times and have stayed at various condos. Overall, I would say this was the best. We had not stayed in Puako before and really enjoyed this quiet village. It's quite scenic and relaxing. The little general store next door pretty much has everything you would need. As for the condo, it's very well-stocked and very comfortable. The master bedroom and living room has an air conditioner although you really don't need it. The balcony has a great view of the ocean. It's on the third floor and there's an elevator. The only drawback is no dishwasher but even this was not a big problem. We have teenagers we were able to put to work! Overall, I would give this condo a hearty two thumbs up!

Mele Kalikimaka destination getaway
Owners were very helpful throughout the process. When I expressed interest and had questions prior to booking. Owners called me to answer questions about the area. They were very easy to work with. Upon arrival, the condo was better than pictures and a very pleasant surprise. There was enough room for our family of five (with three teenagers) to be able to have some space, so much better than a hotel. The condo was clean and neat upon arrival. We felt like the listing was accurate in describing the amenities. Opening the windows at night we could here the soothing ocean waves. Terrific location!! Puako is a quiet oceanfront community that is close enough to amenities to not feel isolated, but separated enough to be quiet and relaxing. In the mornings, several options were available for the family to do different activities without getting in the car including strolling or running on Puako Road, snorkeling, sun bathing on the beach, cycling, swimming in the pool, or quietly reading on the balcony. From there, our adventures were not far away. Our favorite beach on the Big Island, Hapuna, is 5 minutes away. We would go in the morning when they opened, stay for a few hours before the crowds came, go and do other activities throughout the day, and then come back at about 4 when the crowds were leaving. The surf was high while we were there and the. Boogie Boarding was excellent. Other amenities including groceries, shopping, farmers market and restaurants are only about 10 minutes away. In a pinch, the Puako General Store is right next door. Truly a great stay!
